PORTLAND, Maine – Lobster fishermen are known for bragging about who has the fastest boat or the biggest pickup truck.

Now, some of the top lobster-fishing ports in New England are claiming bragging rights about who has the biggest and best Christmas tree created from lobster traps. As the holiday season gets into full swing, a new lobster trap tree in eastern Maine is stirring the pot.

Gloucester, Mass., started the trap-to-tree tradition 12 years ago, and Rockland, Maine, followed five years later. Both are threatening to be upstaged this year by the small lobstering town of Beals, Maine, which is getting into the act with a monster tree that stands 50 feet tall.

I’ve been hearing from friends all over the country that have read this story.  I guess it was the lead story on the Yahoo news page over night.

Be Kind to Your House and Garden

I must admit I am not the world’s greatest housekeeper. During the warmer months, we manage to keep our home tidy-enough by vacuuming, dusting, and mopping. Very time consuming household chores like washing and ironing curtains and slipcovers, scrubbing walls and woodwork, and polishing floor and furniture are relegated to the furthest corners of my mind. With gardens tucked-in for their winter respite, my thoughts turn to the holiday season and those cozy, nesting passions are reawakened. Cooking for friends and family is my favorite holiday activity, although prior to becoming immersed in the cooking life, I go on a cleaning tear.

Our wooden furniture was looking increasingly neglected, made worse by my mindset that I must go to a store and purchase furniture polish. That only proved frustrating because when shopping at the local grocery and hardware stores I could not find a single polish that provided the consumer with a list of ingredients. Furthermore, I had to ask myself why is it that I felt compelled to purchase furniture polish, especially since we already make so many of our own cleaning products from ingredients readily available from the pantry?

After only a very little experimenting the following is a recipe with which I am quite satisfied.

4 parts canola oil (or olive oil)

2 parts fresh lemon juice

2 parts white distilled vinegar

Optional: a few drops of almond and/or lemon extract

Kent Circle Train!

Kent Circle is all decked out with the big tree from Nova Scotia, lights and decorations in all the other trees, and a train built by Tony at Precision Roofing Services!

A great big kudos to Tony and crew for coming out to appraise our roof the same day we called – and fixing it the next morning! A relief to get that settled before the snow comes. Box of rocks to the squirrel (or squirrels) that had made a big hole up there.

Beaux Arts Ball Roman Orgy Poster

The pictures of this Beaux Arts Ball Roman Orgy Print were sent in by Coby Umstead,  It lists the location of the Beaux Arts Roman Orgy Ball as The Rocky Neck Lobster House which I don’t remember so it is probably pretty old.

Does anyone know the history or year when this Rocky Neck Roman Orgy took place? The Artwork was done by someone named J. Black.

Deb Clarke?  Richard Leonard?  We want details and we want them NOW!
