Big week in Gloucester for Brian Alex

Brian Alex on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes

You know that Gloucester’s music scene is going places when we can attract a star like Entrain’s Brian Alex three times in the same week!

Tonight (WED) he’ll be the featured guest on the Cape Ann TV show “Local Music Seen with Allen Estes” airing at 6:30pm.  And if you miss it, you can watch the whole show on-line here.

Tomorrow, you can see him live at The Rhumb Line 8:30pm with Dave Sag, John Keegan, John Hyde, Mark Earley and Ephraim Lowell.

Then on Saturday, he’ll be fronting the ENTRAIN benefit for Gloucester’s UU Church Meetinghouse at 8pm (save $7.25 if you get tickets here).  It’s a good week to get a taste of Brian’s extraordinary and versatile talent!

Video: Dave Sag on Local Music Seen with Allen Estes this week — special guest Will Hunt

Dave Sag is on a roll.  One way to gauge the quality of a musician is by the guests who perform with him and it just seems like some of the best musicians in the area are showing up as Dave Sag’s guests lately (see list here).  So we figured it was time to reprise the Local Music Seen show we premiered a couple of years ago featuring Dave Sag.  The show will air tonight at 6:30 on Cape Ann TV Channel 12, and on Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.

In addition to being a talented, versatile musician, Dave Sag is an entertaining story teller and his stories shine in this show, as you can tell from this clip, where Dave asks our sound guy, Will Hunt (who did a did an excellent job programming the Block Party music and managing sound on all 3 stages this past Saturday) to join him on Sax — and Will, who’s equally versatile and always a good sport, agrees.  Check out the dynamic, on-stage spontaneity in this number:

Just in case you don’t live in Gloucester and can’t get Channel 12, you can watch the entire show on-line now thanks to Cape Ann TV’s new technology!  Click here to watch the show.

Rare chance to see Dennis Brennan (one of Boston’s best rockers) with Dave Sag @ Rhumb Line tonight

Dennis Brennan @ gimmesound GiveBack Benefit
TT The Bears, October 2009

The fact that Dennis Brennan isn’t a huge star proves that music business executives are clueless.  Dennis was one of the first Boston area artists to make a gimmesound profile when we launched 4 years ago this month (see it here).  The first song he uploaded was Sugar Falls (listen here) and when we heard it, the whole office jumped up and danced and all agreed,  “He’s gotta be in our very first benefit show!”  (still producing benefits)

The next October, we produced our first GiveBack benefit show at TT’s in Cambridge featuring Dennis Brennan and other Boston stars.  Here’s what James Buhrendorf had to say about Dennis at that show, “Dennis Brennan was the cool driving force of the night. Fedora, coat, black jeans and boots, slinging an upside down lefty acoustic sluiced through a Fender amp…after 40 years on the Boston/Cambridge music scene, Young Mr. Brennan still tears it up. We’re talking genuine gritty alt-roots rockers, and tear out your heart sweetness and sorrows.  … ” (see the full article here).

Here’s a short video featuring all the performers that night: Elle Gallo, Dennis Brennan, Sarah Rabdau and the Elastic Waste Band (members of Morphine with Jeremy Lyons):

Don’t miss your chance to see Dennis Brennan tonight at Rhumb Line with Dave Sag, Matt Stubbs and Chris Rivelli.  Show starts at 8pm.

Weekend starts earlier tonight

Well maybe all our talk about taking kids out to hear great music didn’t fall on deaf ears (pun intended).  Plus there’s another bonus: the fact that some shows start early means you can get to more shows in one evening.

Weekend starts tonight with Just Like Newman at 7pm at Shea’s Riverside in Essex.

Dave Sag has been starting his Rhumb Line Blues Party at 8 instead of 9 for a couple of weeks now.  This week he’s got Steve Chagaris & Justin Quinn Band.  Check out this video from a few years ago:

Plus there are three excellent 9pm shows.  See the complete live music schedule here.

Love Christmas music or not, lots of great live music choices in Gloucester tonight

Those of you who like Christmas music are in luck tonight.  Fly Amero is signing Christmas songs with his brother J.B. and Allen Estes at the Rhumbline tonight starting at 8pm.

Then catch the Local Music Seen with Allen Estes 2011 Christmas Special at 11pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 (originally aired last year) featuring Dan King, Daisy Nell & Capt. Stan, Ann Marie, Bradley Royds, Inge Berge, Chelsea Berry, Dave Sag, Courtney Reid and Allen’s son Dylan Estes.  Here’s a video of many of the performers singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town. (see more air times here)

Of course, there’s lots of other excellent music in town (not necessarily Christmas — see full schedule here), including Dennis Monagle with Marina Evans, Joe Cardoza and Dave Brown at Minglewood Tavern starting at 9pm.

What to do on the 5th of July

The 4th is yesterday, but Summer has just begun and the Gloucester music scene is in full swing.  Start out at Nights on the Neck at 5pm with Mamadou Diop.  Just in case you’ve never seen him, check out the video below:

Then there’s great music all night long with Special Guest Evan Goodrow joining Dave Sag’s Blues Party at the Rhumb Line at 9:30.  See sample of Dave Sag below:

Make a night of it!  See the full live music lineup here.

Sneak Peek Inside the Chelsea Berry Band Rehearsal

This video gives FOB’s the very first look at Chelsea’s new band as they rehearse for their June 28 debut opening for Chris Isaak at North Shore Music Theatre (see Sunday Globe story about it here).

Sun is back and tonight there’s more live music in Gloucester than any other Monday this year.  If you’re free right now, head on down to the Rose Baker Senior Center and catch Dave Sag and his Good Old Salty Jazz Band!   See full live music lineup here.

