I’m very familiar with Niles Pond, having spent five wonderful winters on Eastern Point. I hope the ocean’s onslaught can be stopped. It might be helpful for GMG readers to see how thin the barrier to the ocean is, how the pond abuts a road and homes with no protection from waves, should they come charging in, and how little real estate is between Niles Pond and Gloucester Harbor. Can you imagine the tip of Eastern Point becoming an island?

Take all rocks from Atlantic Rd. that have been there three weeks and rebuild the barrier.

King Canute couldn’t hold back the tide, and climate change is not going to exempt Gloucester from rising seas. I hope city officials are making some long range plans for the inevitable rising waters, which might include a high bridge at the Cut, a bridge to Eastern Point, and a flyover at Grant Circle. Not to mention incentives for people in low-lying places to move to higher ground.
