Great photo as usual Fred! My great grandfather fought in WW1 too but as a Hungarian Calvary officer he was also wounded – got buried in a heap of debris from an explosion and a soldier who spied his expensive boots sticking out of the mound found when he went to get them that they were still attached to my very much alive grandfather and he dug him out – his lungs had collapsed but his nice boots saved him.

My grandfather, USMC, was wounded while fighting in the trenches in WWI. He did not talk about it much, but one day he showed me where the shrapnel was still embedded in his leg. He kept a German “Luger” 9mm pistol under his mattress, and I saw it once. This was probably the last war where cavalry was used, a brutal war. When I went to college, my grandfather, Yewell D. Scales, insisted on giving me a pair of boots. I still have them and wear them in bad weather. So I’ll think of our grand and great grandfathers next time I lace up the boots.
