MILES FOR MEATBALLS WITH CHEF ANTHONY CATURANO, MAYOR SEFATIA, AND WARREN WAUGH AUTOS!

Generous donors rally for breast cancer awareness.

In honor of breast cancer awareness month, Miles for Meatballs today raised a whopping $4,700.00 for breast cancer!!! The event was hosted by Mayor Sefatia, Tonno’s Chef Anthony Caturano, and Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group. The Miles for Meatballs event began with a scenic tour around Cape Ann in luxury cars from the very generous Warren Waugh. The drive was followed by a fabulous late afternoon dinner at Tonno. Chef Anthony prepared his famous homemade meatballs and sausage with zugu/gravy, served over the creamiest polenta you can imagine. The homestyle, yet elegant dinner was accompanied by an outstanding Caesar salad and delicious cannolis. Every Sunday Chef Anthony serves a traditional meatball and zugu/gravy Sunday family dinner and I know where we will be having dinner next Sunday!

Save the Date: Bluefin Blowout 2018!

2018 Bluefin Blowout | August 2-4

With the winter weather hanging in there, summer feels far away….but, thank goodness it isn’t.  And, one of the most exciting things about summer is the Bluefin Blowout!  Planning for this year’s event is very much underway and some fishy fun is shaping up!  You’d be crazy to not mark your calendars right now to make sure that you’re not double booked between August 2nd – 4th.  Even better, let your peeps know that “reel” friends don’t book baby showers, BBQs, or even book clubs during the Bluefin Blowout.

Many of us gathered on Saturday at Tonno Gloucester (lucky, lucky us) to discuss this summer’s tournament and brainstorm ways to make the 2018 Bluefin Blowout the best one yet.  A giant shoutout to Anthony Caturano and the staff at Tonno for spoiling us all with some amazing food to help get the wheels of creativity spinning.

Stay tuned for much more news!  As always the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group has some brilliant things up their sleeves!

Keep up to date on all things Bluefin Blowout at this link

The 2018 Bluefin Blowout marks a 7 year milestone for us! The Bluefin Blowout is New England’s premier giant bluefin tuna tournament presented by the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, and hosted by Cape Ann’s Marina Resort in the historic fishing port of Gloucester, MA! Showcased on the National Geographic’s hit series “Wicked Tuna,” the Bluefin Blowout draws some of the best giant tuna fishermen on the east coast competing in two long days of fishing to take home over $40,000 in cash, jackpots, and prizes along with the coveted Bluefin Blowout Trophy!

In past years we experienced a huge success with over 2800 pounds of bluefin tuna weighed in – the largest being caught by F/V Tuna.com weighing in at 914 lbs!

We invite everyone to enjoy the giant weigh-in station, vendors, tournament tent, live music and entertainment. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for more updated information on the tournament and come celebrate the fishery of the magnificent bluefin tuna in true tournament fashion as the best of the best battle the giants of the ocean!

The Cape Ann’s Marina Resort offers plenty of amenities to make each day, throughout the weekend, a first class experience. In addition to the official tournament tent, the Cape Ann Marina Resort has quality slip accommodations, on-site fuel, Mile Marker One Café and Bar, an indoor pool, an onsite marine store, and more!

The 2018 Bluefin Blowout team will once again offer free boat ice, onsite totes of bait, and an official tournament tuna buyer!

We are also proud to announce our collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Association to raise funds to advance research to end Alzheimer’s and dementia while enhancing care for those living with the disease.

The 2018 Bluefin Blowout will offer select vendor displays, a catered Captain’s Dinner, raffles, a silent auction, and cash prizes!

Come witness this tournament and some of the best giant tuna fishing in the world is showcased in America’s Oldest Seaport!

MAYOR SEFATIA AND TONNO’S ANTHONY CATURANO SUGO VS. GRAVY GREAT COOK-OFF ROUND TWO!

