    1. error its the Gortons build and the drying racks are behind it next to your place and above it where taken. maybe a lane between Hammond and Haskel streets or off Mt Pleasant ave looking down.

      1. This is the first partially correct answer. It’s actually not next to our property, it is part of the property my Grandfather Captain Joe bought. He bought it in 1953. Shortly thereafter all these buildings which were built right on East Main Street burned down at the hands of a firebug. This picture must have been taken before that

        1. Its between the playground now and Cripple Cove. Roy Reeds Garage used to be in that area, I think before the playground. Used to bring my dad’s lunch to him sometimes.

  5. This is East Main Street between Captain Joe’s and the play ground. I have never seen a picture of Gortons before it burned down I think in the early 1950’s.I’m I right Geno?

  9. Looks like the hill on E. Main St. across from Capt. Joe’s and Cripple Cove.

    If the guess is correct, of course the Gorton’s buildings have long ago disappeared but if the picture continued to follow E. Main St., heading to the picture’s left, (toward Eastern Point), there was also a vast Gorton’s codfish drying operation (where Bob’s Clam Shack was later built ).

      Gortons… Just some thoughts from a SENIOR SENIOR citizen and not as old as
      Geno….

  20. Clare McDonald Sorry Clare, you are 100% WRONG!!! I moved to East Gloucester in 1942
    and the sign “Gorton’s” was not on the smoke house as shown on the photo. Cripple Cove is
    on the right…

  22. For those looking across to the State Fish Pier, from up above what came to be Capt. Joe’s, that is the Gloucester Ice & Cold Storage building at the Five Pound Island end section of the pier. you can se the island tapering off the end. I believe that building commenced to do business in January, 1939. Notice the elevator shaft tower in the center. Cheers, Bob Ryan
