seARTS invites artists to apply for Partner With an Artist Grants

Partner With an Artist (PWA), seARTS signature artist grant program, provides grants to artists to create new work — in any medium: visual, performing, multimedia art — in partnership with local businesses.  PWA’s focus  is  to  celebrate  the  arts,  strengthen partnerships with the business community, and to promote a vibrant and culturally rich economy on Cape Ann.

The 2014 PWA program will connect with three of Cape Ann’s Cultural Districts: Essex River, Harbortown and Rocky Neck. Jurors will award three $1,500 grants, totaling $4,500, to artists who collaborate with a business in a Cape Ann Cultural District. One artist or project in each of three Cultural Districts will receive a grant. Each completed project will be presented in its Cultural District for the public to experience and enjoy.

Partnership with a business: This is an opportunity for artists and businesses to explore a creative relationship. We seek to fund innovative projects where artists and businesses work together to explore new opportunities only made possible by collaborating.  A business might provide goods, services, or space for a project. 

Creating opportunities for artists: PWA supports artists and encourages creative new work that connects to the local community and that will attract residents and visitors to explore and enjoy the Cultural District.

Grants:  One $1,500 grant will be awarded to one artist in partnership with a business located in each of these three Cultural Districts: Rocky Neck, Harbortown and Essex Cultural Districts.

Please note: Projects in the Rockport Cultural District are not eligible.                                  A grant was awarded in the Rockport Cultural District in 2012.

Phase One:

April – June 2014

Grant applications will be solicited by seARTS for artists collaborating with a business in each of these three Cultural Districts:

Gloucester’s  Rocky  Neck  Cultural  District  

Gloucester’s Harbortown Cultural District

Essex River Cultural District

Phase Two:

June 2014

One grant of $1,500 will be awarded to one artist collaborating with a business in each of these three Cultural Districts:

Gloucester’s  Rocky  Neck  Cultural  District  

Gloucester’s Harbortown Cultural District

Essex River Cultural District

Phase Three:

September-October 2014

Completed projects will be presented in their Cultural Districts.

HOW TO APPLY

If you are a current member of seARTS, there is no fee to apply for this program. To join or renew your membership please visit www.searts.org/wp/joinsupport/. If you wish to apply, but not join seARTS, there is a $25 application fee. 

APPLICATION must include:

1. Cover sheet with contact information: name, street address, email, phone number(s), and names of all artists and business partners involved in the project.

2. Resume or C.V. 

3. $25 application fee for non-member applicants. 

4. One page project description, including a description of how the partnership will work. Identify the business partner(s): company name, street address, contact person, email and phone number(s)

5. Budget including in-kind donations.

6. Work samples:

Visual Art: 10-20 images numbered and titled on CD-ROM readable on Macintosh.  Jpeg files  at  300dpi,  approximately  4”  x  5”.

Media, Performance or Sound Art: 5 minutes on DVD or CD, with numbered media list that corresponds to work samples.

               DEADLINE: All applications must by received no later than June 6.

An interview with our Artist of the Week, E.J. Lefavour

How do you feel about being chosen for the Bass Rocks Art Loan Program?
Very excited.  This opportunity is allowing me to exhibit my work in a venue and to a segment of our population that I may not have been able to reach otherwise (unless they are regulars to Rocky Neck).  It is an honor to be in such great creative company, and I am grateful for the opportunity.

What is your medium or area of creativity?  I am a painter, photographer, writer, illustrator.  Most recently I have been working with the over abundance of wonderful photos I have taken over the past few years and incorporating them into unique, three dimentional photo montages, which people are really enjoying.  I created about 50 of them over the winter, and the series is called "Gloucester: The Grit and the Glory", since most encompass images of rope, chains, rusted hulls of boats, nets and other images from the working seaport aspect of Gloucester, combined with the glory of that industry and of the natural beauty that surrounds us here, as well as the history.
How long have you been an artist?  I have been a working artist since 1991 after leaving the corporate world and making the decision to pursue my art full time.
Where do you get your inspiration?  Anywhere and everywhere around me.
Other than the  Bass Rocks Golf Club, where can we find your works? At my galler(ies) on Rocky Neck. Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck Ave., Gallery 3 from May 15 to October 15, and at my winter gallery, up the stairs at 1 Wonson Street (behind Sailor Stan’s) from October to April.
What else would you like us to know?  I passionately love Cape Ann, Rocky Neck where I now reside year round, Annisquam were I lived in the winter for three seasons, East Gloucester and the Backshore, Eastern Point, paddleboarding, Good Morning Gloucester and all the people associated with it, and all the wonderful people I meet and have met since moving here.  I feel very blessed to be here.

