On Tuesday, May 13th, at 6pm, I will be giving a free guided tour of the butterfly gardens at Willowdale Estate, located in Topsfield. After the garden tour, we will have a screening of my film, Life Story of the Black Swallowtail Butterfly, and serve a selection of Willowdale’s exquisite refreshments. I hope you can join us! For the month of April I, along with Noah Quist, Willowdale’s new Director of Businesss Development, are featured in the Willowdale newsletter’s Meet the Team. Sarah Boucher, Willowdale’s Senior Sales and Marketing Director asked several questions of me for the feature. The following answer is in response to a question about creating welcoming habitat gardens, “My passion for creating butterfly and habitat gardens developed initially because I think butterflies and songbirds are exquisitely beautiful creatures and I wanted to draw these wild things to the gardens that I was designing. Butterflies and songbirds bring a garden to life with their grace in movement and fascinating life stories. The more that I learn, the greater the need becomes apparent for sharing information about the connection between native wildflowers and the web of life that they support.”

We had a nice field trip on Friday night. Saw spotted sals, wood frogs and spring peepers at Stillington. Spermatophores, WF eggs and SS eggs. And some lovely leeches. Then to long and narrow for some fairy shrimp, a newt, more spotteds.
Weather looks promising for tomorrow night. If we get the rain they’re talking about then we should see some migration. So….

The Magnolia Historical Society Art was a great success. Wonderful artists, food, thanks to Classic Cooks and the artists and visitors. There were over 500 visitors during the weekend. Here are a couple of photos.
During the Art Sale at the Magnolia Historical Society last weekend, a Magnolia resident came in with an original coat hanger from the hotel. The following is photo plus a GMG post from a couple of years ago.
Memories Of The Oceanside Hotel, Magnolia MA In 1931 From George Krewson III. My Dad purchased the Oceanside Hotel at Magnolia in 1931. I was 6 at the time. He kept it until 1946. Dad had no idea how to operate a hotel, having most previous experience in the building business. When the 1929 depression hit he was out of building and just happened to acquire the Oceanside by what he called “trading cats for dogs.” He and Mom learned quickly, and within a few years a guest suggested that they journey down to Thomasville, GA and have a look a winter resort inn there. They liked what they saw and purchased the inn. Each year for the next 11 years they thrived on the resort hotel business–the Oceanside at Magnolia in the summer, and the Three Toms Inn at Thomasville in the winter, Needless to say I cam to really love growing up in the business. Then came WW II and changes in all family’s lives.
Magnolia and the Oceanside, in particular, will always remain as a fond memory.

*note the well done hash browns cooked to perfection. Too many places serve up their hash browns undercooked. May as well not serve em at all.
Hi! My name is Dave and I am residing at the Cape Ann Animal Aid, located at the Christopher Cutler Rich Animal Shelter in Gloucester. I am sweet, affectionate and loving – by the way, I am on the left; my brother on the right thinks he knows how to sing. We are here at the shelter with our other siblings. I can be a little shy, but one I know you like me back; I am fine. I think I am a Retriever mix. I am only four months old, but will be medium in size when fully grown. Now don’t get scared – we had demodectic a skin condition that can be treated. It is not catchy to other healthy dogs, people or cats. We do still need some medication and we will soon be following up with the vet. Because of our special needs, we are looking to be adopted locally so our new families can follow-up with the kind staff here at the shelter for our skin care.
If you have the time and are up to the challenge that a pup brings – and all the joy too, please stop by the Cape Ann Animal Aid soon and adopt me/us soon!
