Hand’s down my last sub would be the Saint Joseph (Virgillio’s) with xtra provelone. I salivate just thinking about it. Have to have a grapefruit soda too.

Nor’Easter with Prosciutto – Prosciutto, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes, olive salad, balsamic vinegar, oil & oregano. Wow.

No favorite for me (Destino Alex Special loaded with hots and pickles is up there) but what a great idea. Please make this an archive we can all see and try the best of the best. Better yet how about GMG sells a ten pack coupon book that covers the 10 best sandwiches as determined by your fans for 1 price? I will buy 2 booklets.

I agree with Paulie Walnuts, I like the bread at Scalafani’s…during the long days of spring and summer I am often up at first light, by 9:30 it is time for lunch and going to Scalafani’s to get Prosciutto, provolone, oil, seasoning and a little of their pickle mix on warm, fresh bread is the best…large enough for 2 and only $5.00 …the BEST!

Destino’s Eggplant Parm or Tuna with Pickles, depends on the weather. Find a Twinlights Birch Beer or Pale Ginger Ale to wash it down, and you’re set.

OK…I have to preface my answer with a story. When I had 4 teeth pulled to make way for other teeth and braces when I was 12 or so, my mother held out a carrot by saying I could have whatever I wanted for dinner after. My choice was to have an Italian with extra pickles and hots, oil and spices from Destinos. Of course, I couldn’t actually eat a thing for days but she made good on the promise eventually. Back then we never went out to eat- not even lunch. There were 6 of us kids making 8 (or 9 or 10 with a couple kids added from the neighborhood) mouths to feed every meal. Destino’s was a major treat. Later, when I would come home from college on break (school in Wisconsin…subs are ‘hero’s’ and piled high with lettuce…and they cut their pizzas in squares but I digress) my first desire was to get my Italian sub at Destino’s. I’m Danish and from Rock port and until I grew up and worked in Gloucester I didn’t know there was any other place to get a sub. Even now having tasted many fine Gloucester stubs from all the establishments, my vote goes to Destino’s hands down. Nostalgic…yes. Worthy…definitely!
