  1. [...] Gloucester Concierge [...]

    • Great website! Great photos! I am from the area, just moved to Virginia a year ago. Coming back for a vacation in July and August. Is the Adam Sandler flick still being filmed in town? I use to have a website called insidegloucester.com and used it to follow the filming of The Perect Storm years ago. I MISS GLOUCESTER. Any tips on what’s new and good (from brkfst to dinner) would be appreciated. Keep up the fabulous work. Your photos are some of the most beautiful on the subjec of Gloucester that I’ve ever seen. Congratulations.

  2. Where’s the best place to get fresh off the boat fish for dinner?

    • There are several places I would recommend. Steve Connolly Seafood, Intershell, and Ocean Crest would all be excellent choices.

      Steve Connolly Seafood- 978-283-1218
      431 Main St

      Intershell- 978-281-2523
      Fort Square

      Ocean Crest Seafood- 978-281-0232
      88 Commercial St

Congrats Beth on Being The First Served!

  3. Joey;
Are we alone in the Universe?

    • Very funny.

  4. Sorry Joey.
    I could’nt help myself.
This feature is a great idea.

    • well if someone asked for advice on home demolition I would know where to send them- 1 800-pau-ldog

  5. What are the months that lobsters shed their shells, Joey.
Planning a party for Saturday night.

    This is a great service.

    • Lobsters will start to molt in mid June but there will still be hard shell lobsters mixed in the run. Right now lobsters are the best quality that they will be throughout the year because they have been hardening up and are full of meat. They are a bit more expensive but also have a much higher ratio of meat per lb in them.

In the later summer the molt picks up steam and by the fall most of the lobsters are soft shelled.

I personally think that the soft shelled lobsters are sweetest but they also have less meat per lb of lobster. It’s a trade off, but it’s also nice to be able to buy a whole bunch of lobsters for short money in the late summer/fall.

    • Where and when is the party?
      Another Rocky Necker

  6. I’m curious about the larger vessels I sometimes see that aren’t local. Is there anyway to find out about their comings and goings, where they are from, and their purpose?

    • I’m not sure what you mean.

If you mean larger fishing boats that come to Gloucester to sell fish, they don’t have to sign a registry to come into Gloucester and announce their arrival if that is what you mean.

If you wanted to know where they are from when you see them, it should say it’s hailing port on the stern of the boat.

I also don’t think that a boat has to declare what it’s purpose is when it comes into port.
I could be wrong of course but I’ve never heard of a US boat having to register when it hits the dock in a port other than the one it is from.

If you are talking about foreign vessels then I am sure that there is customs and things like that but other than the cruise ships, we don’t usually see to many foreign huge ships here.

Sorry for not fully understanding your question.

  7. Thanks, Joey. Paragraphs 4 & 5 answer most of my question.

  8. Are any Gloucester Block Parties planned for this year? Thanks for this concierge feature!

  9. Joe,…….I was sitting down at Felica Oil w/ cousin Paul, Salvatore and Beanie. The topic came up is. where do you find the bumber sticker ” N.M.F.S. Destroying fisherman and thier communties”

    • I’ll ask Pete Mondello tomorrow

  10. Thanxs Joe. Ill tell cousin Sal, Paul and Beanie what you will find out

  11. I’d like to invite you to the Sargent House Museum for a tour. We’re doing some new things and trying to get the word out.

  12. What are 3 things that people can do to support local business and industry in Gloucester?

    • Shop Downtown
Shop The Farmer’s Market In The Summer
      Eat At Our Local Restaurants

    • I have just recently found out about the good morning blogg at the new ice cream store over the week end. I have logged on daily and found the information and video’s enjoyable. Lots of people I have asked had no idea there was a good morning blogg. I had briefly spoken to Sharon as she took pix’s.

  13. How long do the Lobstermen keep their pots soaking before they pull them?

    • That depends on the time of the year. When the lobsters are running in the fall some lobstermen will haul overnight sets. In the winter and spring they will leave the gear for a week to two week sets.