Warren Waugh, Mayor Sefatia, Karen Hanson

Mayor Sefatia and her team, Chef Anthony Caturano and the Tonno staff, and Warren Waugh with Cidalia Schwartz and the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team brought the community together for a fabulous lunch of the Mayor’s “sugo” versus the Chef’s “gravy.” The luncheon included steaming bowls of polenta and sausage with  gravy versus homemade pasta and meatballs dressed with  sugo. Both were wonderfully delicious! Tori Amos and Brian King provided lovely background music and Scottie Mac was the DJ.

Sadly, the day’s event took place without Anthony’s presence. His sister Christina Caturano Ryan passed away from breast cancer several days ago. She was only forty one and left two young children. Anthony was attending Christina’s funeral today. Despite her tragic death, Anthony insisted that the fundraiser take place. His team did a phenomenal job. The staff donated their time and all funds raised goes to the care of cancer patients. We wish to offer our most heartfelt condolences to Anthony.

CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR EVENT HOSTED BY KAREN HANSON AND FEATURING A GALLERY OF PHOTOS BY MAYOR SEFATIA

Cape Ann Plein Air sponsors, supporters, and participating artists were treated to a fabulous party Thursday evening. The event was hosted by the the lovely and generous Karen Hanson, By the Sea Sotheby’s owner, and proud sponsor of Cape Ann Plein Air, at the stunning home of Warren Waugh.

Warren’s home overlooks Eastern Point Lighthouse, Gloucester’s outer harbor, and the great Atlantic beyond. On the rocky outcroppings surrounding the home, participating Cape Ann Plein Air painters were perched with their easels, painting scenic vistas, which could be seen from every angle from this outstanding landscape. Guests at the party had a delightful time speaking with and observing the visiting artists.

For more information about the 2017 Cape Ann Plein Air festival, visit their website here.

Thank you to Mayor Sefatia for providing the terrific gallery of photos!!

ABOUT CAPE ANN PELIN AIR

To all the Artists, Collectors, Organizers, Sponsors and Visitors,

We are thrilled to inform you that we are already well into planning Cape Ann Plein Air (CAPA) – 2017! The overall timeframe and elements of the event will be similar to 2016, occurring the week of Columbus Day and featuring a Gala Art Celebration and Sale at Rockport Art Association and Museum, community Quick Draw event, and many other associated exhibits and cultural activities.

Here is a re-cap of CAPA-2106.
Just over a year ago, the idea of Cape Ann Plein Air had been just that, an idea, a great concept aspiring to bring renowned painters to this culturally historic and stunningly beautiful place. Plein Air events, where artists travel from all corners of North America to compete for significant prize money, occur dozens of times or more every year in the United States. Yet there has never been a national level event here in Cape Ann where some of the most famous artists in US history have painted en plein air. No single region is more famously recognized than Cape Ann, which provided the creative inspiration over the last two hundred years and hosted our history’s giants like Winslow Homer, Fitz Henry Lane, Edward Hopper, and N.C. Wyeth, just to name a few.
The crucial first step to launching a Plein Air Event requires raising significant prize money. Following a meeting with Applied Materials management back in January, the Applied Material Foundation agreed to provide the underwriting necessary to take Cape Ann Plein Air from a great concept to reality. Without the support of the Applied Materials Foundation, we would not be enjoying this incredible experience right now . . . and neither would you!
With that key financial backing in place early in the year, the small group of individuals informally organized as Cape Ann Plein Air 2016 (CAPA2016) went out into the community and raised funds allowing us to sponsor 25 more awards beyond the top three prizes. The additional funding provided by Stephen and Jill Bell, Linzee and Beth Coolidge, By-The-Sea Sotheby’s International Realty and the law firm of Glovsky and Glovsky, all have given CAPA 2016 national standing among all other Plein Air competitions.
Thanks to the help of local individuals and businesses, additional sponsors and Friends of CAPA 2016, we have been provided the resources to make CAPA 2016 more appealing to artists, collectors, visitors and local businesses, much more than we originally thought possible.
There are too many to name in this letter, so please read page four in the 2016 program book for the entire list of those for whose generosity we are incredibly grateful.
Finally, we would like to offer a special thanks for those who have met once and often twice a week for the last year, and spent hundreds of hours taking care of each and every part of the design and implementation of CAPA 2016. They include but are not limited to the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce (CACC), the Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS), Rockport Art Association and Museum, North Shore Art Association, Essex Merchants Group, Rockport Cultural District, and Rocky Neck Art Colony.
We also would like to thank the City of Gloucester and the Towns of Essex, Rockport and Manchester-by-the-Sea for all of the logistical support required to manage such a broadreaching geographical event. Without having to ask, we were provided marketing and hospitality to reach out to a broader group of visitors from Discover Gloucester, the Manchester Historical Society and the Copley Society in Boston. Most importantly, we owe a big thanks to project leader Karen Ristuben who stayed on top of each and every detail along the way. And there have been many.
This undertaking represents a major collaboration among the arts, business and the community throughout Cape Ann, the first of its kind. As a result the Cape Ann Community Foundation is both excited and overwhelmed by the inspirational work so many have contributed. Thank you again for your participation on every level and tireless effort to make this the first of many future successful Cape Ann Plein Air events.
Sincerely,
Ken Riehl, CEO
Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce
James Caviston, President, Society for the Encouragement of the Arts

FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS RAISED FOR THE ALZHEIMER’S ASSOCIATION!

A check for fifty thousand dollars was presented to the Alzheimer’s Association by Warren Waugh of Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and Mayor Sefatia Monday evening. Held at the Beauport Hotel, the check-presenting event celebrated the donations raised from the Bluefin Blowout Tournament’s live auction, silent auction, and from a percentage of the tournament’s daily jackpot.  Cidalia Schwartz, Mayor Sefatia, and Warren Waugh

Bluefin Blowout, Final Results

This is the Bluefin Blowout. Highlights 2017

2017 Sidewalk Bazaar

  •   Danielle Capalbo asked me to post her photos and appreciation to GMG for helping promote Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar
  • Billy Goulart, owner of Nana’s Fried Dough in Gloucester, wiped off a “gift” our seagull friends left on the electric BMWs that Lyon-Waugh Auto Group and BMW of Peabody had donated to the Gloucester Police Department.  The two vehicles were on display at the Sidewalk Bazaar to promote the use of green energy.
  • The B-Fit Team of the Bruins Foundation was a popular stop for our young athletes!  The B-Fit team is a community outreach program whose primary objective is to increase the overall wellness of the New England community through fitness and dietary education.
  • Another popular stop is the puppet show.
  • The DPW, Fire Department and the Police were all hard at work supporting the Bazaar before and during the 3-day event.  A visitor dropped something down a drain-hole, and the DPW was called on to help retrieve it.

Thanks to our sponsors: The Cape Ann Savings Bank, The Randazza Group, Horvitz & Frisch and Lahey Health.

Key volunteers who helped out at the event: John Orlando with the Harborview Inn, Patty Gates with Cape Ann Olive Oil and Premier Imprints,  Elizabeth Carey with Discover Gloucester, Melissa Cox, Ward II Councilor,  Elliott Margolis, Josiah Fisk with More Carrot, Michaela DiPersia, and Kathleen Adams.  Thanks also go to Brass Monkey and Bank Gloucester for the use of their parking lot.  The Clean Team from the Cape Ann YMCA did an awesome job keeping Main Street clean throughout the event!

Many thanks to GMG for helping with getting the word out!

Coordinator, 2017 Gloucester Sidewalk Bazaar

This is the Bluefin Blowout. Highlights 2017.

My video highlights of this year’s #bluefinblowout tournament. Lots of fish, lots of laughs, lots of money earned, and…most importantly…lots of money raised for the Alzheimer’s Association.  A huge congratulations to the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group including Warren Waugh, Cidalia Schwartz, Kruti Kansara, and the rest of their team, as well as, Drew Hale, and Rob Bouley!

Bluefin Blowout, Final Results

With more than a dozen and close to twenty fish landed in all…and eleven fish presented for official weigh-in…this year’s Bluefin Blowout was one for the record books.  Long story short…if you didn’t make it down this year…be sure to make it next year.  Eight fish came in Friday night (see post here) and three more came in on Saturday…those fish are show in the photos below.

