Start New Years Eve by helping to send Rockport High Band, Chorus & Orchestra students on a concert tour of Ireland and take home a rock star’s autograph

New Years Rockport Eve has so much music that trying to decide what to see will become your first decision of the 2014.  Check out the complete up-to-date music schedule here (this lists more shows than you’ll find on their website).

But before you even look at the schedule, check out this video & press release from Noreen Vincent about the amazing silent auction featuring instruments & sheet music autographed by Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Bob Dylan & the Eagles — all to support a program led by RHS Orchestra Director and local music star, Nathan Cohen:

Kick off New Year’s Eve with a Music and Silent Auction Fundraiser at the Shalin Liu Performance Center, Tuesday, December 31st from 3:30pm – 5:00pm.

There will be music of many genres, including a lively session of traditional Irish music performed by the Rockport High School students, faculty members and surprise guests. The Cape Ann Contra Dance Band will be joining the event for a live dance.

Silent auction & raffle items include instruments autographed by Taylor Swift and Paul McCartney, sheet music and albums autographed by Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, and The Eagles, autographed drawings by Seth McFarland and Charles Schultz, circus lessons, lobsters, Celtics tickets, a summer weekend rental in Rockport, a pair of concert tickets at the Shalin Liu Center, a a three-day trip to Paris, and much more. The celebration will end at 5:00 p.m. – in time for Rockport’s New Year’s Rockport Eve festivities, which begin at 6:00 p.m.

Proceeds will help fund the Rockport High School Band, Chorus, and Orchestra’s Concert Tour of Ireland in April of 2014. The students will travel to Ireland to engage in the musical culture, study with some of Ireland’s most renowned musicians, and to perform at some of the country’s finest venues. Students will visit Limerick, Galway, Dublin, and Cork, and will work both with classical musicians and traditional Irish musicians and dancers. The fundraising efforts are critical in keeping the cost of participating in this tour affordable to all students.

Here’s a list of the live music (dozens of choices).  The whole shebang goes from 6pm to midnight and is one of the best entertainment values of the year.  You can download a map and complete schedule (in table format) here.  Plus if the weather cooperates (which it just might) you can see the moon, Jupiter and its moons, and galaxies so far away they’ll convince you that you really are as insignificant as you thought — a great way to begin the new year.  The Zip Line Kid and I are still talking about how much fun we had looking through the telescopes set up by the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club at Dock Sq.

Last year we were too late to get in to see Cape Ann Big band at Shalin Liu.  We won’t make that mistake this year.  Here’s a sample of what we missed:

Plenty of opportunities to get into the party spirit tonight (see complete live music listings here).  Might be a good time to check out  Mike O’Connell and his excellent band at Minglewood starting at 9pm.

All your shopping done? If not, NYRE Buttons could save your butt

OK, you’ve had Ladies Night and Men’s Night, but you’re still not done.  Or if you’re like me you haven’t started yet.  We went to Men’s night last night and what did I do?  Saw the Two Buddies Show at Alchemy, bought cheese, pate and olives at The Cave (I know I was supposed to by buying gifts, but I was hungry), talked with lots of people I don’t see every day and then it was late and Vickie and John (who had been Christmas shopping the whole time) wanted to go.  Oh well, guess I’ll go back to plan A, which is to start my shopping at noon on Christmas Eve.  Then I’m focused.

But wait!  You don’t have to procrastinate like I do.  You can get New Years Rockport Eve buttons for everybody still on your list.  It really is one of the best entertainment values you will ever get on Cape Ann with dozens of artists performing all over Rockport from 6 to midnight — and beyond (see live music schedule here).  Plus magic, puppetry, story telling, fortune telling, face painting, balloon making and lots more for kids and parents.

Here’s where you can get buttons:

In Gloucester:

OK, now you’re done . . . and you can relax and enjoy all the great music this weekend.  You’ve got over 30 choices between now and Sunday.  See the full live music schedule here.

