Monthly Archives: July 2011
SATURDAY, JULY 9 STARTING AT 3:00 PM
Join us at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum’s Shipyard on Saturday, July 9, 2011 to view the launching of the Pinky Schooner Ardelle that is being built by Harold A. Burnham, an eleventh generation Essex shipwright. On Labor Day 2010 we celebrated the signing of her keel and the raising of her first frames. It was an exciting day and all who attended had a great time. Harold is now ready to launch the Schooner Ardelle and we will be there to celebrate.
It’s not often that wooden schooners are launched anywhere in this country, and we are fortunate to have in Essex a craftsman who knows how to build a wooden schooner the same way they were built centuries ago. Harold Burnham and a band of volunteers have spent the last 10 months building this vessel. They’ve been outside in snow storms, rain, and blistering heat. On Saturday, July 9th between 6 – 7 pm she will finally hit the water using the time honored, and exciting, Essex side launch. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is one of the best places to view a launch from the H.A. Burnham Boatbuilding yard, and we plan on celebrating. Starting at 3 pm we will have live music from Michael Forney’s Bluegrass Band, Daisy Nell and Captain Stan and the second graders from Essex Elementary will perform songs from “The Stowaway Mouse”, hot dogs and Italian sausages from Kayem, chowder from Woodman’s of Essex , and all kinds of beverages. So, mark your calendars and join us!

That last evenings Night on the Neck on Madfish Wharf rocked the place? Unfortunately, it was so crazy on Madfish Wharf that I never got the chance to get out and check out what was happening on the rest of Rocky Neck, but here are some photos of the happenings at the East End of Rocky Neck. Harpist, Moira Kelly, serenaded attendees with her magical voice and instrument. Then we moved to the rockin accordion, wailing harmonica, jumping guitar and powerful voices of Bird Mancini, who had everyone on the wharf swaying, bopping and dancing. Paco enthralled the crowds at Alma’s Art & Antiques with his accordian playing. The galleries were full, as was the wharf, and everyone had a great time. Mark your calendars now for August NOTN, which will take place on Thursday, August 4. It’s only going to get better.
Launch of the Ardelle
That the schooner Ardelle is ready to launch? The historic launch will take place on Saturday, July 9 at high tide, which is set at about 6:40 p.m., although the launch could happen a little sooner. If you have not witnessed an historic Essex side launch before, it is a sight to be seen! I watched the launch of Fame on video and it was amazing to see her finally let go, hit the water sideways with a big splash, right herself and then glide gracefully like a swan across the water, as she was painstakingly built to do. The adjacent Essex shipbuilding museum will be a great viewing area. The celebration will begin at 3:00 at the Essex Shipbuilding Museum with beer, hotdogs and Woodman’s chowder and music by Michael Forney’s bluegrass band. Photo is of the Isabella launch in 2006. I can’t be there, but I hope someone can get there and capture this historic event and then share it with us on GMG.
Folks are invited to meet Stephanie Vieira and enjoy her Photo Show Reception in the Gallery of the Rockport’s UU church, 4 Cleaves St, Saturday, July 9th, 1-3 PM. The theme is Cape Ann’s natural beauty. Many recall her amazing lightening photo.
Thanks for spreading the word!
Harbor Loop Concert Series begins this week with Jake Pardee and The Super Session Band. This will be the opening act of the season and what a way to start. Jake is one of the most promising musicians around. His persona and musical talents are as great as some of the masters that I have seen. Every time that I get to hear him and his band/bands, I am blown away. I hope that you will come out and enjoy the concert season beginning with this one.
Please note that the show starts at 6:30 and Bradley Royds will perform in the opening set with, Jake Pardee, Vinny Briguglio on bass and Brian Haley on percussion.
Special thanks to Louise Welch for the excellent photography and poster.

4:45AM and I pull in to a local convenience store to get a little sustenance before the work day begins.
There are a total of three people in the convenience store- a guy out in the back corner of the place glued to the keno screen, the clerk that works there and me.
So I find this peanut energy bar in the middle of the store about 7 paces away from the counter. That’s all I needed, just a little something to take the hunger edge off before work started a single energy bar.
I begin to walk toward the counter to pay for my one item, the energy bar and KENO GUY is about 15 paces away. He literally sprints to get to the counter before me and then proceeds to rattle off $150 worth of different lottery bets taking about 5 minutes to get them all in.
Courtesy is not at the top of this degenerates list. My 99 cent single item purchase was obviously not nearly as important as him getting his degenerate gambling tickets.
This is for you dude-
