Next Monday afternoon at the Community House I will be presenting my “Pollinator Garden” program to the Rockport Garden Club. I am looking forward to meeting with this great group of civic-minded gardeners.  I see their signs all around town at the various gardens they maintain and they do a simply outstanding job! The program begins at 1:15 and the doors open to the public at 1:00.

The Pollinator Garden

Following the rhythm of the seasons, celebrated landscape designer Kim Smith presents a stunning slide show and lecture demonstrating how to create a welcoming haven for bees, birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Native plants and examples of organic and architectural features will be discussed based on their value to particular vertebrates and invertebrates.

Please visit the Programs Page of visit my website for a complete list of program offerings.

CREATIVE AWARENESS: PUBLIC ART INSTALLATIONS ON UTILITARIAN SURFACES New York Water Towers- Vancouver Silos- Gloucester Streets

Cat Ryan submits-

SELECTION OF TEMPORARY PUBLIC ART ON EXHIBIT NOW

See just a few of many artist’s ideas through temporary public art installations on utilitarian surfaces. Different purpose, message and style.

Os Gemeos, artists and brothers, monumental silos in Vancouver.

The Water Tank Project in New York City; overtime 100 will be wrapped.

Justin Desilva’s crosswalks and James Owen Calderwood’s FISH NET in Gloucester.

UPDATE: James Owen Calderwood

James Owen Calderwood’s FISH NET was recognized as an example of one of MA extraordinary public spaces. This summer Calderwood has re-painted and expanded the mural, completing his award. Professional photographer Linimberg Oliveira of Medford was in downtown Gloucester August for a photo shoot on Parsons Street. He described being inspired by Gloucester: the heady mix of historic buildings and architecture juxtaposed with modern art, specifically James Calderwood’s public street mural, FISH NET. You can see more of Calderwood’s work on view at the group show Sting! 18 Landscapes: Between Tradition & Imagination, at the Beehive in Boston. Calderwood works with lines in a variety of media. His welded aluminum sculpture Star was selected for the 2014 SculptureNow. The historic estate of Edith Wharton, the Mount, in Lenox, MA, is the current site for SculptureNow exhibition of large outdoor sculpture, which continues through October 31, 2014. REMINDER: The sculpture exhibit is a quick 5 minute drive to the Berkshire Museum’s Butterfly exhibit featuring work by Gloucester’s multi-talented artist, Kim Smith.

UPDATE: Justin Desilva

Justin lives and works North of Boston. People have asked: Yes. Portuguese background. (Desilva’s grandfather emigrated from the Azores. He immigrated to the US, eventually working for a plastic injection mold company. An Uncle was a fisherman). His creative crosswalks make vivid connections based on Gloucester and stories from the HarborWalk. This installation is temporary and in progress. One of the next crosswalks will be on Harbor Loop and another on the east end of Main Street. He’ll reverse the crosswalks when the installation closes.  For a walking tour of the crosswalks Click for Google map for Justin Desilva crosswalk locations . Justin’s art is inspired by Jane Jacobs and her book the Death and Life of Great American Cities: “I was moved by her attention to detail of human interaction, and the idea that neighborhoods and cities are safest when they’re walkable.”

Justin Desilva’s art installation, With Every Street there’s a Story, is the second of three new works of art commissioned by the Committee for the Arts on behalf of the City of Gloucester for the 2013 HarborWalk Public Art Challenge, with funding from the Seaport Advisory Council. Calderwood’s was the first.

block party logo

Here in Gloucester, both installations are on view during the not-to-miss 2014 Essex National Heritage Trails and Sails weekends (Sept 19-21 and 26-28), which overlap with the September 20 Gloucester Block Party Saturday. MEET THE ARTISTS: they’ll be in town September 20th for these events.  Stop by the block party for special coloring page activity sheets!trails

Destination Gloucester….celebrity run in.

As if some steamers and a good drink at Halibut Point with a great friend isn’t excellent enough….last night I happened across a wonderful party of about 20 diners out to celebrate a wedding of dear friends.  While we didn’t chat long, the happiness exuding from their large table was palpable and I was so happy to have had the chance to meet them.

The fact that I met them at all stemmed from the fact that some of the younger-than-me wait staff recognized one of the guests as a very handsome actor. Doing my due diligence as a GMG contributor (who happened to be wearing my GMG baseball hat…go figure) I introduced myself and got a bit of the scoop.

Yanic Triesdale, a Canadian actor, also adored in the United States as Michael on The Gilmore Girls in addition to other series and mini-series, is in town to celebrate the destination wedding of dear friends Isabelle Lafleche and very soon-to-be-husband, Patrice.  While, maybe not as recognizable in person to those dining at Halibut, Isabelle is the fantastic, and incredibly beautiful, author of the novels J’Adore New York and J’Adore Paris.  I can’t get to Barnes and Nobles fast enough.  She also happens, as it turns out, to be good friends with GMG’s own, Kim Smith.

