black mulch allows the beauty of the flowers to bounce off the black background..and adds nutrients to the soil.Charlene

What about compost folks? Better for the soil, better for your plants. Red and black mulch are both dyed. And if you mulch, don’t pile it too close to your shrubs and trees.

Right. Why paint your garden black or red? They both look fake and hideous.

we mulch our fall leaves and end up with a nondescript blah mulch. Seems to work functionally but perhaps not so much aesthetically.

Utter snobbery, to each their own. I personally love the clean pop of color red mulch brings to my tiny yard. Nothing interesting about black mulch, blah!
