Just when you thought it was safe to crawl into a hole for the winter

What’s this?  More music?  More fun?  I thought this was the start of the slow season.  Nope.  The truth is, folks, that there’s no such thing as a “slow season” in GTown any longer — at least not when it comes to music and the arts.  There are plenty of restaurants that stay open year round, plus lots of other year-round venues for music and the arts.

And we’re seeing an expansion of music venues even after summer is over.  Catch 22 is expanding their music offerings to Tuesday – Saturday and  Seaport Grille has music tomorrow (a new player in Wednesday night music).

Sure we might relish the idea of less traffic downtown and fewer tourists walking the streets, but that wears off quick.  This is what we want, right?  A thriving music scene all year long.

And this is precisely the time of year when we can  support the steadfast restaurants and venues who stay open all year long (see them here – along with their live music lineup for this week).  The best way to convince them that they’re doing the right thing is to go there.

Oh, it gets better.  Perhaps you caught the Gloucester Times story about Endicott (see here).  Nancy Gaines’ insightful article focuses on the educational value that Endicott will provide Gloucester residents and only hints at how Endicott students will help revitalize our City, breathing new life into arts, culture, science, music — all in the “off season”.  Becoming a college town is likely to be the best thing that has happened to Gloucester this century.  Let’s welcome Endicott and the students, parents, vitality and just plain fun they are bringing to our City.

Making Italian Donuts With Sista Felicia and Nephew BJ At The Gloucester Daily Times Website

These are considered a special treat by Felicia Ciaramitaro Mohan’s family, especially her son BJ, who helps make this recipe. Every Sunday, especially on religious holidays such as Easter Sunday, Grandfather Joe would make these special donuts “for us (seven Grandchildren) on Sunday mornings. This is one of many treats he and my grandmother Felicia would make for Sunday coffee time after Sunday Mass.”
The special ingredient in these homemade donuts is ricotta cheese. It is mixed into the batter and makes for a very moist and tasty round donut, which is rolled into powdered sugar right after frying them in oil.
“My Grandfather passed away when I was in high school. When my twins were born many years later, I remember counting the months till they could have table food so I could make them to enjoy on Sunday mornings and Holiday mornings just as I did growing up.”
“My kids enjoy them just as much as my cousins bother & I did. My daughter Amanda knows how to make the batter, BJ is a professional donut powdered and my husband is defiantly the best at eating them! With our busy schedules traveling with our daughter Amanda for tennis, Sunday mornings as a family are tough to fit in. In spite of this, everyone knows, including my nieces Eloise & Madeline, that when TeTe, Uncle Barry, BJ & Amanda are home on a Sunday donuts are being made while the sauce and meatballs are cooking for our family dinner!”
You may want to try them for a special day such as Easter or at any time you want to make a special treat.

Rosa Rugosa is a carefree rose which will grow in salty conditions, shade, full sun, and poor soil so long as it’s well-drained. Its fruits and flower petals can be used to make jelly.

Julie Geary’s Lamb Shank Video

Since Julie Geary has been in the catering business that her mother started out of their home in Magnolia she has learned many tricks and techniques for getting the most flavor from her food – and when she wants to the most bang for the buck. She loves to share that knowledge with people and does so here with this delicious recipe for cooking a lamb shank that is so tender the meat will fall off of the bone. The secret is to braise, cook in the proper liquids and slowly simmer on the stove or in the oven for a few hours. It is a good recipe for a long, cold, rainy afternoon. Watch her do it here.

We were honored to have a media slideshow from Kate Glass as one of the participants in the Downtown Gloucester Block Party media presentations last Saturday night.  Recently Kate won an award from the Associated Press News Executive Association for a photo of Anne-Margaret Ferrante and her mom moments after she won the election for 5th Essex District state representative.

How long have you lived in Gloucester?
Sadly, I don’t live in Gloucester, but I’m trying to convince my husband that we should move here! I’ve worked in Gloucester for a little over a year though.

What is your favorite season In Gloucester?
Fall. The weather is still beautiful and easier to enjoy without all the summer traffic.

Do you have any secret outdoor spots in Gloucester where you go to “get away”?

I don’t think these spots are much of a secret, but I do like Rafe’s Chasm in Magnolia. I also love Folly Cove.

What is your favorite pizza joint in Gloucester?

Andiamos had the best pizza. I was very upset when I found out they closed.

What is your favorite sub shop in Gloucester?
I don’t eat too many subs, but for sandwiches and salads I’d have to say Willow Rest. Gotta be careful there though, because everything looks good!

What place would you go for a romantic dinner in Gloucester?

I liked the food and look of the Franklin when I shot it for the Cape Ann Magazine.

What is your favorite bar in Gloucester?

I like the margaritas at Jalapenos. I am also a fan of the beer at Cape Ann Brewing.

What is your favorite breakfast joint in Gloucester?
Jim’s Bagels, though I am dying to try Sugar Magnolias.

What is your favorite local event in Gloucester?
The Farmers Market and music. The block parties are good too. I never really get to enjoy Fiesta because I’m too busy running around looking for photos!

In the summer do you prefer the beach or to be on a boat?

Definitely the beach. (I get seasick)

Who is your favorite local artist?

That’s a tough one. There’s too many good ones. Jon Conant and the work he’s bringing into the Hive in Rockport is a nice addition to the area.

Good Harbor

Who has the best chowder in town?
Halibut Point

Do you prefer haddock chowder or clam chowder?
Clam.

What were your thoughts on The Downtown Block Parties last year?
Love the outdoor dining. Gloucester needs more of that!

What is your favorite local band?

While I have seen some of the local bands, I can’t say I’ve seen enough to answer this one. I do love how all the musicians here show up and play at each other’s gigs.

Old Home of The Gloucester Times

This photo I believe was taken around 1924.

It is the old home of the Gloucester Times which I believe sat in the building that houses Passports restaurant.

On the bottom floor it looks like there was Sullivan’s Drug Store in the exact spot where Passports operates.