  14. At our company in Eseesx we are starting a blog, any helpful hints for promoting it? cheers!

    • Update frequently and regularly so people will know they will have something to look forward to.

  15. Hey Joey,

How can we get rid of the lobster traps on the rocks at Bass Rocks? How can we get people to stop dumping them there?

    • The lobstermen don’t drop them on the rocks intentionally. When there is a storm the gear gets washed up on the rocks. I know a couple times a year that there is a group of lobstermen and thier wives that go around the shore and collect marine debris but am not sure if there is a coordinated effort to do so.

  16. What do you think the impact of the CSF (Community Supported Fishery) will be on the local fishermen? Who are the fishermen that will be suppling the fish for this and how are they chosen?

    • I think a handful of fishermen will benefit. From what I gather they will be charging $3.00 per lb of gutted fish. When you consider that professional fish cutters that have cleaned fish their entire lives only get about 33% of the fish as a fillet and a novice trying to fillet a fish would probably only net 20% as a fillet, that would translate to $15 per lb fillets. Hardly a bargain. If you happen to miss the one day out of the week that you can pick up your fish (Thursday) and you pre paid for that fish then your cost per lb goes up even further. If I read the flyer correctly then you can only pick up your fish on Thursday. So why would you do it if you cold buy the fish cheaper, already professionally cleaned and de-boned and were able to buy it any other day of the week by simply walking into Steve Connolly’s when you wanted to? I know there would be some weeks I’d end up not getting the fish because it just didn’t work out with my schedule or something else came up. I don’t know why anyone would do it unless they were too intimidated to go to Steve Connollys or Ocean Crest and buy the same fish, already filleted for half that cost.

  17. Is there a place where you can eat cooked lobster right off the boats on the dock? Not a restaurant but something at the dock? My mother keeps talking about this, but it was probably about 30 years ago when she did this.

    • Roy Moore Lobster in Rockport or you could go to The Lobster Pool in Folly Cove which is a restaurant but has some of the most beautiful outdoor dining views in Ma

  18. I brought my son and daughter-in-law from Denver up to Gloucester last weekend. We loved the area. The people were so friendly, we ate at Latitude 43 and our dinner was amazing. What a beautiful community. I can’t wait to come back this summer!

  19. New to Gloucester, this site and lovin’ it!

    • Be sure to subscribe (for free) so you won’t miss anything!

  20. Hi Joey,
How can I contact you about posting an event?
    Thanks. coco

  21. Anyone up on Seagull species? I grew up on the North Shore, so I am accustom to seagulls, but what are these HUGE ones here? Some of them look like they belong in a freak show!

    • I’m pretty sure the latin term for our seagulls are the homus whatupus. I hope this answers your question. :)

    • I believe the big seagulls you asked about are called Great Blackbacks.
I saw a book once that stated there are 26 types of gulls in the North Atlantic.
I was amazed! I’ve seen Bonaparte gulls here. And regular herring gulls.
Variations in the color of beaks and feet, etc.

  22. Good Answer Joey Good answer

  23. LOL, I’ll post back after I do my own research

    • What, you don’t trust my Latin? Hee Hee

  24. What are those large vessels off the backshore?

    • I can’t see what you are seeing. My guess is either draggers now that the areas are back open to fishing since June 1.

    • those larger vessels might be for the pipe line

  25. love your site, can’t wait to come down to the dock and grab a bumper sticker

  26. and a few lobsters

  27. Hey Joey -

Didn’t you have one of these pass through recently?

    http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2009/06/11/yellow_lobster_with_a_side_of_intrigue/

  28. What’s the story on the Breakwater. When was it
built? Was it built by Gloucester, or was it Fed? Who is responsible for maintaining it, are there
crews regularly inspecting it, under water, checking for breaks or erosion? I often wonder
when I walk out to the end. How deep is it at it’s
deepest spot? Thanks for all you do.

