Greasy Pole, The Musical – Now, the Slide Show!

I caught one of the last showings of Greasy Pole, The Musical this year. This year’s cast (mostly new) did a great job keeping up the tradition of past years! Here is a slideshow of photos I took (warning: spoilers implied!)

If you missed this one, catch it next year! But the same troupe – Henry Allen’s North Shore Folklore Theatre – has a lineup of shows and other activities that you can see – and participate in – throughout the year! Besides the website at the previous link, you can also find them on Facebook.

It’s Fiesta Week At Cape Ann Community Cinema & The Annie

During St. Peter’s Fiesta on Wednesday, June 22nd through Sunday, June 26th, two of Gloucester’s West End venues in the heart of all of Fiesta’s happenings offer up a host of different events to entertain, enrich and enlighten Fiesta-goers.
The Cape Ann Community Cinema (CACC) at 21 Main Street has two films.

Sam Hartson’s new documentary entitled “This Is Fiesta” makes its debut, with shows Wednesday through Sunday at 5:00pm. Hartson is best-known for his “Celebrate Gloucester” concert film.

Also, Gloucester native Sal Zerilli’s documentary about The Fort Neighborhood called “No Pretty Prayer” returns, with shows Wednesday through Friday at 7:00pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 2:30pm and 7:00pm. The film sold out every show at its CACC premiere this winter.

Saturday at 9:00pm, The Earl Foote Band hits the stage for a rare appearance. Foote is half of the Cape Ann favorites Earl & Arch, creators of the essence of Gloucester song “Gloucester ‘Til The End.”

All Fiesta shows at CACC are considered special events, and are priced at $10.00 (no passes accepted). Tickets are available at the Cinema or online at www.CapeAnnCinema.com.

Across the street at The Annie at 1 Washington Street in Gloucester, the Henry Allen TheatreWorks Cape Ann production of “Greasy Pole: The Musical!” concludes its run. The show is a funny, bright and poignant 45-minute musical history of the Fiesta sporting event known as The Greasy Pole, in which competitors, known as “walkers,” attempt to traverse a greased-up 45-foot telephone suspended off the end of a platform in Gloucester Harbor off of Pavilion Beach. Henry Allen of The Annie and Keith Palazzola wrote the book, and Rob Newton of the CACC and Kitt Cox wrote the music and lyrics. The show runs Thursday at 6:30pm & 7:30pm, Friday at 6:00pm & 7:00pm, Saturday at 2:00pm, 3:00pm, 6:00pm & 7:00pm and Sunday at 7:00pm, 8:00pm, 9:00pm & 10:00pm. Paul Korn Says “When are you going to see ‘Greasy Pole, the Musical!’? It is great. Everyone should see it.”

VIVA, Greasy Pole, the Musical!
I said to Joey this morning, “When are you going to see ‘Greasy Pole, the Musical!’? It is great. Everyone should see it.”  Being Joey, he asked me to write my reactions, so here they are.
Enjoy one hour of heart and history, laughter, song, soul, food and faith.  Everyone, local Gloucesterites, newcomers, visitors and tourists, should go see this wonderful production that is the premiere performance at The Annie.  High praise and joyful appreciation go to the cast, crew, musicians, backers and audience last night that made the play a perfect opening event for the summer.
Even those of us who have enjoyed St. Peter’s Fiesta for many years in the past were treated to a deeper understanding of the role that “walkin’ the pole” has played in the history of our city.  And the singing, including spontaneous participation by the audience, was exuberant and full, celebrating life, death, joy and sadness.  Out-of-town friends who joined us in the fun last night now want to return to Gloucester to enjoy the real Festival and Walk.
Our special thanks go to Henry Allen, Keith Palazzola, Robert Newton and the fantastic band.
And Joey, try to make time to see this show.  Bring the family!
