It is hard. I went through that with my Dad, Joe. He was always such a big, strong tough guy that it was painful to see him so weak and vulnerable. It is one of the pains of growing old — not easy to deal with but an opportunity for us to become “the grownup”. Wishing you well through this, my friend.

Joe, I work as a nurse in long term care and I’m happy to say that most of us that choose that setting do because we love it. I love my “peeps” as I call them. I worry about them if they are sick and am happy when they are happy. I think I speak for most other long term care workers also. Nursing homes aren’t such sad places as people think. Please let me know if you have any questions or want suggestions. Hang in there for your mom!

Your dad reminds me of my dad a lot. Big strong, calloused hands that never want to be idle. It is so incredibly tough. I hope you are doing alright. Thinking of you and your family!

One of my father’s Aussie colloquialisms that always cheered me up when I was down:
“Keep your pecker up, mate.”

That’s a tough one Joey, I went through it with my mom. But as Josie says above, nursing homes can be cool as there are people like Josie working in them. I worked in one eons ago when I thought I wanted to go to med school. While the experience crossed that idea out of my mind (had to work too hard) I always thought it was a great experience with fond memories.

Hang in there Brother! There are some wonderful caring people who work in the Nursing Homes who will take good care of him. I know what your going thru. It’s hard to see the Father you grew up with who was so strong for his family now rely on his Wife and Kids to take care of him. You have a strong family. You will all help each other get through this. Remember the Good Times!
