Woodcarving With David Calvo

February 25, 2013

Ask David Calvo if he thinks woodcarving is a dying art and he’ll cut through the suggestion like a bandsaw through birch. By Andrew Conway- photograph by Joel Laino

“I’ve taught students from every state, as well as Canada and Mexico,” he says, referring to his ever-growing network of passionate craftsmen and women who come to his renowned woodcarving and sculpture studio and school in Gloucester to learn the ancient art for themselves.

North Shore Magazine BONS- HOW BOUT SUPPORTING SOME OF OUR LOCAL FAVORITES?

Til the end of the month voting is open for the North Shore Magazine’s BONS Awards in many different local categories.

image

Just as I would only have you vote for GMG for best Blog if you thought we are truly worthy I would suggest you vote for some of our other locals which in my mind are worthy of votes.  you can click on any of the highlighted links to go to that voting page for that category.  If you don’t see your favorite you can nominate them anyway.

We have three local Bakeries under the bread category which I could make a case for any one of them- Sclafanis, Virgilios and Alexandra’s Bread Co.

Then there is the Bakery sweets category in which you could make a case for Nichols or Turtle Alley.

We have a bunch of  different restaurants which in my mind are as good as you’ll find anywhere on the planet.

There are places you might get your lobsters or seafood to consider voting for.

There is the greatest brewery on the planet right here in Gloucester Cape Ann Brewing which deserves your vote IMO.

The Best BARBQUE.  I mean is anyone in their right mind going to argue with Smokin Jims under the best BarBQue?  Please!

Coffee Shop- Lone Gull, Pleasant Street, Cape Ann Coffee Take your pick.

Farmer’s Market- Cape Ann Farmer’s Market by a landslide.

Mexican- If Tacos Lupita doesn’t take this home there should be an investigation- huge portions, fresh, cheap prices.

Pizza- My favorite is Sebastians but I know there are a lot of Delaney’s, Captain Hooks and Maria’s fans out there.

Sushi- Lat 43

Romantic- The Rudder comes to mind as the most in the summer.

General Excellence- Helloooo Duckworth’s Bistro

Al Fresco Dining- If there’s a more beautiful view than that of the Lobster Pool in Rockport at sunset I haven’t seen it.  Bonus points for being able to brown bag your beer and wine.

Arts and Crafts- Duh social media savvy and always open Coveted Yarn

Again I stress only vote for folks you think deserve to win.  There are many more worthy local businesses but as I’m completely slammed here at work on Memorial day weekend forgive me if I left out some important ones as I’m just trying to remind folks to vote for their favorites..

North Shore Magazine Hosting the Incoherent Ramblings of Yours Truly

It’s true, editor Jack Morris has invited me to post on theNorth Shore Magazine website so check out my first post over there-

http://nshoremag.com/world-competitive-eating-north-shore-style/

I hope to bring some fresh flavor to North Shore Magazine, not that it needs it.  If you’ve seen an issue you know it’s high quality through and through.

Hopefully I don’t ruin the brand with my sometimes off color humor, atrocious spelling and hope for the best punctuation.  Hey it’s a 50/50 shot if I put the apostrophe before or after the s isn’t it?

Jared Charney Shoot For North Shore Magazine

This morning Jared Charney came down to take some pictures for an upcoming story about GMG for North Shore Magazine.  Jared is a freelance photographer who has done work for Yankee Magazine,North Shore Magazine and other publications.

Local Newspapers In The Digital Age

Had a conversation with Jack Morris, the editor of North Shore Magazine yesterday about blogging and the newspaper business.  Jack worked for Fox as their web manager for a while and now is the man at North Shore Magazine.  Look for one of my photos in the next edition.

We spoke for a while about newspapers and what way it seems they are evolving in the digital age- agreeing that the newspapers that ignore or do  not embrace social online networking to it’s fullest extent are doomed to fail.

People in conversations weekly tell me that they love GMG and that I should start an alternative to the Times.  Firstly I am flattered by the suggestion but in reality what we do on GMG is nothing like what goes into putting out a daily newspaper and the local newspapers are crucial to keep going and support.

See, we get to choose  fun stuff and things that matter to us to put into GMG.  We don’t have to report on the puss.  We don’t have to attend tax classification hearings or talk about the police or fire department negotiations with the city.  We don’t have to do the obituaries or stories about Marshalls coming to town.  We do stuff because we love it or we think you our readers will love it.  It’s similar but a different animal what we do and what the newspaper does.

My grammar sucks and if it weren’t for spellcheck my spelling really sucks.  I make mistakes and sometimes don’t bother to correct them because I know my point got across.  If the local paper makes spelling or grammar mistakes people get all up in their shit.

I guess if you are a paid journalist you should be able to use proper punctuation but I never claimed to be a journalist.  I’m a blogger and my job as a blogger is to keep you entertained and to fill my creative needs. I think for the most part we accomplish that here at GMG but please don’t confuse us for a newspaper or take our local newspapers for granted.  They keep honest politicians honest and report on the stuff that would slip between the cracks because bloggers would never bother with the little stories and the police notes and all the comprehensive stuff that makes up our newspapers.

Best Of North Shore Award For Best Place To Buy Lobster- Captain Joe and Sons

Well the People Have Voted and Captain Joe and Sons took home the Readers Choice Award for Best Place To Buy Lobster On The North Shore!  WOOT!

I  had promoted on these pages that people vote for their favorite local business in the North Shore Magazine annual award nomination process but never once did I lobby for anyone to vote for us for anything.  You can see the post where I asked people to vote for their favorite local restaurant, bag shop, brewery, and many many other listings here- that May 29,2009 GMG post

Thanks so much to anyone who voted for us!