  29. Does anyone know about the trolley bus? I have seen it running, but can’t find a route schedule on CATA online.

    • This is what I found out after speaking with Ronn Garry-

“The trolleys (2) run through Rockport. CATA manages it and according to Bob Ryan it pays for itself. Gloucester had two trolleys that were sold to the the Talidoros family (Manor Inn). They still own them and they haven’t been used since they were purchased. “

  30. Hey, Joey!
Do they still have the Lumpers Picnic.
What a great time that was, if they didn’t get raided by captain Coyle.
How about a story about the Ironmen Lumpers, who could unlaos 1000,000 lbs in the morning so the could make the Dail Double at Sufforks

    Great Column Thanks

    • I don’t think they still have the lumpers picnic but I asked Ron Gilson- Gloucester’s Real Fishing Industry Historian and this is what he had to say-

“Hi Joey: Not to plug my book, but in chapter 17, I do a pretty extensive review of lumpers, the lumpers’ picnic, and a brief rundown of the lumpers involved in the postwar period, complete with pictures.

I got this information from two former lumpers, Joe Mello, on Marble Rd., and Patty Brien, on Eastern Ave. Both are alive and kicking and are great guys that would be more than willing to sit for a interview and tell you the true story of lumpers. As I said, “lumpers were our unsung heroes of that fantastic production period post WW II”.

There is also a delightful, easy to read paperback book, that is a short history of the Lumpers’ Picnic by our own Bill Cahill, now deceased, a former reporter at the GDT (in the lumper era). This book can be found in the library.
      Ron

  31. How about a progress video of the new Crossing,
and the new stores. How is the new Market Basket progressing. Have you been up there Joey?

    • I haventbeen up there, I thought it was tresspassing still.

  32. Joey, What’s up with the Western Venture being docked for so long?

  33. LOL, just looked out and the Western Venture is gone!

    • Katie, the Western Venture was originaly built as a mid-water trawler. The mid-water trawler boats had long stretches of down time due to area closures. They spent a while re-outfitting the Western Venture as a seiner much like Cape Seafoods is doing with the Plan B. The herring seiners can fish in those closed areas where the mid-water trawlers can’t.

  34. Thanks for the info. Obviously, I have a lot to learn about the fishing industry. On another topic, I need a local “go to guy/girl” who knows astronomy. I inherited a map of a binary star my father bought in his parents honor. Do you know anyone who would be willing to help me?

  35. Two things: 1. Back on June 12, Rockynecker asked about the Breakwater. Joe Garland’s book about Eastern Point has information about the building process (and what a process it was).

    2. Since I haven’t heard/seen anything about the ferry to P-town, should we assume it won’t be back this season?

  36. Joe….you told me you wanted know when we put up the greay pole shrine pics down at Felica. Cousin Paul and I will start on that tomorrow around 10

  37. Joey, your response to the woman regarding ” What would you do? ” was perfect. I grew up on the waterfront in Gloucester and that was a real Gloucesterman’s response.
    Well done.

  38. Buono Fiesta! As the new kid on the block, can you tell me the start time/place and route of the procession Friday night?

  39. I had to leave Gloucester 1n 1972 because of work and I really miss the place. I have just found your site and the pictures and videos are fantastic.
Will be coming up in July and staying at the Magnolia Inn. We are looking forward to the great Seafood and great Italian Food and the Back Shore

  40. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05ip-N0H1Ig

Joey, Thought I’d share this with your audience. Just goes to show things aren’t always as they appear

  41. Mornin’ Joey, SUNZOUT !
I’m taking a friend out today, for a birthday Lobster Dinner, and I heard on the radio this morning, about a restaurant in Somerville and Revere that has TWIN LOBSTERS(not identical) for 12.95 for the dinner. That’s a real deal, do you know of
any restaurant on Cape Ann that offers something like this? I’ve not seen adds for this,
but it would be a great attraction for a Gloucester
Restaurant, don’t you think? Do you supply any restaurants in Gloucester?

    • We supply a good majority of local restaurants. I don’t want to single out one of the restaurants but if you look around there are many offering really cheap lobster specials.

