VIDEO: Laissez les bons temps rouler (Let the good times roll) it’s Mardi Gras!

Well, here in frosty New England, it used to be just another Tuesday in the dead of winter.  But once Henri Smith moved to Gloucester (after Katrina blew is house down — see short bio here) we started celebrating Mardi Gras and now you have plenty of opportunities to celebrate on Cape Ann.  Here are a few:

Eat and drink at Lat43 and Minglewood from 11:30 – close today and 10% of what you spend goes to help send YMCA Teens on their service learning trips to New Orleans and the Navajo Nation.  Plus you can enter a raffle to win cool prizes (including 4 tickets to see Grammy-winner Charles Neville of the Neville Brothers with Henri Smith on Friday at The Larcom Theatre just down the road in Beverly).

Great music tonight all over town and music is the best way to celebrate.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Any time you like you can see Henri Smith and Charles Neville’s 2012 Mardi Gras concert at Minglewood Tavern on Cape Ann TV’s wicked cool streaming site here.

If you’re NOLA homesick, check out the live webcams here.

Maybe — just maybe — if we celebrate Mardi Gras today, we’ll heat up Cape Ann and usher in Spring a tad earlier.  Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Rick Doucette on Easter Morning

If you were in church at 9am on Easter Sunday instead of listening to the radio, your reward is below: listen to a podcast of Aurelia Nelson’s interview, on her North Shore 104.9 show Curtain Up, with YMCA Teen & Camping Services Director, Rick Doucette and Christian O’Donnell, one of the teen leaders who is going on the New Orleans trip during April Vacation.

You can see a complete list of all teens going on the trip here.

It’s not too late to get tickets to Saturday’s Mardi Gras in April concert, that will help pay for the trip, featuring Henri Smith and Charles Neville at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly.  Here’s a video of these two New Orleans greats at Celebrate Gloucester in 2010.

Get tickets here and help local teens pay for their April Vacation service learning trip.

What are your kids doing this April Vacation?

NOLA-AirportFor the fourth year, Gloucester’s Rick Doucette, YMCA Teen & Camping Services director, is taking teens and chaperons from North Shore YMCAs to New Orleans during April Vacation to help people rebuild the City and even the Bayou — they plant trees as well as repair homes.

This trip works wonders on many levels: local teens are immersed in New Orleans culture; they feel the joy of having a profoundly positive impact on other people’s lives; they experience first-hand how working together builds a stronger community.

MardiGras2013_CabotAdMost kids goof off during April vacation.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer in giving kids free-time to explore the world and become themselves.  But something vital touches me when I hear that 47 local teens are going to donate their vacation time to work hard on a construction site or in a swamp so that people 1500 miles away can have a better life.

That’s one reason why Vickie and I are producing a concert next Saturday, April 6, featuring New Orleans natives Henri Smith & Charles Neville to help raise money for this trip.  Last year, we sold out Minglewood Tavern on Mardi Gras, so we decided to take it to another level this year and host it at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly (more about that here).

You can still get tickets and there are even a few VIP packages left.  Get on-line tickets here or go to Gloucester Music.

Here’s a list of the adventurous teens who are going on the trip and the YMCA they belong to.  Let’s honor them by helping to raise money so their parents don’t have to pay for their kids to work during April Vacation.

It’s not just another Tuesday in the dead of winter ~ It’s MARDI GRAS ~

Today is MARDI GRAS.  Check out what’s going on in New Orleans here.

Until four years ago, Mardi Gras in Gloucester was, for most of us, little more than another Tuesday in the dead of Winter.  But when local YMCAs began taking teens to New Orleans on a service learning trip during April vacation to help rebuild the City, the YMCA MARDI GRAS BENEFIT was born.  Last year they sold out Minglewood Tavern for a Mardi Gras concert featuring local New Orleans transplant, Henri Smith with Grammy-winning saxophonist Charles Neville (of the Neville Brothers).

This year, Latitude 43 and Minglewood Tavern are donating 10% of all food and beverage revenue from the entire day and night (starting at 11:30am RIGHT NOW!) to the YMCA trip.  And The Runaround Sound has generously donated their performance at Minglewood Tavern tonight so we can have a Mardi Gras party in snowbound Gloucester!  Here’s The Runaround Sound at the Middle East:

If you’re wondering what happened to the Henri Smith/Charles Neville concert — don’t worry, it’s been rescheduled for April 6 at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly (get tickets here).

Local Music Seen ~ first ever show on location!

On Mardi Gras, Local Music Seen with Allen Estes went to Minglewood to shoot the sold out Mardi Gras on Rogers Street benefit for Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans.  It took some time to edit all the footage and create a good show, but with the help of Cape Ann TV’s master director and editor, Lisa Smith, we finally got it done and the show airs TONIGHT at 6:30pm on Cable Channel 12.

In this video, you’ll see the complete (un-cut) version of Henri’s studio interview with Allen and a very unusual performance of Henri singing Route 66 accompanied by Allen on Guitar and harmonica.  If you want to see the Mardi Gras footage, you’ll have to watch the show (we’ll put this show in the archives soon for those of you who don’t live on Cape Ann or don’t have cable.  You’ll be able to find it here.)

After a nice hot day, you’ll want to cool off tonight at any of the six air-conditioned venues with great live music.  See the cool live music lineup here.

Celebrate “Fat Tuesday” & Help Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans

This year, Mardi Gras happens to be during School Vacation Week, so Lat43, Minglewood  & YMCA have cooked up a grand family party and concert to benefit the Y Teens trip to New Orleans in April.

The fun begins at noon at Latitude 43 with balloons, masks, beads, family style Cajun specials and more.

Then Charles Neville joins Henri Smith and his band New Orleans Friends & Flavours at 7pm at Minglewood.  Concert Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.  If you liked them at Celebrate Gloucester, you love this up close, personal chance to see them again.

10% of all proceeds from concert tickets, food and drink will be donated to the Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans III trip. Plus, the YMCA will sponsor barrel raffles featuring great prizes.
