Monthly Archives: December 2017

Thank you to Cape Ann Art Haven’s program director Cathy Kelley and executive director Traci Thayne Corbett for the invitation to photograph this year’s Lobster Trap Tree lighting and buoy painting. The joy was all mine–the children’s enthusiasm, the pride and joy on their faces, the parent’s participation, and the priceless gift of community spirit make this one of Cape Ann’s most cherished (and most fun) holiday traditions. And it has been wonderful to see how conscientiously Traci and Cathy run the program and how caring and thoughtful they are with the children.

Did you know that Cape Art Haven buoy painting is 100 percent FREE and open to the entire community?

What has become a much beloved Cape Ann tradition is a way of saying thank you from Art Haven to the community. If you haven’t already done so, please consider donating to this tremendously worthwhile organization. Not only is buoy painting free, but all the programs Art Haven offers are available to everyone, whether or not they have the ability to pay. Visit the Cape Ann Art Haven website here to learn more about classes, scholarships, the teen guild, and more.

So, please, donate to Art Haven today!

Read more HERE

Come one, come all and see the splendor of our illuminated winter gardens. Many holidays and festivals are based on lights, some even being called a Festival of Lights, like Diwali for Hinduism, Sikhism, and Jainism, and Hanukah for Judaism. Christianity also celebrates using lights, seen on a Christmas tree or in a snowcapped windowsill. Tonight, visitors are invited to explore the grounds of the Stevens-Coolidge Place as they twinkle and shine with holiday lights that brighten the landscape during this holiday season. Pick up a song book and sing holiday songs or simply listen to others as you warm up with hot cocoa and make s’mores around our outdoor fire pit.

This is a three-weekend event. Full event schedule includes:

Friday, December 8 through Sunday, December 10, 5-7pm
Friday, December 15 through Sunday, December 17, 5-7pm
Friday, December 22 through Saturday, December 23 5-7pm

Post Storm Rewards

Wednesday December 6 seemed to be a popular day for closures.  Lone Gull closed for electrical work; Cape Ann Museum closed to public for event; Parker River National Wildlife Refuge closed for Deer Hunt (yes, that’s what the sign said).  We were turned off Rt 133 – closed for unknown reasons.  We ran into a washed out road at Rough Meadows Wildlife Sanctuary and turned back.

BUT the ocean was open for business and it was just spectacular at Eastern Point.

Come to the GAAC Holiday Party Dec 8!

Cape Ann Community

GAAC is extremely fortunate to have Sky & Telescope Magazine Senior Editor Kelly Beatty as our speaker for the December 8 Holiday party, with a riveting presentation on “The Sputnik Years.” Kelly will show us how it all happened, who was involved, and what some of the many important historic results of that event have been.

October 4, 1957 marked the beginning of the Space Age, with the launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union. The satellite sped by over the heads of the world, and the space race was on. Everything that came later, from John Glenn to Neil Armstrong, from the Mercury rockets to the moon landings, to the Voyagers and the Rovers, to New Horizons’ visit to Pluto, follows from this one little satellite.

Kelly Beatty has been honored twice by the Division for Planetary Sciences (DPS) of the American Astronomical Society. In 2005 he received the…
