Burnham House From John Wheeler

Hi Joey, drove past the Burnham house tonight. The light was much different, than the other morning, but the water was just has still.  I happen to have my Canon point and shoot, A630. Those mosquitoes are viscous, Set on auto, and took a few shots, and got back in the car with half of those little buggers eating me alive.

Tomorrow Morning at St. Ann’s – Flowers, Strawberries, Pastries and More!

The Women’s Guild of Holy Family parish is holding a fundraising Plant Sale/Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 2, from 9am-2pm.  The plants include all types: flowers, herbs, veggies, etc., either singly or in planters.  There will also be a General Store selling preserves, pies, cookies & goodies (including some luscious-sounding Italian specialties), as well as strawberry shortcake. Specially made greeting cards with beautiful photos of Gloucester will also be on sale

The event will be held on the Rectory lawn at 60 Prospect Street in Gloucester (or in the Hall next door under St. Ann’s Church if it rains).

Some photos of the plants being prepared:

Fragrant Daylilies

Oftentimes well-meaning hybridizers neglect fragrance, instead favoring a particular color or over-sized blooms. Hemerocallis dumortieri is a species daylily meaning it is exactly as you would find it growing in fields of wildflowers in Manchuria, eastern Russia, Korea, and Japan. The golden yellow-orange flowers have a scent to match their color; the fragrance is a heavenly combination of orange blossoms and honeysuckle.

H. dumortieri  is one of the earliest daylilies to flower, beginning to bloom in May in eastern Massachusetts.  The plants are compact, with narrow, arching leaves and the copper-hued buds open to warm marigold-yellow, star-shaped flowers; the backs of the tepals are washed with reddish brown striations.

Big Mike’s Bikes

Hi Joey!

Wanted to let you know we’re opening our shop up this Monday, June 4. We’re located at 50 Maplewood Ave, Suite 3, next to 7/11 and the new McDonalds (we’re between Miguel’s and the car wash.) Our hours are going to be 10-7 Monday-Friday, with late Thursday hours until 9. Saturdays and Sundays we’ll be open 11-4, with extended hours for pre-registered rental customers to pick up and drop their bikes.

We have an awesome selection of used bicycles – road bikes, vintage cruisers, and mountain bikes, all of which have been tuned up and gone over with a fine-tooth comb – they all come with 30 day warranties. And from now until the end of June, if you buy a used bicycle from us, we’ll give you up to $10 in free accessories!

Big Mike also offers tune-ups for $45, and we are still offering mobile service for an additional $5 each way (so if you don’t have a big car or a bike rack, you can still get that bike fixed!) We do all manners of repairs, especially rehabs of those bikes in the cellar you’ve been ignoring for the last decade. They’re probably still good!
We’ve also got some great accessories here, from training wheels to grips to lights, locks, and helmets. We do rentals, as well! We have a fleet of hybrid/city bikes that are brand new, stylish, and locks and helmets are provided at no additional cost.
Hope to see you soon!

Photos of St. Ann School’s Celebration of the Arts

On Wednesday, St. Ann’s School had it’s Celebration of the Arts – much like what the public schools had a couple of weeks ago, but just for one school.  It included a student concert and an art show.  Here are a few photos of the art – I want to make a video with some clips from the concert too, but that won’t be ready on time for today’s post…

An overview of the gym, where much of the art was on display:

The 8th graders made some creative self portraits:

The show as also about creating art on the spot. Here, students make trading cards to swap with each other.

Aran Patrican Friendship Hockey Skate fundraiser, Friday, June 1

JD Perry writes-

Hi Joe,

Just a quick note to let you know that I got together with a bunch of buddies, including Paul "Vuda" Genovese, Barry Clifford, Rob Bouchie, Jimmy Marr and Rusty Harnish to put together the first annual hockey fund-raising event in memory of Aran Patrican, who tragically passed away from a heart infection this past January, and to benefit his son Thomas Gomes Patrican.  Our goal, because this was put together so quickly, was to get this established in 2012 then build upon it in successive years.  We will also be following this up with a golf outing fundraiser in August.

The schedule for tonight, June 1 is:

6:00 — JP vs. Old Timers
7:00 — Diggers vs. Doc Twombly’s Monday Night Crew
8:00 — Tony Frontiero’s team vs. Doc Twombly’s Monday Night Crew II

Thank you for all your help in getting the good word out to your readers about the strength of our community.  This is simply one example in a long line of so many that you have featured on your blog.

With kind regards,

JD Perry

Rock Sculptures on the Back Shore Photos From Janet Rice

Hi Joey-

I was intrigued by the beauty of these rock sculptures through the morning fog on the Back Shore. In the last photo, does anyone know what James Regan -14- signifies?