Viewer’s Choice Awards & Recognition Awards as Wearable Arts Group Marks 5th Year at "Celebrate Wearable Art!

For the first time, seARTS honored seven Cape Ann artists and business owners who have contributed in unique ways to the growth of Wearable Art on Cape Ann.  These Cape Ann residents were all honored at Sunday’s "Celebrate Wearable Art!" event held at Bass Rocks Golf Club.

Creative Main Street: Together these three have given nearly 100 years to our community:

Mahri, Manchester. In recognition of 40 years in Business in downtown Manchester and for your dedication to craft, the business of art, and to the community.
Kathie McCarthy, London Ventures, Rockport. In Recognition of 37 years in business in downtown Rockport and for your dedication to artists, the business of art, and to the community.
Beth Williams, Gloucester (20 years in business). In Recognition of 20 years in business in downtown Gloucester and for your dedication to craft, the business of art, and to the community.   
Design & Fashion Leadership: Sigrid Olsen, Mary Hughes & Caro-Gray Bosca (SideStreet Gallery)

Overall Dedication to Wearable Art:  Kate Seidman, (Art Room Boutique) Claire Sanford (Top Dog Studio)

                                                  Viewer’s Choice Awards

After a successful runway show featuring local and invited designers, the audience voted for their favorites in three categories and the results were as follows:

Most Creative Table (designed by exhibiting artists), sponsored by Cape Ann Savings Bank went to Beth Williams, Gloucester, whose table was completely adorned in glass. Honorary Mention in this category went to Marlene Cann, Manchester who created a runway on her table, with purses as the "models."

Favorite Fashion Designer Award, sponsored by Rockport National Bank went to Jennifer Greeke, (Gloucester) for her Harpy Fashion 2011 collection and Honorary Mention to Shayln Webber of Boston who presented the Lichen Collection.

Favorite Runway Artist Presentation, sponsored by Eliason Law Office & Scanzani & Associates – went to Julia Dusman, NYC for three neckpieces from her collection, with Honorary Mention, sponsored by Tom & Maryann Kiely awarded to Beth Williams for her neck art piece called "Electric Murano."

When most people visualize Gloucester, they imagine a fisherman casting his nets, or the white sands of Good Harbor Beach, or the excitement of spotting a whale as it rises from the ocean’s depths. Now, thanks to many active artists and art organizations, Gloucester is on its way to reestablishing its reputation as a center for the arts.

The city made the grade as a popular arts destination in an article appearing in the summer edition of AmericanStyle magazine. Gloucester was ranked third in the small-city category with other cities that had a population below 100,000. The top two spots were taken by Asheville, N.C., and Santa Fe, respectively.

Hi Joey,

I attended the seARTs Art Show at the Bass Rocks Golf Club as your “Rookie Reporter” or “Guest Reporter” — not sure what to call myself. Anyway, the show was wonderful and included the works of over 25 local artists with their pieces displayed throughout the Bass Rock’s event room. There was also a great food spread, cash bar, panel discussion led by educator Joy Dai Buell, raffle and Viewer’s Choice Award. (more to come on who won award).

One of the great things about the show was the pride and passion of the artists, and it showed in their faces and words. Speaking of faces, a few of the photos had sun-glare which sometimes worked out in a strange way. Look at the photo of Martha Wakefield; I think its the third one in the set. If you look into her painting you can see a reflection of her face.

Gloucester is a Top 25 Arts Destination!

Dear seARTS members and friends,

This great news would have not been possible without you. The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) is pleased to announce that Gloucester has been named as a "Top 25 Small City" on its list of top arts destinations across the United States. Small cities are identified as having populations under 100,000 and the nomination for this category was submitted for Gloucester with the intent of highlighting all of Cape Ann in the coverage of the area. seARTS Board Member-elect Kristine Fisher led the campaign with the seARTS Board and art community to get Gloucester on the ballot and then to rally the community and American Style readers to vote! In her September 2010 letter to the editor, Kristine sums it up this way: "One of our goals at seARTs is to raise the level of awareness with the American public about the richness of our very creative community."

Gloucester was voted in #3 just behind Asheville, North Carolina and Santa Fe, New Mexico and was specifically mentioned as an "up and comer."