The thing about getting lobsters not on teh coast and if it sounds too good to be true is the fact that they could be buying last fall’s run of lobsters that have been sitting around in lobster pounds all winter and spring. They generally have way less meat and the antennae are all chewed up as opposed to the fresh caught local lobsters you would get in Gloucester.

So a “Deal” up in Somerville might not really be such a “Deal”

  42. Thanks Joey,
Always best to ask an expert! We’ll stay in Gloucester, for our Lobsters.

  43. Joey:

    Great blog. On it daily!

Question: I see that Salem Sound Coastwatch is doing a lot of good things. Any similar organizations on Cape Ann? If not, time to start one?

    Rich

    • I gotta be honest. I’ve never heard of Salem Sound Coastwatch.

  44. Hi Joey,
Looks like major progress at Gloucester Crossing,
road clearing, tree removal, any access for video
taking yet? Don’t you have access to a helicopter? Are any local stores going to open there? Like maybe a Lobster Pound? Or, Lobster
Rolls and Fried Clams Shop? People have to eat
    while they shop.

    • There is talk of The Mrs setting up shop at next year’s Farmer’s Market and spreading lobster roll joy to the masses.

      • Joey, make sure the Mrs brings your s dressed in their pink lobsta sweaters. Great marketing and a real family business!

    • Rocky, I tried to research Gloucester Crossing online and can’t find any new leases. The Gull is advertising for help for a new pub, not sure what’s up with that…

    • Word on the street is 5 Guys Burgers and a pizza joint

    • Dollar Tree is opening at the Crossing

  45. We are visiting Gloucester end of this month for a day and i was wondering if you could tell me the best time to see the lobster boats coming in/out of the harbor? Also, any close shoreline/beach we could go just to look not to swim?

    • The lobster boats head out between 6AM and 7:30AM they start to return tothe dock between 11:30AM and 4:30PM.

If you want to watch the lobster boats unload you can come down our dock. If you want to go to the beach, here’s a list-
      http://www.bostoncentral.com/activities/beaches/p870.php

    • Kim, I like to visit St Peter’s Dock downtown and walk along the waterfront to the left. There’s a lobsta boat dock there too. Down further is The Loop with the Heritage Museum with a dory building shop. Good Harbor beach has great views! Enjoy your visit!

  46. Hey Joey

I live in Palm Beach FL now butt my roots alwaays in GLOUCESTER
    Thanks
    Capt Joe Santos

    • Joe, look in the right hand column.

  47. Great feature. You are like a one man chamber of commerce.

  48. HI JOEY,
GUESS WHAT, CAPT JOE AND SONS WON THE
READERS CHOICE AWARD FAVORITE, IN THE
BEST OF THE NORTH SHORE AWARDS 2009.

CHECK IT OUT ON LINE. (ROY MOORE WON THE
NORTH SHORE MAGAZINE AWARD) I had some of your Lobster at a party this weekend, so I can see why you won.!!!!!

  49. Joey, what’s up with the blue boat that goes out almost every night carrying what looks like a trash dumpster?

  50. I just had a great idea for a Gloucester event:
    Lobster Rodeo

(PETA might not sign on as a founding sponsor but any Lobster that gets roped could also win his freedom. Imaging a lobster boat motoring out into the outer harbor and all of the “winners” getting thrown overboard.)

(Maybe, I just need more sleep.)

  51. Just moved back to Gloucester after being away for a few years. I’m frustrated with my 1 1/2 hour commute each way. What are the best resources in Gloucester to try to find a local job? I’d like to work within the community. Thanks :)

  52. Thanks Joey, but I couldn’t get the links to work. OK, I’m guessing the Providenza dumps the clam shells after Intershell shucks them? But where? And isn’t there a by-product that could be made from them? What ever happened to clamshell driveways anyway? And on another subject while I have your attention, I think I saw a coyote inside the Building Center fence last night? He escaped out to the empty lot in front of the work boat docks.

    • Katie you shoulda had a camera with you. Then we coulda posted the pics here.

  53. I’m trying to find out if the Shuttle Boat that used
to stop at 10Pound Island, Rocky Neck and Downtown Gloucester is still running, If so, how
do I get a schedule? Anyone know?

