Went walking on Old Salem Path and came across a beautiful butterfly bush with a butterfly and some other sort of flying bee. Anyone know what kind of bee it is? I love the butterfly eating upside down.

Hi Donna,
Not a bee, but a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth. Here’s a link to an article that I wrote about Clearwings if you’d like to learn more: http://kimsmithdesigns.wordpress.com/2011/08/03/hummingbird-clearwing-moth/
The butterfly looks like an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail, but it could easily be a Canadian Tiger Swallowtail, too, because in our region, they cross breed.

We have a butterfly bush in our yard and are visited by those bee-like creatures, and we’ve been told they are “clear-wing moths.” They’re really amazing.

Exquisite photography. Always a pleasure to view your work, Kim and Donna. My three yr. old granddaughter just said “Wow!” followed by “Yummy.” (I told her we don’t eat butterflies and she laughed; she’s being quite silly today. It’s a wonderful age.)
