The Best Song You Could Ever Download for Free- The Earl Foote Band’s Gloucester Til The End

Earl Let me use the music for the intro on the podcast and it’s always been the official song of GMG but since GMG Contributor Mike Lindberg put the incredible music video to it ages ago on the blog and so many new people have come aboard, many probably don’t know about it.

So a long overdue re thanking of Earl and Arch for letting me use the musing for the GloucesterCast.  It’s an incredible song that brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it.

Joanie On The Pony from Bob Lindberg

Joey: it’s Mike Lindberg’s brother BOB (the dentist)writing. Recently we had family from Tampa in town and showing them around Gloucester and I wanted to show them the
very nice Joan D’Arc statue . When asked “why does Gloucester have this statue ?” I thought, you know I do not know but I will find out ; I did know the artist was from the area. Much to my surprise I learned many very interesting facts besides that the sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington came from causeway studio at “hole in the wall” at Goose Cove where we passed a million times as kids heading out to the Annisquam and the Bay.

I do know some refer to her as Joanie on the Pony affectionately and somewhat naively irreverently ( goodmorninggloucester) and always wondered why French statue and not Swedish,Portugese or Italian.

Among the surprising facts I have found thanks to internet:
1) horse was modelled from the biggest Gloucester firehorse at the time in pre WWI days
2) her studio was the house at the hole in the wall as we called it;family owned the house aka first marine biology field station there ;she designed plaque on the rock
3) figure model of Joan was her niece
4) in the art contest many liked her worked but she didn’t win because it was thought a man must have helped her -it was so good
5) Joan is holding up sword before battle asking for God to help her in leading the men in the quest to rid France of the English;later burned at the stake at 19,later sainted
and wore men’s clothing because as she said “no voice told her to not wear men’s clothing”
6) There are several copies of statue one other in NY and 3 in France -Gloucester’s is #2
7) It was given to Gloucester after WWI as a special thank you to all US forces who helped France kick Germany out of  France
particularly men from Gloucester in the Battle of Belleau Woods 1918 where the marines fought so bravely they earned the nickname said to have been given to them by
the Germans ” teufelshunden-hound devils or hellhounds ” for their tenacity and where a famous marine corps officer ‘s response to request from the French fighting alongside to retreat under the heavy fire from the Germans was  “Retreat? We just got here!”
8) at that Battle which was greatest battle since Appomattox where US soldiers fought includes men from Gloucester- local Gloucester man Lester Waas seehttp://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/index.php?/topic/30873-show-tell-wwi-5th-marine-co-cdrs-kia-group-dsc-navy-cross/who was last surviving officer none the less led a fatal charge of marines to capture a German machine gun and won several medals for bravery see following and the first Medal of Honor for WWI was given to a marine for bravery  surprisingly for helping wounded while under fire a dentist Alexander Gordon Lyle from Gloucester won the medal of honor for bravery http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexander_Gordon_Lyle  also veteran A Piatt Andrew who name is on 128 bridge .

So after learning this I will look at Joanie on the Pony with well earned affection and appreciation and gratitude . Regards Bob Lindberg

GMG Power Rankings #2

Well number 2 in the GMG Power Rankings is a no brainer.  Mike Lindberg came aboard shortly after the home explosion on Eastern Ave early this year.

Mike emailed me some photos of the house explosion and had really captured the devastating scene.  While Mike does not post every single day, whatever he does post is always a home run.  Mike’s never satisfied with doing anything half assed.

The GMG Schhoner Festival Photo contest was hugely popular, the Gloucester Til The End Video he made with Earl and Arch’s song still gets a lot of traffic, his HDR photography is always something over-the top, his production of the GMG podcasts and intro are top notch.

While we can’t count on Mike’s 3PM post every day, we know when he does have time to put something together for the site, it’s going to leave an impression.

Mike comes in at #2 in the current GMG Power Rankings.

Captain Carlo’s this Week!

