After blowing it up to as high a clear resolution as I could, there is no doubt that it is a BIG shark, possibly a Great White. As for why there is no wake; it was not on the surface; just came out of the water and, has not splashed back in.
I can assure you it’s no photos hop. Zack aboard the Lady J took the picture and believe me as hard as these guys work, they don’t have the time or inclination to send me a photoshopped picture.
Joey’s right, no photoshop job. When I enlarged the picture, I saw the blur but, it was the movement of the shark and spray off it’s body. That animal weighed well over 1,000 lbs. and had to be traveling at some speed just to break the surface of the water. After I retired, I lived on Cape Cod for four years. I worked for the owner of several charter boats and flew with our spotter plane a number of times spotting Tuna East of Chatham. Often saw Great Whites do the same thing..

you can tell what kind of an animal it is by the tail.

You can tell it’s a shark by it’s tail among other things but, you cannot tell what kind of shark by it’s tail.

I never knew basking sharks breached like this. I alway though of them as slow moving and kind of lethargic.
