Electricity Series Update: Brian O’Connor Paid $9.73 This Month For Electricity And Cranked His AC All Month Long In First Full Month Of Solar

You may remember as part of my Electricity saving series we were there at the initial meeting between Brian and his solar adviser Kevin Pritchett read about it here

Well now after his install it’s up and running and the results are very rewarding!

Here’s the progression-

Electricity Update 18 Brian and Diane O’Connor Are Going Solar

Solar Success!!! Brian and Diane O’Connor Had Their Solar Install On East Main Street #GloucesterMA Done On Earth Day and It’s Looking Sweet!

Back In January we were there when Brian’s Solar Advisor Kevin Prickett came by to look at Brian’s house and make recommendations. Here is what he had to say back in January-

Hi Joey, Just a quick follow on Brian and Diane O’Connor’s Solar evaluation. Brian and Diane’s home has qualified and they have decided to put rooftop solar on their home in Gloucester. (Only 15% of homes in MA are eligible.) Because of their home’s orientation to the sun and other factors, their entire cost will be covered by various federal, state and utility incentives. In fact they will actually be making money over and above their cost. And getting 90% of their electricity for free. If anyone else would like to find out if their home qualifies, I just need their contact information and our techs will initially rate the home via satellite. If it qualifies, we can up with a time for us to talk about how it all works. (About 90 mins.) I am in the process of working with several other Gloucester residents and will keep you posted on their progress. Many thanks for your continued support, Kevin Prickett Solar Advisor

As you can see it’s all come to fruition!

If you would like a completely free Solar evaluation to see if your house qualifies for the crazy amount of incentives and as Kevin states potentially 90% of your electricity for free, Fill Out The Form and They Will Contact You To Set It Up-

From just a few months ago in the snow for the evaluation when we took the video, to an Earth Day install, Brian’s gotta be psyched! Looking at the installation it looks like a super clean job.

Electricity Savings Update 16: Solar Opportunities and A Solar Home Evaluation At Brian O’Connor’s

Home Solar Evaluation At Brian O’Connor’s East Gloucester House
As part of our ongoing series since National Grid went up 37% on Elecricity prices we interviewed Kevin Prickett who came out to East Gloucester to do a Home Solar Evaluation. According to the Kevin, not only do you save money, but if your home qualifies, you actually will get back more than you put in. Watch the video to listen to how it works and if you are interested sign up for a Free Evaluation for yourself. The way he explained it is that Deval Patrick signed something into action that calls for National Grid to have a certain percentage of homes using renewable energy by a certain date. If they don’t reach that quota, they will be fined three times the cost to the Government. Currently from what he says there are less than 2% of households taking advantage of the program so there is this huge pool of money available for the smart people who make the call and take advantage. Our goal is to educate our readership and to get as many of us to be inside of that 2% of the smart people who are getting something back for the money they are putting in.

Update: just got a text from Brian O’Connor who just told me that if his house qualifies, not only would he have no electric bill but he would get a check in the mail.

The Great Gloucester Steak Bomb Challenge

Directed by Joey Ciaramitaro, with thanks to judges Ed Collard, Chris DeWolfe, Craig Kimberley, and Brian O’Connor. Special thanks to Alicia and Chris at Mamie’s Kitchen for hosting the challenge. Thanks to Bex and Toby for all their help with keeping the competition organized.

The top four Steak Bomb challengers, voted for by the Good Morning Gloucester community, are: Cape Ann Brewing, Captain Hooks, Destino’s, and Leonardo’s.

Music ~

James Bond Theme (Dr. No)

Peter Gunn Theme

Mambo Italiano Dean Martin

Produced by Kim Smith for Good Morning Gloucester

Judges Ed Collard, Chris DeWolfe, Brian O’Connor and Craig Kimberley took their judging duty very seriously.  The one part I would say would not be a fair comparison is Cape Ann brewing based on price since their price includes fries, slaw and a pickle.  However even if you threw the value category out Cape Ann Brewing would have come in last.

Captain Hooks wins People Choice with far and away most number of nominations.

Overall Best Gloucester Steak Bomb Challenge winner Based on Value, Taste, Packaging,  Lack of Sogginess and Equal Distribution of Meat is Destinos.

Once again it was noted by all four judges that each one of these subs was a winner.  To be nominated out of all the incredible sub shops in Gloucester is in itself a testament to how great each one of these Steak Bombs are and Cape Ann Brewing, Captain Hooks, Leonardos and Destinos all deserve accolades

Thanks To Mamie’s Kitchen for providing a neutral stage for judging.  Thanks to our sub picker uppers.  thanks to Kim Smith for filming (look for her awesome video Thursday).

You’d be happy to patronize any of these fine eateries.  Today at Mamie’s Kitchen Chris will be serving up his killer Cheese Steak Sub in honor of yesterday’s competition.

