2014 Fishtown Horribles Announcement

    image

Hey Joe, my name is John Linquata and I’m a member of the Fishtown Horribles Parade Committee.
We have been working all year long to put out another fun and entertaining parade for this great city. This year we are honoring Ray Smith of Smith Hardware who was a life long sponsor of the parade as parade marshall. We have Gloucester’s own 2014 Special Olympic Gold metal winner Danny Williamson as Grand Marshall Danny brought home the gold in the shot put and bronze in the 100 and 200 meter relay. We will also recognize and congratulate our two scholarship winners Samantha Ryder and Malya McLean.
Of course some of our favorite marching bands will be back and a few new ones that we are really excited to see perform here. As always we will have all the amazing floats that the wonderful people of Gloucester put together for the city to enjoy (which people can pre-register for at www.fishtownhorribles.org ). Of corse the Horribles our namesake who we are always looking for more of and clearly the Cape Ann YMCA would like to see more of too, because they donated two weeks at camp spindrift, one for a boy and one for a girl, anyone who would like to help collect money this year as a horrible will get an extra shot at the week at camp. And as always the parade line up is first come first serve which means the earlier you show up the closer to the front you are, Horribles are encouraged to show up around 5 pm and the parade starts promptly at 6 pm.
If anyone would like to volunteer we never turn down help we will be at the High School Auto shop Wednesday after 6 pm decorating and setting up and on Thursday from noon on, there is always plenty to do. And if anyone has any questions all of our contact information can be found on our website again that is http://www.fishtownhorribles.org and don’t forget to like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/fishtownhorriblesparade and tag us in your photos new or old we love to see them and others do too. We can’t wait to see everyone there have a happy and safe 3rd and 4th.
Thanks again Joe, anything we can do to get more people involved only makes the parade better for everyone, so we really appreciate your help. Have a great day.
John Linquata

2012 Burnham’s Field Community Garden Announcement for GMG

Gina Briguglio writes-

Hello Community Gardeners!
Spring is upon us! March 20th marks the official first day of the 2012 spring season and I am sure you are as excited as I am about our 2nd year out at Burnham’s Field. All this sunshine and 70+ degree weather should have you pondering your planting plan :)
I need to review my notes from the last meeting but I do believe we have one, possibly 2 plots, open in the garden. In fairness to the many folks who are currently interested, we will hold a ‘lottery’ to determine who will be joining our current gardeners. If you or someone you know is interested please email or message me the name and contact details so I can toss any new names into the ‘hat.’ My personal email is ginabeantown@gmail.com. Deadline of April 1st on submissions.
If you haven’t turned in your dues for the new season ($25 per plot) please mail or drop a check by 57 Prospect Street, Apt 2, Gloucester MA 01930. Checks should be made out to "Burnham’s Field Community Garden." If you have submitted a check that has yet to be cashed…I will be opening a BFCG checking account at Cape Ann Savings Bank this week – sorry for the delay.
Thanks so much and looking forward to seeing all of your smiling faces very soon!

Household Hazardous Waste Day Saturday September 25th

The City of Gloucester will be holding its annual Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, September 25, 2010 from 9AM-12 Noon at the Department of Public Works, (DPW) 28 Poplar Street.

The event, which will be held rain or shine, provides residents with the opportunity to dispose of hazardous materials in an environmentally responsible manner. There is no charge for Gloucester residents to dispose of hazardous waste up to a maximum of 25 pounds or 25 gallons and anything over this amount will require a payment to Clean Harbors. An additional 10 gallons or 10 pounds will be $28, anything over that will be $45 . Contractors may not use Household Hazardous Waste Day to dispose of materials. We will accept a limited number (12) of non-residents who will be responsible to pay Clean Harbors directly for the material they bring.

Clean Harbors Environmental Services will be on site to accept oil-based paints (no latex paint), varnishes, pesticides, gasoline, and other household hazardous chemicals. In addition, residents may dispose of mercury-containing waste, including car batteries, thermometers, thermostats, and fluorescent lamps at no cost. For this Saturday only we will not be accepting tires or scrap metal.

To ensure safety, please adhere to the following handling procedures: leave materials in original labeled containers; tighten caps and lids; place containers in sturdy upright boxes rather than in garbage bags; avoid smoking while handling hazardous materials. Most importantly, do not mix chemicals.