North Shore Jazz Project One Year Anniversary Party At Chianti

Caroline Forrester writes-

Good evening! I wanted to share with you a musical video from the North Shore Jazz Project as we celebrated our 1st anniversary at Chianti’s in Beverly.

Last Sunday, we had an anniversary show featuring Gid Loring, Dave Sag, Mark Earley (Roomful of Blues), Dave Mattacks, Frank Hadley, John Hicks. We had some incredible musicians sit in: including our youngest player Brian King, a 16 year old trumpet player who is a junior at Masconomet. He knocked everyone’s socks off.

Please take a moment to watch the above video that Henry Ferrini produced. It is only 7 minutes long- — and if you need to skip ahead- go to 5.23 to see Brian King. Gid Loring is 83 and so great to watch– to see him exchange notes with 16 yr old Brian- this IS what the North Shore Jazz Project is all about.

We are at www.northshorejazzproject.org with many events coming up. We have an educational clinic- free- at Chiantis in December. Danny Harrington- saxophonist extraordinaire, Berklee Professor and board member will be running that program.

We are so appreciative of any attention you can bring us as our mission is to bring musical education to the forefront and give musicians an environment where performance can flourish. In one year- we have had over 10 concerts- including Joe Lovano. I hope you can come and see for yourself how dedicated we are to keeping this American tradition alive.

Hoping all is well with you and wishing you a happy and thankful thanksgiving!

Jay Aptt with Dave Sag – Rhumb Line Thursday

From Dave Sag-

In continuation of our new meat series, we are proud to present Mr. Popin Jay Appt, erstwhile plumbing magnate and glitarist non parieil.Y’all know Jay from his machinations with the Mikey O. Band; breathing new life into the septum of Fishtown and wrecking your vestibular nerve in the process. We’re glad to have him; It’s his first time , so please be gentle.
Adding to the pyrexia will be L’il Steevie Chaggaris, on Skins and symbols, one of our stalwarts, as well as Greg T.,on catarrh and myselph, on base.I’ve just started a rumour that Mikey O. is gonna drop his apron and come on down for a bit, to show us how it’s done. If so ,I’m gonna wear my white shoes. Why not be the first on your block to rock yer socks with some blues in a box?

And, for those of you in the joint-replacement crowd, next Monday from 1 to 3 pm at the Rose Baker Senior Center, I’ll be exercising my rights with the Good Old Salty Jazz Band. This is a fun outfit…and I’m not the oldest member!….for a change. Anyway, there’s dancing and coffee and someone always brings cookies or something, so c’mon down. It’s just like an A.A. meeting without the guilt and speeches!

Tonight at the Rhumb Line!

From Dave Sag-

Live! At the Rhumb Line, this week only, something new and different: “modern” blues. Ha-Ha-Ha. Actually, I would like to introduce you-all to Mr. Evan Goudreau, young lion, glitarist, and big man on the hippocampus these days. He’s been around and plays all over the east coast, singin’ and playin’ his way to electronic stardom. He’s  all over the place on the web; czech him out!
Also joining us for the first time is Andrew Jones, on drummbs. First heard him playing with Mark Earley, so you know he’s gotta be good. Of course, Greg T. will be there with his hat and smokin’ catarrh, and myself, as well. Doo come.

Tonight at the Rhumb Line-

From Dave Sag:
Hey! It’s gonna warm up! In keeping up  with jet stream programming, we’re proud to present our very own tootin’ Torquemada of the tenor: Mr. Andrew Clark. One of our favorites, he’ll be bringing his own brand of mayhem to our stage once again. Educator, soloist and vocalist, this guy can do it all. A snappy dresser, too.
Backing him up, we have Mr. Benny Benson, on drummbs. No slouch, he. This is a great sounding outfit.Of course, Greg T. will be there as well as myself. I might even bring the biggg bass. Do come.

From Sag-

Well, we got her: Boston treasure and Octomom of the blues, Ms. Diane Blue. She’ll be bringin’ her own sweet brand of blues and R&B to our stage this week as we continue our march toward perfection series. If you haven’t seen this woman perform, you should push that icepick in a little further, maybe it’ll help. She’s a  montrous talent that should not be fooled with.
Backing up over her  will be guitarist and good buddy Roberto Mortituri, or something like that (Ave, Caesar!) Last time here, I couldn’t stop staring at his shoes( Sorry, Mike), Alligator or catfish skin or something… and also, Roger Brocklebank , on skins, he of Madhouse fame, as well as Greg T. on catarrh, and myself, on base. Music at the Cape Ann Museum on Fridays at Noon

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present free noontime concerts in the Museum’s Sculpture Garden on Fridays during the month of August. Performers for the remainder of the month will be James White on August 21 and The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra on August 28.

The Pleasant Street Tea Company and Lark Fine Foods have generously donated beverages and cookies for these events. In the event of rain, the performances will take place inside the Museum.

James White, now a resident of Gloucester, is originally from England. He has been writing music since the 1970s, playing and performing in both Europe and New England as well as doing session work with his first instrument, the electric violin.

The Aspidistra Drawing Room Orchestra is based in London, England. The orchestra specializes in the type of light classical music from the late nineteenth, early twentieth century that is usually referred to as Palm Court Music or Salon Music. The ensemble consists of a string quartet, piano, flute and oboe.

Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, which promotes excellence, access, education and diversity in the arts, humanities and interpretive sciences, in order to improve the quality of life for all Massachusetts residents and to contribute to the economic vitality of our communities.

The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Museum is closed during the month of February, on Mondays, and on major holidays. Admission is $8.00 adults, $6.00 Cape Ann residents, seniors and students. Children under 12 and Museum members are free. The Museum is wheelchair accessible. For more information please call: (978) 283-0455. Additional information can be found online at http://www.capeannmuseum.org.