Drew Hale and Rob Bouley were, as always, a huge presence and an integral part of the event’s massive success.  Warren Waugh and his Lyon-Waugh Auto Group team, led by Cidalia Schwartz, took over the reigns (or reels) this year and pulled off four days of back to back tremendous events.  The tournament is clearly geared to the captains and crews who pay for entry, but thanks to a million little (and big) details, the Bluefin Blowout is an event that all of Cape Ann can enjoy in a variety of ways.  Food, drinks, music, vendors, family activities, games, contests, and more make Cape Ann’s Marina Resort the place to be all weekend long.  On that note, anyone would be remiss to not mention Tobin and Drew Dominick, as well as, Joe Loiacano and their entire staff for being truly all hands on deck for this event. It should not go unnoticed just how much effort it takes to pull all of this off.  Scott Marshall, the official Weigh Master from Compass Seafood, worked non-stop to clean the fish for official weigh-in for 4 hours straight on Friday and was back at it on Saturday.   Ipswich Clambake, with some pretty spectacular teamwork, executed some giant meals for some pretty hungry crews. And…of course, Goslings, Titos, and Bud Light kept everyone well hydrated.  A super important…and much appreciated job. DJ Scottie Macthe official voice of the Bluefin Blowout, was there keeping the crowd enthusiastic all weekend long and it wouldn’t be the same without him. Ipswich Bay Cornhole League helped add to the fun during Saturday’s tournament hours.

Not only were the fish big, but the money raised for the Alzheimer’s Foundation was even bigger….and as exciting as it is to watch the giant bluefin back into the dock…at the end of the day, the charity is what matters the most.  In the midst of some fantastic fishing and TONS of laughter…everyone was keenly aware that the real task at hand was to raise that money.  So many people, most notably Warren Waugh of the Lyon-Waugh Auto Group, stepped up BIG time!  I hesitate to list all of the amazing acts of kindness because I know I’ll miss some, but I watched captains donate dollars based on the size of their boats, I watched Captains donate the proceeds from the sale of their fish, and I watched winning captains donate back a portion of their tournament take.  So many sponsors and vendors offered up unbelievably generous items for both the silent and live auctions….and as gifts for the captains and crews.  Captain Steve Mscisz and his family donated their home on Nantucket to the live auction, Anthony Caturano and Tonno Restaurant along with Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken are providing two evenings of culinary perfection to the winning bidders, Lyon-Waugh auctioned off a weekend long Porsche rental to the two top bidders, and Three Lantern Marine and Fishing donated some pretty impressive tuna rods…along with so many other fishing supplies.  Captain TJ Ott also offered up his boat, the Hot Tuna (of Wicked Tuna fame) for a private charter after production ends this season!  The list truly goes on and on.

Several other people and organizations need to be thanked so please take a moment to check out the sponsor page at http://bluefinblowout.com/our-sponsors/http://bluefinblowout.com/our-sponsors/

Monies raised? you may ask…..   Well, the live auction alone raised more than $21,000 for Alzheimer’s!  The silent auction, while I’m not certain of the exact number yet, brought in a substantial amount more.

The money collected for the Tournament Daily Jackpot was $11,600 and 10% of that also went to the Alzheimer’s foundation.

The final results for the Bluefin Blowout look like this:

Sweet Caroline III, Captain Alan Murray and crew. 540 pounds

Took home $15,000 for their 1st place fish as well as a watch and a nautical clock both from Long’s Jewelers and a Zombait Lure.   A two-year lease of an Audi A3…valued at $12,000 thanks to Lyon-Waugh.

Kelly Ann, Captain Mauro Dibacco and crew. 472 pounds

Fun Guaranteed. Giant Tuna Expected. Bluefin Blowout 2017.

This is, without a doubt, the place to be this weekend…starting early this afternoon. Check out the schedule of events in the first few photos below.  Wednesday night’s private event was fantastic…and last night’s Captains’ Party was no joke at all.

Be certain to come down at some point, have a great time, and maybe bid on some auction items to help raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association! The Lyon-Waugh Auto Group has gone all out and, as always, Cape Ann’s Marina Resort is the perfect venue.

Captains and crews left the docks late last night or early this morning and hopefully some large tuna will be landed later today.