Thursday: Greenhead

Come and see Greenhead in their Captain Carlo’s debut. “Greenhead” is two guys (Mike and Chuck) who play acoustic guitar, sing harmonies and do a range of music from upbeat rock and roll to mellow brunch and dinner music. Greenhead’s song-list includes Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Cash, John Mayer, The Beatles, Weezer, Ryan Adams, Snow Patrol, James Taylor, Plain White Ts, Jack Johnson, Elvis Costello, Lyle Lovett, and more.

Friday: JOSHUA TREE

As The Nation’s premier tribute to U2, The Joshua Tree pride themselves with their ability to generate a unique musical experience that does not lend itself to impersonations.

Without compromising artistic integrity, the band has gone to great lengths to reproduce the distinct sound of one of the world’s most popular rock bands. Unique to The Joshua Tree is their dedication to the entire U2 songbook, including early fan favorites from the 1980-1987 period (Boy, October, War, The Unforgettable Fire, and The Joshua Tree).

Playing each song with the same intensity and emotion, the band covers all phases of U2’s career from their first album Boy to the most recent, No Line on the Horizon.

Now Joshua Tree comes to Captain Carlo’s this Friday July 24th out on the deck and under the stars. Tell all your friends about this one it’s going to be a great night of music.

Saturday: The Herland Brothers Band

Boston based THE HERLAND BROTHERS BAND is a top-notch cover/original band, meticulously performing the greatest Rock/Dance hits of yesteryear and today. Since 1994 HB’s high energy cover performances continue to wow and electrify audiences from Maine to New York, with their unique ability to cover all genres vocally and musically, matching the original artist renditions. The band’s original music continues to also excite, leading the Boston Globe to write “A band on the rise with a bright future”. The HB band has performed as either the headliner and/or as an opener for national acts all over the Northeast, including shows at the legendary CBGB’s in New York City.

Last night’s CD Release Party with Chelsea!

Chelsea9:00pm – Dog Bar was packed. Chelsea Berry was setting up for a night of music promoting her new CD.  With a keen sense of humor and bluntness, the singer-songwriter kept the audience entertained for hours. She sang her own songs as well as covers that were meaningful to her. More than once, the only sound in the room was Chelsea’s  incredible music. Her cover of Susan Werner’s “May I Suggest” brought tears to many listeners’ eyes. She invited Pete Lindberg, Bradley Royds and a cast of others to round out the night. What a show!

Go listen for yourself at the Rhumb Line around 7:30 Sunday night where she’ll be playing with friend and cohort Pete Lindberg. You’ll be glad you did.

You can read more about Chelsea in Mike Lindberg’s (Pete’s dad) post here on GMG.

Exit 11 Rocked Capt. Carlo’s! GMG’s own Mike Lindberg!

Cap2973_1050963476453_1296722091_30118015_7587652_nt. Carlo’s was packed last night. The band, Exit 11, rocked the house. The guys hadn’t played together for a couple of years, but you’d never know it. Frank Gentile, Jim Frontiero, Mike Lindberg, Pete Malaquias each on instruments and doing vocals had the place dancing and singing along.Their accapellas were incredible. Familiar songs done uniquely their way.

To Mike and all the guys- Thanks for sharing the music and fun! Looking forward to the JJ benefit on Thursday June 25.

GGAP III Thank You

To those of you who saw yesterday’s presentations, a big thank you!

Rob Newton’s slideshow of his grandfather’s old postcards was beautifully set to music. My interview with Karen McCormack was highlighted by her dad’s arrival from Arizona just in time to see himself on the big screen. Mike Lindberg’s video of “Gloucester til the End” brought tears to everyone’s eyes. He commented that there would be a remake of the song and video when the band performs for the JJ Nicastro benefit at Capt. Carlo’s on June 25. Jay Albert included some interesting computer-generated music with his slideshow of gorgeous Gloucester photos including a shot of a tornado at last year’s Fiesta. And the show was wrapped up by the Bait and Tackle crew Tom Papows, Michael Pallazola, & Emile Doucette who will be traveling to Toronto for a film competition in May where they have been selected as one of 14 finalists for their Greasy Pole video.

Although it was a beautiful day, we are grateful for those who came to support the emerging talent of Gloucester Guerilla Art Project artists. Missed you, Joey!