They were completely charming and talking with them made me smile.  I was, for the record, incredibly happy to learn that my own dear friend, while recognizing that I was mildly intruding on a rehearsal dinner of sorts, bought the table a couple of bottles of wine in thanks for humoring me.

Excellent examples of friendship on both sides of my iPhone last night.

Cheers to friendship….mine, Kim’s, everyone’s.  Cheers to Isabelle and Patrice on a glorious wedding and a lifetime of happiness. How special that they chose Rockport, of all places, to seal the deal.

Yesterday afternoon and evening while weeding at the HarborWalk butterfly gardens I encountered a gorgeous male Summer Azure butterfly, lots of friendly Red Admirals, and myriad bees. If you are there at the HarborWalk tonight watching the The Wizard of Oz, stroll through the gardens and have a look at these beautiful native wildflowers in bloom today!Veronicastrum virginicum Bee Gloucester Harbor Walk Butterfly Gardens ©Kim Smith 2014

You may notice some bare spots in the garden, which will soon be filled! Hose spigots were just installed this week at the gardens and we now have an improved way to water!!!!! Up to this point, for the past several years, Lenny Linquata has graciously allowed the city to hook up hoses and fill watering cans at his restaurant spigot. Butterflies! at the Berkshire Museum

Berkshire Museum ©Kim Smith 2014 Sam JaffeMy friend Sam Jaffe talking about caterpillars.

Friday night I had the joy to attend the fabulous new exhibit at the Berkshire Museum titled “Butterflies!” The galleries are filled with hands on art and science activities, contemporary butterfly sculpture, artifacts from the museum’s collections, live caterpillars, and mixed media of photography and film, including an audio track from Dr. Lincoln Brower discussing what happens within a chrysalis. And, as part of the exhibit, one of the galleries houses a large butterfly pavilion with over 200 live tropical butterflies from around the world!

Blue Morpho Butterfly ©Kim Smith 2014Underwings of the Blue Morpho Butterfly from the live butterfly pavillion.

“Butterflies” was curated by Maria Mingalone, the museum’s director of interpretation, and she deftly and beautifully combines science, art, and nature in an exhibit that is sure to inspire and delight the very youngest to the most senior of citizens, and every age in between! Butterflies Berkshire Museum ©Kim Smith 2014 copy The opening was very joyful and buoyant—I most certainly felt that way and, judging from the expressions on visitor’s faces, wasn’t alone. I am convinced that butterflies bring out the happy in people! Kim Smith film Berkshire Museum Butterflies ©Kim Smith 2014JPG The audience for my short film “Flight of the Monarchs”—I watched as many people watched my film many times over, despite the case that because the galleries were so crowded you couldn’t hear the beautiful music. I think there were several thousand people at the event.

The music that I set my film to is “Fields of Blue,” written  and performed by Jesse Cook. I wrote the artist and sent him a copy of my film and the most amazing thing happened where, within only the few day whirlwind to create this little film, we were granted permission to use his song!!!!!!!!

My film opens with a clip of a Monarch flying in front of Eastern Point Lighthouse (you can see our Lighthouse in the above photo). Most of the footage that I used for the movie was of butterflies in flight, shot on Cape Ann, and the audience was stunned at how beautiful the migration is through Gloucester. That opening clip of the Lighthouse and the Monarch took several days to capture the exact shot that I wanted. Butterflies don’t take direction! If you have never been to the Berkshire Museum, their website description reads as follows: “The Berkshire Museum offers a unique array of exhibitions, activities, and attractions for visitors of all ages. From fine art and ancient objects to fossils; from an aquarium of native and exotic creatures to the Feigenbaum Hall of Innovation, we are your community museum: a place where everyone, from toddlers to elders, can learn, play, explore, innovate, be engaged and inspired.”

I arrived early, before “Butterflies” opened its door, and explored the galleries. It’s really a very engaging museum and especially while the exhibit is running, would be a wonderfully fun and interesting day trip with children.

For the month of April I, along with  Noah Quist, Willowdale’s new Director of Businesss Development, are featured in the Willowdale newsletter’s Meet the Team. Sarah Boucher, Willowdale’s Senior Sales and Marketing Director asked several questions of me for the feature. The following answer is in response to a question about creating welcoming habitat gardens, “My passion for creating butterfly and habitat gardens developed initially because I think butterflies and songbirds are exquisitely beautiful creatures and I wanted to draw these wild things to the gardens that I was designing. Butterflies and songbirds bring a garden to life with their grace in movement and fascinating life stories. The more that I learn, the greater the need becomes apparent for sharing information about the connection between native wildflowers and the web of life that they support.”