Music helps us heal this week

More than likely you know someone who was at the Marathon.  Here’s a small-world example: Vickie’s brother-in-law works for a medical device company in Cedar Falls, Iowa and his boss is the father of the eight-year-old boy who died.  Even if you don’t know someone who was there, you’re probably reeling from the shock that terrorism has struck so close to home.  I know I am.

Music has a way of healing wounds of all kinds.  And musicians have known this since humans began making music (when ever that was).

I was Speaking with T Max today about this and he gave me a quote perfect for this week from Leonard Bernstein, one of my musical heroes — I watched his Young People’s Concerts on TV as a kid (see them on YouTube here).   He says,

“This will be our reply to violence:
to make music more intensely,
more beautifully,
more devotedly than ever before.”

Maestro Bernstein’s healing words ring true as local musicians carry his reply to over a dozen venues in Gloucester and Cape Ann this week.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Tonight T Max is Fly Amero’s guest at The Rhumb Line. (Fly’s on the cover of T Max’s  Noise Magazine this month — read the story here).  Both T Max and Fly are tuned into the power of music to heal (here’s one example of how Fly transformed a dark day).

Tomorrow there’s another Singer/Songwriter Shuffle at Giuseppe’s with top local stars, including Inge Berge, Satch Kerans, Steve Caraway, Will Hunt, Randy Black, Brian O’Connor & Jake Pardee.  And just like last week you will still have time to catch rising star Brad Byrd at The Dog Bar after the Shuffle.  Currently I’m under an intense deadline that is forcing me to work late, but one way or the other, we’ll try to get to at least one local live music show over the next week or so.  And I’m sure it will help us heal.

Here’s a video that may seem a bit idealistic and hippy-dippy-trippy, but I find wisdom appropriate for our time in it’s simple, haunting lyrics especially this stanza:

Nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.
It’s easy.

Cape Ann Giclée

prints
Giclée, great quality and good service right here in Gloucester MA.
There have definitely never been so many options before when it comes to finding a good printshop. When I started making prints it was at the New England school of Photography using film. Box after box of paper and hours in the dark room. Now with digital its pick your best shots and print. I had stuck with my film shop after they went digital and was happy with what I was getting. However as different employees who knew certain kinds of jobs well started to change it was time to find a new printshop.

People are happy to tell about good experiences they’ve had with printshops so I’m happy to say that one of the best printshop I have found in New England is right here in Gloucester MA.

Cape Ann Giclée Printing. I needed prints made for client that wanted them for his office & for the Rockport Art Associations shows so it was time to roll the dice and try a new printer? Do I change my loyalties after 30 years of using the same printer? Do I flip-flop from printer to printer? Yes and no.

Time to change from my old printer and no more flip-flopping. Printing is an art combined with craftsmanship. Many printers own great equipment, but that doesn’t mean they know how to run it. The team at Cape Ann Giclée not only knows both so well it sets them apart from the others I have used in the past. Where do my loyalties lay now? Giclée, great quality and good service right here in Gloucester MA.

Brian O’Connor

I may be an idiot but I’m not stupid!

While enjoying a Fisherman’s brew at Stone’s Pub this fall with Ed, he introduces me to Brian O’Connor aka brianmoc. Since I have seen way too many photos and mp3 movies of Brian reeling in very large striped bass while standing on a wet rock I mention that since I grew up in graniteless Woods Hole fishing I was finding it a challenge fishing from rocks at Andrews Point and I ask for advice. He told me I had to be an idiot if I fished those rocks without wearing a pair of corkers. I prefer not to be an idiot so I asked what a corker was. He spelled it out to me. Korkers with a K. So I asked Santa for a pair and I finally got to try them out even though I didn’t have a rod in my hand.

krokersBrian was right, I was an idiot. Fortunately, my idiocy was curable. These things are nothing short of awesome. Low tide I walked directly across multiple bands of dry and wet strips of grey, green, black, slimy, greasy rocks like I was Spiderman. I even tried out the icy rocks.  Not a problem.

Details: the ones pictured are strap on “Rocktrax Plus Korkers“. 28 carbide steel points in each foot. The boots are a pair I picked up at Olympia Sports (Gloucester Crossing) in a two for one sale they had and I think now they are going to be married to my korkers.

Warning: I feel invincible with these on but as you can see I do try to keep my stupidity from killing me so I take all the advice I can get. I know that these will help me from slipping on the axle grease that grows on the rocks around here but it will not protect me from getting  nailed by that rogue wave and getting tossed in the drink if I don’t pay attention. So even with these on, be careful out there. Brian’s exact advice was, “never turn your back on the water.”

Rubber Duck is not pictured since her korkers have not arrived.
