School Arts Festival Saturday, May 9

Aria McElhenny submits-

Hi Joey –

On Saturday May 9, an incredible annual event will fill downtown Gloucester with art, music, theater and dance! The Gloucester Public Schools arts festival is a showcase of student artwork from all of our schools. This year for the first time, Gloucester preschool students will be participating too, making the festival the biggest it’s ever been.

Paintings, drawings and sculptures from students in grades preschool through 12th will be on display all over town. Tons of local businesses have jumped on board and volunteered to display art in their windows and on their walls.

Concerts, drama workshops, dance demonstrations and more will take place all day at City Hall, Cape Ann Museum and Sawyer free library.

A painting project run by West Parish art teacher Paula Morgan will be going on all day at the Cape Ann Museum sculpture park – everyone’s invited to grab a brush and help create giant, colorful, collaborative paintings!

Check out our fun video and the schedule below for more info. The festival is free and open to the public- hope to see you there!

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer raises money for breast cancer care and research through delicious dessert-filled events.

For the second year in a row, the Serenitee Restaurant Group, including Alchemy and Latitude 43 in Gloucester, is participating in the week-long event.  For the event, each restaurant has created their own special dessert, like Latitude 43’s BRA-zilian Panna Cotta, and 100% of the sales from that dessert will go directly to Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer.

To participate, all you have to do is come in to Latitude 43, Alchemy or one of the other participating restaurants and order the special dessert. It’s that simple!

Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer will be held Monday, May 4 through Sunday, May 10, 2015.

Last year, Boston Bakes for Breast Cancer had almost 350 participants in over 100 Massachusetts communities and raised over $78,000. Let’s make this year even better!

F’D UP FRIDAY!

2014-11-17_1506

“It seems that the Antarctic may be a hotspot for documenting disturbing animal sex acts. Many years ago, British explorer George Murray Levick caught Adélie penguins engaging in all sorts of debauchery, such as necrophilia, sexual coercion and sexual abuse of chicks. Now, scientists have observed fur seals trying to have sex with penguins. While these observations may not be as shocking as what Levick documented, they are unusual nonetheless.

This bizarre sexual behavior was actually first documented in 2006 when scientists spotted a fur seal trying to copulate with a king penguin on Marion Island, a remote and mostly barren island in the sub-Antarctic. At the time, the researchers speculated that the incident may have occurred because the seal was frustrated or sexually inexperienced. Alternatively, they suggested, it could have been an act of aggression as the seal attempted to protect its territory. Or it simply could have been a playful act that turned sexual.

Upon returning to the island to continue wildlife observations, scientists observed the strange act a further three times, which took them by surprise to say the least.

“Honestly I did not expect that follow up sightings of a similar nature to that 2006 one would ever be made again,” said lead scientist Nico de Bruyn, “and certainly not on multiple occasions.”

As described in the journal Polar Biology, the team observed young male Antarctic fur seals sexually coercing (using force to achieve mating) king penguins on three separate occasions. The gender of the penguins was unknown, but they appeared to be in good health.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE

Magnolia 525

New and exciting things are always happening at 525 Tavern on Lexington Avenue. Catherine Hull, GM of The Loiacano Companies, sent me the new spring/summer menu and invited me to try some of the meals before the restaurant opened on Thursday. The food was so good, the type of food you want to lick the plate clean. Below are some photos of the great food in this jewel of a restaurant in Magnolia. Remember to make some time and dine at this restaurant. It made my whole week. The restaurant also uses recyclable and reusable take out and left over containers.

Press Release
Magnolia 525 Tavern Introduces Fresh New Spring/Summer Menu
Gloucester, MA (May 1, 2015) – The 525 Tavern invites you to taste some fresh new additions to our Spring/Summer Menu. We kept your favorite authentic recipes and added some light and delicious new treats. Known for great music, great food & great friends … the 525 is your local tavern for made-from-scratch cuisine and a welcoming atmosphere. Everything from sauces to entrees, hand cut fries to hand dipped onion rings are all house made in in our 525 kitchen. And almost every single item on our menu can be gluten free. The new dinner menu now features a favorite pick of the neighborhood – the Seared Ginger Soy Salmon. The fresh caught salmon is seared to perfection with ginger and soy and accompanied with baby bok choy, sweet chili stir fry and our own udon noodles … an absolute must try.
Bruschetta was suggested by the 525 locals, so we baked a delicious loaf of focaccia, lightly grilled and topped it with tomatoes, capers and fresh mozzarella to create a light and healthy summer treat!

The bar menu now boasts a new selection of award winning wines and summer-time draught and bottled beers – all tasted and approved by our guests. New martinis and craft cocktails
highlight the history of infamous Magnolia from “The Hammond’s Hammer” to the “Oceanside Hotel.” The wide variety of new cocktails feature freshly muddled mint, strawberries, blueberries, lime, lemon and everything good about summer.

“Visit from the Thrush Fairy”

I spent half an hour with the AGH hospital Dietician today, and finally understood how to efficiently hydrate and fatten up my boney body: mayo slathered into tuna or chicken salad; biscuits with real butter and jam with a scrambled egg; full fat ice cream with syrup. There are 8 pages of healthy dishes for folks like me, and I can’t wait to dig in with my new found knowledge. Bon Appetit!

Possibilities

While I’ve lived in Rockport since the year 2000 and, having been born and raised elsewhere on the North Shore, had visited countless times before actually moving here…I don’t know much about the Blacksmith Shop Restaurant.  Surely someone can educate me on the restaurant’s history and on why it is has been empty for so many years.  I pass by it countless times per week and always think, “Such a great location.”

I know I ate there YEARS ago…and, more recently, I remember one quick meal when Thatcher (now almost 8) was an infant, but that’s it.  If memory serves me, I can recall walking by several times during the past 6 years or so and seeing construction being done or repairs being made.  I think it may have reopened briefly, but maybe not.

Regardless of my lack of knowledge, I can’t help but think it’d make a sweet place to eat!

Any bidders?
