Oh what a weekend

The Schooner Festival is definitely my favorite.  From starting on Friday on The Lannon and ending on the Lady Jillian for the parade of sail.  Just terrific.

Photos of the USCGC Eagle arriving today in Gloucester Harbor ~ It was tremendously beautiful to see the Eagle moving through the Harbor. I am looking forward to seeing this majestic cutter under full sail!

The Eagle is open to the public for free tours today, Saturday, the 30th, from 10am to 7pm.

From the Coast Guard website: Built at the Blohm + Voss Shipyard in Hamburg, Germany in 1936, and commissioned as Horst Wessel, Eagle is one of three sail-training ships operated by the pre-World War II German navy. At the close of the war, the ship was taken as a war reparation by the U.S., re-commissioned as the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle and sailed to New London, Connecticut, which has been its homeport ever since. Eagle has offered generations of Coast Guard Academy cadets, and more recently officer candidates, an unparalleled leadership experience at sea.

Read more about the USCGC Cutter here.

From wiki: A barque, barc, or bark is a type of sailing vessel with three or more masts having the foremasts rigged square and only the aftermast rigged fore-and-aft.

Thanks to Joey for the alert that the Eagle had arrived!

Yes, that was the Roseway doing doughnuts in the outer harbor.

Roseway doing some doughnuts then exit stage right for a little practice.

A neat way to track some of the schooners coming to participate in the Schooner Festival this weekend. Go to MARINE TRAFFIC.COM and create a free account. Now you can make “My Fleet” and find some of the schooners. You can then see realtime where the schooner is. This only works for boats out there with AIS transponders so some have them, some don’t. If anyone comes up with a more inclusive way to follow the whole fleet before the Mayor’s Cup race post in the comments.

Amistad is departing New London and heading this way!

And here’s the definitive answer to Joey’s question about the Lobster Bake (from the Schooner Fest website)

Schooner Festival Lobster Bake

Two years ago, local blogger Capt. Joey of GoodMorningGloucester came up with a great idea!  Joey suggested that, in order to get the Gloucester community involved with the Schooner Festival, a community lobster bake should be held during the Festival.

Recognizing good advice, the Festival Committee held the 1st annual Community Lobster Bake in 2013 and it was a huge success!  Check out GoodMorningGloucester to see just how successful the event was!

The Community Lobster Bake will be held again in 2014 on Saturday, August 30, 4:30pm-7:30pm at Maritime Gloucester on Harbor Loop in downtown Gloucester. Enjoy freshly steamed lobster, corn on the cob, and a Virgilio’s roll– all for $15 per person. Relax with your dinner on the slopes of the Fitz Henry Lane lawn while listening to Old Cold Tater & Friends. Also available for sale: hot dogs, hamburgers, cookies, cold sodas & spring water, beer & wine. Tickets available in advance from Maritime Gloucester or at the event.
