Seagull fledgling ©Kim Smith 2015Heather Dagle from 7 Seas Whale Watch reports that this sweet fledgling appeared several days ago after its nest, which was located at Fisherman’s Wharf, was destroyed in a recent storm. He/she has yet to learn how to fly however, its Mom stops by daily to feed it regurgitated food. After seeing how much the fledgling enjoyed splashing around in a bowl of water placed there by Heather and Kate, I dropped off a big galvanized tub. Heather promises to send a picture if he jumps in!

Did you know that 7 Seas Whale Watch was voted best Boston’s Best Whale Watching company by WGBH-Boston Reader’s Poll? Check out their website Here.

What to Do if You Find a Seal on the Beach

Good Morning Gloucester reader Anita sent along a photo of a young seal perched on the Annisquam. It reminded me to post my Seal PSA, which I think is a good idea to do annually, especially at this time of year when many young seals beach themselves. They are usually not injured or ill and only need to rest, or occasionally, to escape danger (think shark). Never approach a hauled out seal; simply leave it to recuperate and make its way back to the water in its own time.

Thanks so much Anita for submitting your photo!

Diane Blue Tonight! Dave Sag’s Blues Party 8:30pm @ The Rhumb Line 7.30.2015

Dave says,

A major chunk of the Boston blues scene is gonna come crashing on your head this Thursday night, as I welcome back the Octomom® of the Blues: Ms. Diane Blue. The Divine Miss B has been busy and to show appreciation, she’s dragging in some of the top players around. The corpus delicti consists of Mr. Bobby Gus, glitar wunderkind and general ding dong daddy, Mr. Joe Bargar keyboard arachnid and swelling reducer, and the fabulous Mr. Steve Bankuti, algorhythmist, on the skins. This is a dangerous band. I’m wearing my truss. Ask your doctor if the blues Bash is right for you.

Drumming at Trefrey Park

mamadou and henry

The usual drumming class with Mamadou takes place at the Rocky Neck Cultural Center on Tuesday evenings at 6:00 (all are welcome).  This Tuesday the weather was so beautiful, they decided to move to Trefrey Park.  They sounded great and people stopped to listen and watch, including my mother and I.  Henry the dog was so moved by the sound that he flipped on his back and pawed the air to the beat of the drums.  It was hysterical how well he kept to the beat and truly enjoyed himself.

Open House at the White-Ellery (1710)

Historic Home free and open to the public
for 17th
 Century Saturdays

The Cape Ann Museum, which owns and operates this historic property, will open the White-Ellery House on Saturday, August 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Museum docents and staff will be on hand to educate the public about the unique house and its history. The house is located at 245 Washington Street at the corner of Poplar Street in Gloucester and is open to the public at no charge on the first Saturday of the month from May through October as part of Escapes North 17th Century Saturdays. Parking is available off Poplar Street in the field behind the house.

The White-Ellery House was built in 1710 and is one of just a handful of First Period houses in Eastern Massachusetts that survives to this day. Unlike other structures of this period, the largely unfurnished house has had very few interior alterations over the years. Stepping inside today, visitors enter much the same house they would have 300 years ago.

The recently renovated Cape Ann Museum celebrates the art, history and culture of Cape Ann – a region with a rich and varied culture of nationally significant historical, industrial and artistic achievement. The Museum’s collections include fine art from the 19th century to the present, artifacts from the fishing & maritime and granite quarrying industries, textiles, furniture, a library/archives, and two historic houses. For a detailed media fact sheet please visit

The Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Admission is $10.00 adults, $8.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Youth (under 18) and Museum members are free. For more information please call: (978)283-0455 x10. Additional information can be found online at

Step on a Crack – Break your mother’s back

“Step on a Crack – Break your mother’s back” or

Step on a Crack and Trees will Fall and Sidewalks will disappear.

This all happened in  less than 48 hours..  after a 24 “ crack in the sidewalk was lifted 1/4” high by a tree root.

Nichole’s Picks 8/1 +8/2

August!  Yikes.  Slooooooow down, summer.

Pick #1     The Thomas E. Lannon

Thanks to Kim Smith for reminding us that kids sail free on Saturday mornings on the Thomas E. Lannon.  Take advantage of that great offer and receive one free child ticket for each adult ticket purchased.

Check out their website HERE!

Pick #2  The Stage Fort Park CATA Trolley Shuttle

Thanks to Joey for reminding us that the CATA Trolley departs from Stage Fort park and makes stops all around Gloucester.  Parking at Stage Fort is FREE if you are riding the shuttle and ticket prices are the best take around at only $1 or $3 to hop on and off all day long!  Seriously!

The boys and I will often grab some smoothies and an ice coffee and just go for the round trip ride around the Cape to kill some time.  Totally an awesome thing to do….and even better if you want to hop off at Harbor Loop for a bit, or spend some time at Good Harbor Beach without the hassle (or cost) of parking, or walk around Rocky Neck and grab a bite to eat or an ice cream.  My only wish is that it was available on weekdays too!  For now, it is just weekends and holidays.

See Joey’s post HERE

And see the official website HERE

Pick #3  Beverly Homecoming

Welcome to the 50th annual Beverly Homecoming celebration!
