Frank McKinney Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

April 19, 2013

“It ain’t a bad plan to keep still occasionally, even when you know what you’re talking about.”

Frank McKinney (Kin) Hubbard (1868-1930)

Midwestern humorist, cartoonist, and writer known best for his political commentary, Hubbard was a high school dropout who said his goal in life was to own a circus. He worked briefly as a silhouette artist and attended art school for a short time before beginning cartoon work for the Indianapolis News.  For 25 years he drew the acclaimed cartoon “Abe Martin of Brown County” which went into syndication and made him nationally known. Will Rogers cited Hubbard as an influence and called him the greatest humorist of his time.

Breakfast and Soup at Sailor Stan’s

breakfast at sailor stans

My mom, Jean Lefavour, came to visit for a couple of days and got to kick up her heels at the dance at the Rocky Neck Center last night, and have breakfast at Sailor Stan’s this morning.  We had the McStan’s breakfast sandwiches, which were delicious.

Don’t forget, tomorrow from 3:00-5:00 be at Sailor Stan’s for the Love of Soup Best of Cape Ann Soup Competition, with proceeds to benefit the Center at Rocky Neck.  There is still room for a few more soup entries, if you have a great soup you’d like to enter into the competition.  If so, email EJ at khanstudio@comcast.net with your name and type of soup you’re entering.  For soup lovers, this is going to be a special treat, and it is still chilly enough to really enjoy a great variety of soups made by the best local soup makers.   Winner gets a $25 gift certificate to Sailor Stan’s.

Chelsea Berry gives us what we need today

This morning local rising star, Chelsea Berry, posted a video.

Here’s what she says about it:

I woke up this morning and felt the need to share with you how grateful I am for all of the love in this world- because for every one individual who is bent on causing pain and destruction, for every human who goes out into the world with hate in his or her heart, there are literally millions who want the very opposite, who are brave and self-sacrificing, who are kind and caring and want peace for the world– teachers, writers, painters, police officers, musicians, soldiers, friends, family. I love you!! -chelsea

Nothing more to say, but THANK YOU CHELSEA BERRY!

Loyalty!

Loyalty editedThis classic photo comes courtesy of Jean Dugan, one of the parishioners at Holy Family Parish.  I’d love to do a series of photos of each boulder with a person or object that typifies the word, like she has done here with “loyalty”! What could be better than a loyal dog in Dogtown on the “Loyalty” boulder?

I’m Not Feeling My Good Harbor Footbridge Repair Prediction

On the March 30th podcast with Paul Morrison and Paulie Walnuts I set the over/under on when I thought the Good harbor Beach Footbridge would be repaired at the third Saturday of May.  Haven’t seen any work on it yet.

Hope I’m not too far off on the prediction because as of today it looks like the OVER is the better bet.

We will see.

Andreas Thanos Has Some Nice Things To Say About Gloucester People

Hi Joey.  Long time not speak.  But I wanted to share this story with you and possibly your readers.

Gloucester folk…

It is funny. I do not live in Gloucester, never have lived in Gloucester, but I am hooked on this town. Visit it as often as I can, photograph it even more, I often eat and drink in Gloucester, to the point that my wife, children and many friends poke fun at me for it.

Truth be told, I never thought that I would be having such a "Gloucester" experience in Washington D.C. Here’s the story: we flew down to Washington DC this past Wednesday. On Thursday (4/19) we were at the Zoo. Great place. When I say "great" I don’t just mean quality of the exhibits … I also mean size. The kids loved it. We spent the whole morning there. And towards the end of the day we found ourselves on the opposite side of the exit. That is about half an hour worth of walking UPHILL!!!

We were at the Amazonia exhibit, when my wife asked this volunteer for the best way to get to the exit. She saw us all four exhausted and she said: "if you wait 10 minutes, I get off work and I can give you a ride to the entrance." Of course we accepted her gracious offer.

As we were exhausted we took advantage of the wait and sat down for 10 minutes. She comes picks us up and we walk to her car. Guess what folks. She is a Gloucester native. Born, raised and lived in Gloucester until the ’80s. Yes, I feel like an idiot for not asking her for her name, but it was a long day and by then my brain had already called it a day.

We chatted, and I found out that she now lives in Bethesda with her husband, and after she retired a couple of years ago, she started volunteering at the National Zoo. Her father was a Gloucester fire chief. She was in Gloucester last October, so I filled her in on the news I get from Joey’s blog and we started chatting about Gloucester. Of course, the fire chief was also a freemason and since I also am one, the conversation turned to freemasonry. Before we knew it we had reached the gate. We all thanked her and we parted ways. Now, what more can a tired visitor to a large city ask for? A kind-hearted Gloucester native to add, with her good deed, to Gloucester’s pride.

I feel very lucky because all the folks I have met in (or from) Gloucester are GREAT!!!
