they say it will go to beach but no guarantee it will. why not make 25% of all beach revenue go back to beaches for cleaning safety and improvements
Would this sticker increase proposal have anything to do with the city’s recently voided contract with Hiltz Waste Disposal??? I noticed that the sticker increase would go to the general fund that covers curb-side trash/recycling pick-up, and the city has been left scrambling to replace said contact. I imagine a city left in a jam to find a waste removal contract at the 11th hour, wasn’t able to exactly negotiate the best terms….

This has absolutely nothing to do with the voided contract. This sticker increase has been put forth by the Gloucester Beach & Park Clean Team with the goal of providing funds to the DPW for beach specific needs.

Without doubt, the very first thing that needs to be done is repair the fencing that protects the dunes. Next is to add signage to let people know not to climb on the dunes. Currently, the fence is bent beyond recognition and mashed down, virtually at the same height as the sand. People tromp through the dunes to take shortcuts and to also use as a bathroom. The dunes are habitat for myriad species of wildlife and also help to protect the marsh and surrounding homeowner’s properties
I only buy the sticker so I can take my dog to the dog park. I don’t think it’s fair that I have to pay an increase for jobs that should already being done at and for the beach,,such as Life guards and clean up.
Keep in mind “beach” stickers have to be purchased to park at Stage Fort Park even if you are just going to the dog park. I think you also need one to bring compost to Dogtown. So some people may not want to pay more for beach-related upkeep.We have 4 vehicles in my household. It’s already $80.00/year, $100.00 is painful ☹️
We made a call to the DPW to check on this. You do not need a beach sticker to use the compost facility. You do need one to park at the dog park as that shares the parking lot with all of the stage fort park facilities. While this may affect a population of folks who use the dog park, but don’t use the beaches, our hope is that the revenue it will bring in is seen as a positive one and supported by dog park goers.
Hi Susan – it would be required to go to beach cleanliness and safety. It would not be able to be used for materials, equipment, training, etc. that are not beach related.
I think our beach stickers and the fact that we are never turned away is amazing. I would support more than $5. Keeping our beaches clean and safe is a great endeavor.
How about simply extending the hours to 6 or 7PM for cars to pay a parking fee at the beaches? Cars are streaming in as soon as the attendants leave at 4 or 5PM. On some hot evenings there are thousands of people on the beach until dark.
I would like to see what Gehr percentage of the $30.00 fee to park on Wingersheek and Good Harbor on weekends and the $25.00 for weekdays goes to cleaning these beaches after many sell out days and weekends this season
Currently what % goes to cleanup. We are charging non stickers $25 for good harbor bracket and Wingersheek for weekdays and $30 for weekends. We have had s banner season this year.
What type of “cleaning”? I think most residents carry in/carry out. Stage Fort park is another story, it’s a mess on Monday morning after a weekend of out of towners. I’d support it if I understood clearly what the money was going to.
The money would go towards items such as:
-Equipment: we currently have one raking machine. When it goes in for service or breaks we do not have a backup.
-Additional Employee Hours for clean up efforts on a more regular basis.
-Beach Safety Repairs. Are the boardwalks safe? Does a ramp need repair so nobody injures themselves?
-Additional Lighting or security measures at beaches that require it.
This is easy. $25 is still a bargain. A no brainer. And if you don’t think there is a trash problem, visit Good Harbor at about 6 pm. That stuff is heading out into our ocean–and entering the food chain. Plastic pollution entering our oceans is one of the biggest environmental disasters of our time.
I am okay with a $5 additional fee HOWEVER the City makes over $1m from beach parking fees and pays our lifeguards squat. We need high quality water-safety staff in place well beyond Labor Day – or we are opening ourselves to a City lawsuit
I wish Gloucester treated our beaches as a natural resource that needs to be preserved and not as an automatic cash cow to funnel funds to other needs.
And I think smoking should be banned on public beaches. I spent today down-wind of a cigar smoker on Niles and it truly ruined my enjoyment of our public seashore – on which I could park because I have a City Beach Sticka.

I support the $5 increase, but why doesn’t 100% of the beach revenue go back into the beaches? The money should be set aside in an enterprise fund just like mooring fees are, and 100% of it should go back into the beaches. There would be plenty of funding to hire properly trained personnel to staff the beaches, and think about how clean and well maintained our beaches would be if they were run correctly!!!

Here’s a novel idea, CLEAN THE ENTIRE CITY. Most streets are an embarrassment. And no to an increase, I pay enough already.