  54. Has anyone seen the help wanted post on Craigslist for a hairstylist for a biker salon in Gloucester? ” No experience necessary”; send a photo with resume?

    • You gonna put in for teh job Katie? I dare ya to call in!

  55. LOL, Joey! I’m more of a sidecar …

  56. …babe

  57. I am writing a novel involving Gloucester schooner fishing around 1918-1921. My grandfather’s name is one of those listed on the memorial of those lost at sea. My father is a graduate of Gloucester High. But…they are no longer here to respond and I am sitting here on an island in Puget Sound, Washington. The question: How long would it take a fishing schooner (cod) with 6 – 8 dories on board to go from Gloucester to the south end of the Grand Banks, Newfoundland, in good weather? I appreciate any help you can give.

  58. Is it true that there is a new Chef at the DogBar Resturant. I am really excited to se what she comes up with. I think her name is Saskia….
The Dogbar is a great place, its going to be even better with the food!!! Can someone please tell me this is true!!!

  59. As you, and many others here, are authorities on Gloucester, maybe you can help me? I found these videos claiming to be of geothermal vents near the Steel Derrick quarry in Rockport.

Now, I’ve been going to Cape Ann camping, hiking, biking, for 30 years, and I’ve never heard anything about this.

At least one other person commented, crudely albeit adamantly, that the claim is not credible.

    Whaddya’ know?

    John

    W=ater
    T=est
    F=ails

We thought it would make people laugh or cry

  61. Does anyone remember the picture of the sailing ship painted on a rock in the bass rocks area?

    • No, coolpapa, do you have any pictures of it?

  62. Actually I do in a pre digital age Kodachrome slide (with minimal apologies to Paul Simon). if I can dig it out I will scan and send.
It was a large painting too and the kids always played a game of who could find it first each year.

  63. Hi,
I’m originally from MA. and am planning a trip to New England from my home in TX.
If anyone could let me know if the “Allen Estes Band” is playing in the area on 10/1-10/10 ‘09 I’d really appreciate it.

  64. Thinking about taking the wife and kids to Gloucester for a few nights around the Ides of November.

Anything interesting going on? More importantly, how do the lobsters run then, that’s really the driving force for me!

    • Plenty of lobsters around in November. They dont drop off until January.

What is teh Ides of November? Forgive my ignorance.

      • Ides of November was a Julius Caesar reference, and an attempt at humor. “Ides” is an archaic term meaning the 15th day of certain months

Caesar allegedly was warned by a seer, to beware, “the Ides of March”, and he was assassinated shortly thereafter on March 15th, 44 BC.

I was thinking of coming around the 15th of November, not sure I can wait that long, though.

        Thanks for the info.

  65. Hi Joey,

Is that your big red LIVE LOBSTERS sign with
a price per pound, near the sidewalk near your

    • No, that’s our neighbors.

  66. hello joe. tis rory…im putting on big art show next fri and sat night fromm 9 to 6 at the cabi building next to cvs i was wonderin if you do a quick in terview with me….take care rory

  67. What’s the address of Duckworth Beach Gourmet?

  68. Can folks please recommend the top 3 places for breakfast ( and their best items ) on Cape Ann. Thanks.

  69. Sugar Magnolia’s on Main St. Open at 7am. All of their Pancakes and French Toast. Try the Carrot Cake Pancakes with Cream Cheese Butter, (not lo cal but great for special occasion).

Also serves great lunch, try the Fatoush Salad,
    great flavors and healthy.

  70. Can someone recommend a lunch place with a great view and fresh, broiled haddock for a dieting visitor?

    • Lat 43 has great views of the working harbor. Also Cruiseport and The Gloucester House

  71. We are returning to Gloucester this weekend and wonder where we might be able to purchase some linguisa to bring home? We used to go to Trupianos and that was great. Any other thoughts? We’d love to bring some back with us and treat our friends.

    • Try Duckworth Beach Gourmet on Washington Street
