Vesuvius is Burning

IMG_3796Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano whose massive eruption buried the ancient town of Pompeii in 79AD,is. burning again. This time it’s not due to a volcanic eruption, but instead, a massive wildfire has spread across its flanks. Access to the mountain has been prohibited and some areas have been evacuated.

This photo was taken from Sorrento, across Naples Bay.

  • Wow!! What a great shot! Thanks for sharing!

  • Impressive picture! During my recent trip in Campania, I visited Mount Vesuvius. I sneaked myself up to the crater, bypassing the gate and avoiding the ticket fee (not for the money but for the adventure’s sake in its own right). I just published today on my blog the story of the first trespassing attempt, starting all the way from Pompei overnight, which was, after all, unsuccessful as I got busted by a military patrol (positioned there to guard against arsons). I’d be glad to hear impressions in case anyone’s keen to read through this story.
