Well, anybody who thinks Cape Ann’s music scene is only hot during tourist season should look at this weekend’s lineup (see full weekend music schedule here).
That’s the good news. The bad news is that you just can’t see every good show this weekend. You’re gonna have to choose. Maybe I can help. It just so happens that I’ve recently interviewed two people who are performing this weekend at Shalin Liu.
Here’s my interview with Brian Gore, whose International Guitar Night performs tonight at 8PM.
And here’s my interview with Kendrick Oliver, director of the New Life Jazz Orchestra, who’s performing tomorrow at 8PM.
And don’t forget Mark Berger & Ride with dramatic photographs from out west as the backdrop for this Old Sloop concert tomorrow.
And it’s Crazy Moon’s final weekend at Rocky Neck Art Colony.
Plus some of Cape Ann’s favorites all over town, including Linda Amero, Charlee Bianchini & Dave Brown, Runaround, Dan King, Michael O’Leary, Mari Martin, Allen Estes & Orville Giddings — and there’s the Community Sing-a-long in Celebration of Pete Seeger at the Lanesville Community Center tonight. WOW! Is your head spinning? Click here for some help choosing.
On Jan 14 — for the benefit of Joey, Paul M. & RD — Bruce Springsteen settled the matter on Jimmy Fallon. Here’s what he said in response to a question posted on Twitter:
This was, of course, the same night as the “Gov. Christie Traffic Jam” bit which is at least as funny:
Bruce couldn’t make it to the Rhumbline tonight, but Dan King is filling in for him with special guests Charlee Bianchini & Bill Gleason at 6pm — and that will be an excellent show. Check out the full weekend live music schedule here.
If you were at the Cape Ann Solstice concert, you heard Charlee Bianchini’s gorgeous version of Mark Erelli’s soulful “Snowed In.” You may also remember Charlee say she was lucky enough to see him live — not many people are so lucky. But you could be if you get your tix now to see him with Barnstar! at Old Sloop before they sell out!
Check out this video to see what I mean . . .
What a gift it is to live in a community full of tremendously talented musicians, who can bring world-class music to one of Gloucester’s most treasured spaces.
All the performers were at the top of their game last night and, based on their level of talent, they could have brought giant egos with them.
But they chose to leave their egos at the door and collaborate at the highest level of professionalism in order to lift a packed house at Gloucester’s UU Church to a level of musical joy that many said they hadn’t felt in years.
Thanks to all the sponsors, volunteers and Cape Ann TV crew who helped to bring The Cape Ann Winter Solstice Concert to life.
Thanks, most of all, to everyone who came out to support our local music treasures and help restore the Meetinghouse so it can become a premier listening venue for dozens of major musical events every year.
Based on last night’s success, it’s safe to say we’ll be doing this again and again and again. Stay tuned …
You can’t get advanced tickets online any more, but you can still go the Gloucester UU Church and get tickets at the door ($25 for all ages). Box office opens at 4pm. Doors open at 7. Concert starts at 7:30. There’s plenty of free parking at the Church and nearby (Trinity Church parking lot and Library lot off School St. are both plowed) so come on down and celebrate the longest night of the year with some of Cape Ann’s finest musicians while you help to restore one of Gloucester’s most treasured buildings!
Curtain Up host Aurelia Nelson
We’ve pointed out before that North Shore 104.9 host Aurelia Nelson frequently features local talent on her show, “Curtain Up” (see examples here). This Sunday 12/22 she pulls out all the stops with her hyper-local Christmas show featuring some of Cape Ann’s top talent performing a Christmas repertoire that rivals what you’d hear on a big city radio show!
You’ll hear Dan King’s wonderful new Christmas song “Handmade With Love (Present)” featuring Charlee Bianchini, “I wish I Could Fly” written by Allen Estes & Fly Amero, new songs by Bryan Alex, John Stevens and Angie Miller (Beverly’s own Idol finalist) and selections by the Beantown Swing Orchestra.
We know you’ll be at Gloucester’s UU Church on Saturday night, where you can see many of these stars LIVE — and we promise the show will be over in plenty of time for you to get a good night’s sleep and get up by 9am for Curtain Up on North Shore 104.9.
Then on Sunday night at 7pm, you can hear a real radio play, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” This is a rare experience you simply can’t get any other way. Build a fire, sit together as a family in the living room, tune the radio to 104.9, chill in a comfy chair, close your eyes and lose yourself in this classic story. When’s the last time you heard a radio play?
Take a break from all this madness and enjoy great music with friends & family Saturday December 21st. Get your tickets now so you can relax.
If you’re not convinced this will be the concert of the season, check out Gail McCarthy’s piece in today’s Gloucester Daily Times.

Many thanks to Dan King, KBMG and friends! Here is a taste of this year’s Present. We hope to see you Thursday night for Ladies’ Night!
Amid the flood of info that washes over us every day, it’s often refreshing to get a reminder of some cool stuff we might have missed. Here goes:
- Espressos has jumped into the live music scene. Check out their lineup.
- Live music starts at 6 tonight and 11:30 am tomorrow (see schedule here). Plenty of good shows you can take your kids to all over Cape Ann.
- Seasonal wine and beer licenses kick in on Monday (April Fools Day — seems fitting somehow). So The Cave, which is usually closed Mondays is having a wine tasting 4-6pm (more about that here).
- You can help support Cressy Beach Restoration at the CPA meeting on Tuesday (4/2) 6pm at City Hall First Floor Council Conference Room (more on that here).
Here’s a very good music video by rising star Brendan James. You can see him at Crowell Chapel tonight with guests Brian Jarvis, Charlee Bianchini & Dave Brown. Tickets & details here.

Charlee Bianchini is Allen Estes‘ guest on Local Music Seen this week. Charlee’s distinctive voice and thoughtful lyrics capture the studio audience and will capture you too. Plus you will hear another one of Allen’s excellent new songs.
The show airs on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 on Wednesday 2/13 at 6:30pm. Then again on Friday at 1:30pm and Sunday at 6pm.
After you see the show, check out the great live music available in Gloucester.
How lucky we are to live in a town so full of musical talent!

How are things going down at the Dock?? Let’s get coffee soon and catch up!
I’m wondering if you could do me a huge favor. I’m trying to sell a couple bikes, and was wondering if you could put an announcement on GMG for me? I’m not sure you do that sort of thing, but I thought I’d ask.
I’m including the pictures of them, and you can tell people if they’re interested then send me an email: email@example.com
Greatly Appreciative! and let me know when you’re free. I should be around this week if you want to hit up the Gull!
The green bike is only a few years old, and in absolutely perfect condition–not a spot of rust on it. I’m trying to sell that one for $300, but am flexible. The red bike is a bit older but still rides very well. I’ll sell that at $200, again flexible.