AmericanStyle mentioned Rocky Neck Art Colony among Gloucester’s main attractions

"Nights on the Neck" was also praised by AmericanStyle

Also noted were the Cape Ann Artisans Tour, the Waterfront Festival and the transformation of the Blackburn Theatre into The Cape Ann Theatre. Congratulations to everyone mentioned, and we’re sure this publicity will be beneficial to you all.

American Style focuses on Art, Craft, Travel and Interior Design and is an excellent resource for artists and art enthusiasts as it publishes the top art events across the country, highlighting select destinations and profiling individual artists.  The idea to pursue this campaign came out of a seARTS strategic planning initiative to look at how great art communities get noticed throughout the country.  "This honor goes a long way toward endorsing the path we are on to support and promote Cape Ann as a beautiful and welcoming place to enjoy the arts — American Style is focused on visual arts, but we are committed to continue to look for and respond to all such opportunities to support all genres of arts and culture on Cape Ann," says seARTS spokesperson, Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco.  "We hope all the arts and cultural groups and artists will benefit from this coverage and leverage this honored place among other great art communities."

seARTS would like to extend special thanks to all our members and friends whose votes helped make this possible.

Gloucester Voted #3 Small Arts City In The Country

I’d like to think that our four posts, the photo I donated and they used in the campaign and the video interview we shot asking folks to vote helped make this happen.

Kristine Fisher placed a call to Anne Robinson who contacted me while she was away on vacation and asked if I could get the publishers of the magazine a decent representative photo for the contest under the wire of the deadline for inclusion of the voting.  They used the photo in the campaign and it is on the website which announced the winners here.

seARTS should be commended for getting the ball rolling.  This is what happens when we work together for the benefit of our community!  HUGE!!!!!  So huge for The Chamber of Commerce, The Destination Marketing Organization and all of those who promote our great city to point to in their marketing campaigns!

A newcomer to the Top 25 list, Gloucester is home to museums, galleries and the oldest working art colony in the U.S.

Cape Ann, a thriving arts and cultural destination, lies just 30 miles north of Boston along one of the prettiest stretches of coastline in all of Massachusetts. Billed as one of the last great unspoiled places, its harbors, lighthouses, beaches, coves and coastline have been attracting artists almost from its beginnings in 1623.

Cape Ann’s four communities include Rockport, Essex, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Gloucester, America’s oldest seaport. “Art is vital to the lifeblood of Gloucester. There are many beautiful places with seashores and harbors but the combination of arts, culture, and industry are rarely so integrated and integral to the life of a city. It makes Gloucester a very unique place that celebrates art in a way that most cities can’t,” says resident and AmericanStyle reader Barbara Silberman. Gloucester is home to a large population of artists, many of whom display their work in Rocky Neck Art Colony galleries and studios. You can visit the Rocky Neck Gallery or enjoy open studios and entertainment during Nights on the Neck, on the first Thursday of the month from June to October.


WHAT’S NEW?

This year an iconic red brick building on Gloucester’s Main Street, known to locals as “The Blackburn,” was transformed into The Cape Ann, also known as “The Annie.” The building was revitalized to promote the arts in the community and serves as a venue for performance and visual display. Located within The Annie is “The Art Parlour,” an expansive gallery space that allows local artists to show their work free of charge.

UP AND COMING

The annual Cape Ann Artisans’ Studio Tour takes place June 18-19 along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport, allowing visitors to meet more than 15 professional artists and see their work where it was created.

The Annual Gloucester Waterfront Festival will showcase the juried work of over 175 artists and craftsmen from throughout the U.S. in the city’s historic Fort Park on Aug. 20-21.

The way Abby has broken down such an incredible amount of fisheries statistics into an easily digestible visual/artistic/educational/fun presentation with everything you need to know about where Gloucester’s fishing industry has been with data and visuals bringing you right up to the present is nothing short of astounding.

This is an uncomplicated 101 guidebook to Gloucester’s fishing industry which has distilled all the data and will give any person a good basic understanding of what is going on around the Gloucester waterfront.  The way it is broken down there is info for people 7 years old to 70 and it is all incredibly interesting.  Every person who considers themselves a real “Gloucesterite” NEEDS to come see this exhibit.

seARTS kicks off it signature artists grant program, Partner With an Artist 2011, with a discussion and preview of grant-winning artists’ new work created with business and community partners.
