Wanna Talk About Class? Ryan and Wood Distillery Has It In Spades

I knew the Dodgeball rosters would get filled quickly and we would round out the 20 team brackets in a day or so.

Even though Ryan and Wood didn’t get a team submitted this year Bobby Ryan emailed to tell me that he still wanted to help sponsor the 2013 GMG/Farm Bar and Grill Bikini Speedo Dodgeball Tournament at Camp Spindrift.

That’s what you call being a community organization.  that’s what you call class.

Ryan and Wood Beauport Vodka, Knockabout Gin, Folly Cove Rum.  If you’re not drinking the highest quality spirits made locally or anywhere you’re doing a major disservice to your liver.

2012 GMG Old Cuban Cigar Co and Ryan and Wood Folly Cove Rum Sail Aboard The Thomas Lannon Tickets are One Sale NOW Call Kay at 978-281-6634

Anyone that went on our cruise last year knows it was one of the best nights of the summer.  The tickets are $35 and include Two Old Cuban Cigar Co cigars which are valued around $10 each, Folly Cove Rum drinks from Ryan and Wood AND a sail aboard the Thomas E Lannon.  All together it’s like a $85 value that you get for only $35.  but you know what?  Even if it was $85 I bet everyone that went last year would buy tickets again because it was THAT great a night.

So if you are one of my peeps, I want you aboard so we can hang smoking the finest cigars, drinking the finest rum and sailing aboard the most beautiful boat in all of Gloucester Harbor, the Thomas E Lannon.

Tickets are not going to last.  Please if you know you are one of the people I like to hang with call Kay at the Lannon ticket office and reserve your spot so we can chillax together.

Video- 2011 September GMG Old Cuban Cigar and Folly Cove Rum Sail Aboard The Thomas E Lannon

Filmed With My Cheapo $79 Kodak Playsport Zx3 and using the Kayalu nClamp.

Some points about taking video-

The more steady you can hold your camera, the more pleasing the resulting video will be.  One way to accomplish this is holding your camera very steady.  You need to be very conscious of framing your shot properly and keeping the camera steady.  the much easier way is to use a tripod, or mount.  Using a mount or tripod there is no camera shake and your results will look immeasurably better than if you try to hand hold the camera.

Obviously carrying a huge tripod around can be cumbersome and you all know my feelings on being able to keep your camera gear on you to be able to capture the shots as they happen.  So many times a tripod is not going to be the answer.

The manfrotto modopocket which screws right into the universal camera mount and folds flush with the bottom of my camera is my number one camera accessory that I feel can help any photographer achieve much better results, especially with poor light (with good light photography is a snap, you just point and shoot and you don’t have to worry about camera shake because the time the lens will be open is so much shorter).

But for this application I used the kayalu nClamp with the toughbar extension.  Literally I screwed the Kodak Playsport Zx3 onto the Toughbar and clamped it onto a bolt that was attached to the mast, framed the shot and pressed record.  In this way I could sit back and enjoy the company on the boat and we got a nice video capturing the scene.

Once again I can’t extend enough thanks to Paul Giacalone from Old Cuban Cigar Company, Bobby Ryan of Ryan and Woods distillers and of course The Ellis’ and their crew aboard Gloucester’s most beautiful ship, The Thomas E Lannon.

I never want to miss one of these cigar and rum cruises for the rest of my life.  the setting aboard the Lannon with the friendliest crew and my hero Captain Tom Ellis, the company, the spirits and of course the cigars- just like the first one, I didn’t want this night to end.

Anyone who took pictures be sure to send them in and I’ll post ‘em for you (better yet upload them to a Flickr set and I’ll run your pics as a slideshow)

Joey…….
Had a Great time In Gloucester. As well as the Cigar & Rum Cruise. The sunset (moon rise) cruise was a totally remarkable view of Gloucester. I love Good Harbor Beach as I do every year. The lobsters Mike Collins and I picked up from you were fabulous. Keep up the tremendous work on GMG. I’ll see you again next year

Video Behind Scenes

Another visit to Ryan and Wood Distilleries…..and a recipe to go with it!

How can you not have a good time when visiting a distillery, huh?  You get intoxicated in the best possible way walking in the door by the aromas and it is fantastic.  Bob Ryan gave me the rundown on how to make rum from the molasses to the barreling and it was again so interesting.  So here is the recipe I came up with to use his delicious product in my kitchen for more than just making a cocktail–which is currently on my agenda!

Folly Cove Rum Marinated Pork Tenderloin with Pineapple Rum Salsa

For the pork:

1 large navel orange, zested and juiced
1/2 cup Folly Cove Rum
1/3 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey or agave nectar
2 teaspoons cumin
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or more to taste)
1 1 to 1 1/4 pound pork tenderloin, cleaned

In large zip top bag combine orange juice and zest, Folly Cove Rum, soy sauce, honey, cumin, garlic and cayenne pepper.  Drop in pork tenderloin and allow to marinate at least 6 hours but preferably over night.

When ready to cook, preheat oven to 350 degrees or outdoor grill to medium high.  Remove pork from marinade and pat dry.   If grilling indoors, preheat grill pan to nearly smoking.  Sear pork on all sides and finish in oven for 11-15 minutes until cooked to medium.  If cooking on an outside gas grill, sear both sides and the reduce the heat to cook the pork completely to the desired temperature.

Allow to rest 10 minutes before slicing in to 1/2″ rounds.  Top with Rum Pineapple Salsa and enjoy!

For the Rum Pineapple Salsa:

2 cups diced fresh pineapple
2 tablespoons diced onion
1/2 chop diced red bell pepper
3 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1-2 tablespoons agave nectar or honey
2 tablespoons Folly Cove Rum
1/2 to 1 teaspoon hot sauce (to taste)
Salt & pepper to taste

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl.  Refrigerate until ready to serve with Folly Cove Rum marinated pork.

Enjoy!  Serves 2-3 people

Ryan and Wood Release Premium Folly Cove Rum Video

Manuel Simoes Captures my interview with Bobby Ryan at The Ryan and Wood Distillery in Historic Gloucester Massachusetts.

Oh and BTW- that is not a fart about 3/4 of the way through the video. It’s the Bean giving me a zerbert on my neck while I’m conducting this very professional interview.

I wonder where she gets her sense of humor?

:)

As Bobby Ryan said to me in our tour “We like to name our vessels after significant Gloucester vessels“.  Here you see what Bobby was talking about with the two fermentation tanks named Adventure and Thomas E Lannon.
