Friday is your last Chance to “Celebrate Gloucester” in the BIG TENT on the water

If you haven’t yet been to a concert at Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion, now is the time — and if you’ve been to a concert in this gorgeous waterfront venue, you know what I’m talking about.

It’s the perfect summer music experience — ask anybody who was at the packed James Montgomery show last Friday.

This Friday (8/29) we’re bringing in the same concert stage and state-of-the-art sound & lights for Henri Smith New Orleans Friends & Flavours to kick off Schooner Festival weekend — get tickets here.

There’s a wonderful parallel between James Montgomery and Henri Smith.  Both bandleaders are major talents, they love to surround themselves with the best players available and both are committed to furthering their musical traditions by nurturing young talent.

Henri is bringing Grammy-winning saxophonist and flautist Amadee Castenell (who appeared in the HBO hit series Treme) along with Berklee professor Herman Hampton and top New England Conservatory trombonist Eric Stilwell — 3 generations of top musicians on the same stage!

And Mile Marker One will have a full bar along with perfect summer food: Lobster Rolls, BBQ Chicken Sandwich, Sausage/Peppers/Onions and of course Clam Chowda!

Don’t let summer pass you by without dancing a second line with Henri and his stellar band at the largest waterfront tent in Gloucester!  Don’t wait until it sells out.  GET TICKETS NOW!

New Live Henri Smith CD to be released at Celebrate Gloucester Aug 29

HenriPoster_600When Henri Smith brings New Orleans Friends & Flavours, featuring Grammy-winner Amadee Castenell to Cape Ann Marina’s Waterfront Pavilion on August 29, he’ll be helping to raise money for the Cape Ann YMCA — and he’ll release his new live CD recorded at The Larcom Theatre last March.

This will be Henri’s first live CD and it features stellar guests, including Grammy-winners Charles Neville and Amadee Castenell along with young, rising stars — all brought together by Henri Smith, one of the country’s premier band leaders.

Recorded and mixed by Bill Winn (whose award-winning credits include Whitney Houston and Herbie Hancock among many others), this CD is destined to become a classic — and you can get yours signed at the concert.

Music connections revolving around Gloucester

Allen Estes‘ Cable TV show Local Music Seen features Brian King tonight at 6:30pm.  On the show, Brian sings his hit Cold Rain, which was recorded by Irma Thomas, the “Soul Queen of New Orleans” (listen here).   You can see Brian at Giuseppe’s tonight.

Irma Thomas appears in the HBO TV hit Treme (season 3 premieres this Sunday night).  And in the Treme video below, you can see Irma Thomas with Amadee Castenell in the blue suit on sax right next to her (that’s Dave Bartholomew, who lived down the street from Henri Smith, on trumpet next to Amadee)

Amadee performs with Henri Smith here in Gloucester and was in Henri’s band when he opened for Aaron Neville on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre (see him in the photo below, on the right next to Danny Heath on Trombone)

Before he went on stage that night, Aaron Neville had been reviewing mixes from his upcoming album, My True Story with his wife, Sarah, who directed the video, below, that was released exactly 1 week ago today:

Now back to Gloucester:
Veteran blues man, Bill Gleason is Fly’s guest tonight at the Rhumb Line.  He’s also one of the featured performers at the Lanesville Music Festival on Saturday followed by KBMG with Fly’s brother J.B. as a special guest.

And Pete Lindberg, who plays drums on Marina Evans‘ new EP (listen here) is performing his own songs at the Lanesville Music Festival at 5:30 (see festival schedule here)

Confused yet?  Sort it all out with the full local live music lineup here.

New Orleans Fun ~ more than New England usually allows

Let’s face it folks, we, in New England, are known for being kinda stuffy, right?  Isn’t that why we’ve welcomed Henri Smith to Gloucester?  Isn’t that why we do our level best to keep him here year after year?  Yes, he’s a fine musician.  Yes, most of his friends are all top talent too.  Yes, he infuses Gloucester will all kinds of culture we’ve never before experienced.  But let’s be honest.  He’s fun!  And so are his super-talented friends.  Just look at this video:

Don’t these guys just look like they’re having the time of their lives?  We need more of that — and we’re going to get it on June 3o when Henri gathers the most talented, fun-loving New Orleans musicians you can see north of the bayou at North Shore Music Theatre to open for the iconic for Aaron Neville (get tickets here).  Henri’s band will include:

Stanton Davis on Trumpet
Amadee Castenell (from HBO’s Treme) on Sax, Flute and Vocals
Herman Hampton (Berklee professor) on Bass
Daniel Heath on Trombone and vocals
Les Lumley (from Ghetto Mysticism) on percussion.
Charles Burchell  (from New England Conservatory) on Drums
Ben on Piano (you know him)
PLUS A SURPRISE GUEST!

Now for some fun tonight (see full music lineup here) we have to mention one of Gloucester’s most talented and fun musicians with an acerbic wit, Inge Berge, will be at the Dog Bar with his trio.  See what we mean by wit and fun in the video below:

Amadee Castenell from HBO’s hit series Treme Joins Henri Smith on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre

Yesterday we featured Stanton Davis and Les Lumley from Ghetto Mysticism.  Today it’s Amadee Castenell, who has recorded and toured with Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint — with whom he appears in the HBO hit series Treme (Amadee is to Irma Thomason’s left in this video) and many others.  Amadee joins Henri Smith’s band on sax & flute June 30 opening for Aaron Neville at North Shore Music Theatre (get tickets here).  At about 3 minutes into the video below you get an idea of Amadee’s virtuosity — starts out slow and subtle, then wows the audience!

Now that it’s summer, there’s more to do on a Wednesday night in Gloucester.  Lots of good people playing (see full music lineup here), but we just have to mention the first solo appearance by Dylan Estes (Allen’s son) at Giuseppe’s tonight.  He’ll start about 8:30.  We’ll be there with John, the Zip Line Kid.