If you can’t find something to do on Cape Ann this weekend, you’ve lost it

33 live music shows to choose from tonight through Sunday (see weekend live music lineup here).  Oops, make that 32 (unless you already have tickets to Overboard’s sold out show at Old Sloop tomorrow night).    Here’s a taste of what you’re missing if you don’t:

But wait!  They’re coming back to Rockport as part of New Year’s Rockport Eve’s huge lineup of excellent entertainment.  See the NYRE live music lineup here.

Tonight’s music lineup is killer and includes KBMG @ Dog Bar featuring Dave Brown on guitar.  Just in case you forgot who Gloucester’s greatest guitarist is, here they are at Celebrate Gloucester 2010 (with Nelson Bragg  on percussion):

FREE Acoustic Music Festival in Rockport on Sunday

David Cutler, Rockport’s acoustic music impresario (yes, I used that word), has been putting together this event for 33 years! While it’s usually held in Rockport’s beautiful Millbrook Meadow, this year the event is being held at the Rockport Legion Band’s bandstand on Back Beach. This is a great time to hang out in lovely Rockport and hear some good local music while enjoying food from Claire Franklin of New Year’s Rockport Eve. For more on that, read on. And click HERE to head over to the Rockport Acoustic Music Festival to discover the lineup and other information.

Here’s a letter from Claire, who is coming off of a really tough year and is looking for volunteers for the weekend. Claire puts on a huge event, Rockport New Year’s Eve, every single year (this weekend’s food tent sales serve as a fundraiser for the New Year’s Eve event). It is a major effort and everyone loves this event, so if you can help her out that would be great. We’re going to be in Maine this weekend and will miss all the action, but I wish I could be there alongside Claire. Everyone at the Acoustic Music Festival is in happy mood, listening to music while eating Claire’s hot dogs, hamburgers and more, so working in the food booth is a great way to be part of the event. You can contact Claire at her email address: claire.nyre@comcast.net to sign up for a volunteer slot or contribute in some other way.

From Claire:

Hello Everyone,

As most of you know, I lost my husband to lung cancer last January right after New Year’s Eve.  It has been a long road back to once again try to do the things I always have done in the past without him along side me.  Starting with this coming weekend’s Rockport’s 33rd Annual Rockport Acoustic Music Festival.  Each summer New Year’s Rockport Eve supplies the Food Tent for the festival.  We are again this year!

New Year’s Rockport Eve is looking for volunteers to help serve & cook on Sunday, August 12th from noon to 6pm.  Also, I would love a few helpers to set up from 10am – 12 noon and clean up from 6 – 7 pm.  This event has moved from Millbrook Meadow to the Legion at Back Beach this year.

Every fundraiser that I put on throughout the year requires that I beg people to help me.  I love putting on the New Year’s Eve program for the town of Rockport, but the begging for help is getting a bit harder.  Please come forward to volunteer to benefit such a wonderful event that I would love to continue year after year.  It takes about $34,000.00 to put on this event and button sales does not support this.  Fund raising is a must!  If you can just do one hour, I will take it or two or three.  Just answer this email and volunteer and please pass this on to everyone on your email list.

I am always looking for Baked goods to sell, also.  Brownies, cookies etc. that can be bagged and sold for 50 cents.

Thanks,

Claire

The End is Near

The end of 2010, that is.  Even though I’m spending Christmas far from Cape Ann, I’m dreaming of a White Christmas in New England, and of course already planning for the last night of 2010 at New Year’s Rockport Eve, the annual party (including a ball drop in Dock Square) in downtown Rockport.  Claire Franklin, the one-woman whirlwind who founded and organizes the event, works hard all year to bring all of us this event, offering entertainment of all kinds – magicians, puppet shows, and every genre of music you can think of.

New Year’s Rockport Eve

From Michael O’Leary-
Dear Friends in Celtic Music,
As this year ends, I want to thank everyone for their interest in and support of live Celtic, and other, music.  I and my musician friends wouldn’t have the privilege and joy of playing to live audiences without it.  I hope the New Year brings you much wonderful new music–live or otherwise!
We’ll be singing out the old year and singing in the new on Thursday night.  Details below.
