“TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD” TRIUMPHS AT GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY!

To Kill a Mockingbird Triumphs at Gloucester Stage Company

By Tom Hauck

The Gloucester Stage Company is renowned for introducing important new plays to New England and often the world. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the company proves it has the same magic touch with a story that since its publication in 1960 has become an American classic. The stage version, written by Christopher Sergel, made its debut in 1990, and won the Pulitzer Prize.

The GSC production of To Kill a Mockingbird is nothing less than a magnificent shooting star streaking across the heavens and with only a month of performances, you must see this masterful interpretation before it vanishes into the night. Every aspect of the production, directed by Boston stage legend Judy Braha, is exceptional. Led by GSC veterans Amanda Collins as the grown-up Scout and Lewis D. Wheeler as Atticus Finch, with Aaron Dowdy as Tom Robinson and Cheryl D. Singleton as Calpurnia, Carly Williams (Scout), Nathaniel Oaks (Jem), and Gabriel Magee (Dill) as the children, the cast is pitch-perfect throughout. They’re supported by an evocative and flexible set designed by Jon Savage and sublime lighting by John Malinowski. The lighting, in particular, effectively sets the mood for each scene, whether it’s the ramshackle courthouse interior or the deep and mysterious woods on Halloween night.

This is a great story masterfully interpreted by an outstanding company. To Kill a Mockingbird  deeply touches our hearts and connect us with the humanity of each of the characters. The GSC production is outstanding on every level, and it is my guess that during the final scene when Boo Radley makes his appearance, you will be among the many people in the audience who feel tears gathering in their eyes.

To Kill a Mockingbird is onstage now through October 28. For schedules and ticket information, visit www.gloucesterstage.com or call 978-281-4433. A smash hit, get your tickets today!

EASTERN POINT LIT HOUSE AND DUCKWORTH’S BOOK CLUB CELEBRATE THREE YEARS OF GREAT BOOKS AND WONDERFUL DINNERS!

Eastern Point Lit House Duckworths -3 kim SmithEastern Point Lit House co-founder Chris Anderson led a heartfelt discussion on To Kill a Mockingbird, his favorite book, as it is for so many. I hadn’t read the book since junior high school and wholeheartedly recommend that if you haven’t in a long while, do. Although I’ve seen the movie several times since and know the outcome, I couldn’t put the book down and did something I haven’t been compelled to do in some time, which is to stay up and read a book in one night. The themes beautifully explored and woven throughout this literary classic, of racism, social inequality, ignorance, coming of age, good versus evil, raising children in a community (no matter how flawed), bravery, and injustice are as relevant today as when the book was first published in 1960. The masterful story telling by Harper Lee leaves you with a deep sense of hope and compassion for your fellow human.

On June 26th, author Julia Glass is leading the discussion on the graphic novel Fun Home by Alison Bechdel. For more information and the complete 2016 Book Club Schedule visit the Eastern Point Lit House website here.

The Writer’s Book Club at Duckworth’s Bistrot

Christopher Anderson writes-

Hi Joey,

I hope this finds you well. Can you help spread the word on a very special book club series happening this summer at Duckworth’s Bistrot?

Duckworth’s Bistrot and Eastern Point Lit House & Press are hosting a series of book club events featuring an exciting lineup of great writers coming by to hang out and lead a discussion about the books they love over fine wine (or beer) and fresh, seasonal appetizers. I’ll be kicking things off with my partner at Eastern Point Lit House, poet Jenn Monroe, on Sunday, May 26 (5:00 PM) with a discussion of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. Tickets for our first meeting are $35 (includes wine/beer, food, and lively discussion), and are available now at www.easternpointlithouse.com. Seating is limited, so you don’t want to wait. It’s sure to be a great time.

Future authors include JoeAnn Hart (June 23), Tim Horvath (July 14), Anna Solomon (August 18), and Steve Almond (September 15). Tickets for these events go on sale soon.

Expect magic. Ken and I are aiming for nothing less. And to answer the question that is sure to be asked, the reason we’re not serving a full dinner is so Ken can participate in the discussion. You can bet the appetizers are sure to be nothing short of amazing, and the discussion even better.

Much gratitude for all you and your team do!

Cheers,

Chris
