ITALIAN FILM, OPERA, AND LONG-LOST TV SHOW PREMIERING AT FIESTA
Cinema’s line-up for rainy week is a triple treat for Fiestagoers

While the weather for this year’s St. Peter’s Fiesta may not cooperate, the Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street (atop the St. Peter’s Club) offers special related programming for the five days of the annual Festival.

“Reality,” the acclaimed comedy from “Gomorrah” director Matteo Garrone, is about a Neapolitan fishmonger named Luciano who supplements his modest income by pulling off little scams together with his wife Maria. A likable, entertaining guy, Luciano never misses an opportunity to perform for his customers and countless relatives. One day his family urge him to try out for the reality show “Big Brother,” and in chasing this dream his perception of reality begins to change. The film shows Wednesday the 26th through Saturday the 29th at 7:30pm, andSunday the 30th at 6:30pm.

Barry Sullivan stars as David Scott in a Fiesta-themed episode of “Harbormaster” at Cape Ann Community Cinema on Saturday, June 29th at 2:30pm.

Cinema friend Phil Hopkins of the Rockport-based film preservation outfit Film Chest has uncovered a little-seen episode of a short-lived 1950s TV series called “Harbormaster,” an adventure show which starred Barry Sullivan and Paul Burke, and will present iton Saturday the 29th at 2:30pm. In the episode, entitled “The Sawtucket Festival,” Gloucester and Rockport double as the fictional Scott Island. It was filmed Sunday morning during St. Peter’s Fiesta in 1957, with scenes shot on Washington Street, Our Lady of Good Voyage on Prospect Street, and Bradley Wharf in Rockport. Additionally, Pierce Sears, proprietor of Twin Lights Soda in Rockport, filmed nearly 20 minutes of 8mm color behind-the-scenes footage during the shoot, and will narrate the footage live.

Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi’s famous opera “Nabucco” will have one final encore on Sunday, June 30th at 1:00pm. This version was produced by London’s Royal Opera, and stars legendary tenor Plácido Domingo.

We’ll be rarin’ to go this Thursday as I have gotten a clean bill of health from my veterinarian, and am able to physically keep up with the likes of The “A” Train Orchestra. Featuring the dynamic father/son duo of Rick and Alec Razdan, these two saxophonists are nitroglycerin for your soul. A musical weight reduction machine, these guys are. A lotta hooting’ and a-hollerin’ goin’ on!
Joining the maelstrom will be that loving jazz snob, Mr. John F Hyde, on the keys. He knows all the chords. David “Doc” Vincent will be pounding the skins. I’ll have a pounding headache! But don’t mind me, come see for yourself!

Origami and Photography Workshops

I will be directing an origami workshop for kids at Art Haven and a digital photography workshop at The Hive this month! Here are descriptions of both. For pricing and additional details, see official websites (at the links provided).

Origami for Kids at Art Haven
Thursdays, June 27, July 4, 11, 18, 25, 3:30-5:00PM
“Origami for Kids” will introduce young artists to the world of origami. Besides learning a variety of basic fun models across a variety of themes, we will go over the essentials of origami terminology and symbols involved in reading origami diagrams, so that the children can learn to fold on their own more easily.

Digital Photography Workshop at The Hive
Tuesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23
July 2 and 16, 4-7PM: Before going out to shoot, we will meet at Art Haven, where the instructor will explain key camera features and shooting tips and techniques, including the differences between file formats (with their relative advantages and disadvantages), how to use manual settings, basics of composition, and shooting HDR (High Dynamic Range) photography. We will then go to shoot photographically interesting locations throughout Gloucester, with some suggested themes and perspectives.
July 9 and 23, 4-6PM: We will meet at The Hive to share our favorite photos from the past week and critique each other’s work. Besides providing creative feedback about the shots, the instructor will give instruction on techniques for post-processing using popular software.

2013 Action Inc Annual Meeting and Dinner From Catherine Ryan

Hi Joey,
Here’s are a few snapshots from Action, Inc.’s inspiring annual meeting &
dinner last week at Gloucester House (excellent). Do yourself a favor and
go next year!
Tim Riley, Executive Director for Action, Inc. is the MC for the evening’s
festivities. He gives a great recap for the previous year. The evening
celebrates all that Action does; its entire staff and community, and all
partners and collaborators. This event also honors dedication and
professionalism. It’s so inspiring to be surrounded by people doing
incredible work, that like their jobs, and who are entirely humble-every
employee and each award recipient claimed it wasn’t them that should be up
there, but everyone else with them. Youth and hard work were applauded.
Stevi-Lyn Salafia, an Action Inc Home Health Aide graduate and HomeCare
employee compelled a standing ovation due to her moving testimony. The
other standing ovation of the evening was for Rita Carvalho, Energy
Director for Action, Inc., and her 30 years with Action. She’s in charge of
the utility company funding for energy programs which makes up more than
two-thirds of Action’s overall budget.
We were there with friends Nikki and Pat to be present for awards given in
my mom’s honor, a new addition to Action’s annual line up. We were pleased
to see Eva Agosto-Baez, Jason Burroughs and Jesse Roberts receive the first
three Carol Ryan scholarship awards for their achievements.
We were lucky to sit with Sander Schultz and his family. He’s an EMS
coordinator with Gloucester’s Fire Department. He received a public service
award along with Lt. John McCarthy from the Gloucester Police Dept for the
work they both do with Action as part of the High Risk Task Force – and
just for being generally awesome public servants! His smart and engaging
sons are helping out with the sailing program at the YMCA this summer. (We
had so many connections that I forgot to mention that my father’s dad was a
fire chief).
Special shout out to Action’s Director of Marketing & Planning, Jessica
Benedetto-Unger, for such a great event and her excellent design work.
Check out her agenda and any of the annual report booklets–they’re  unique
and visually dynamic.
