Great website! Great photos! I am from the area, just moved to Virginia a year ago. Coming back for a vacation in July and August. Is the Adam Sandler flick still being filmed in town? I use to have a website called insidegloucester.com and used it to follow the filming of The Perect Storm years ago. I MISS GLOUCESTER. Any tips on what’s new and good (from brkfst to dinner) would be appreciated. Keep up the fabulous work. Your photos are some of the most beautiful on the subjec of Gloucester that I’ve ever seen. Congratulations.

Steve Connolly Seafood- 978-283-1218
431 Main St
Intershell- 978-281-2523
Fort Square
Ocean Crest Seafood- 978-281-0232
88 Commercial St

What are the months that lobsters shed their shells, Joey.
Planning a party for Saturday night.
This is a great service.
By: rockynecker on April 20, 2009
at 6:39 am
Lobsters will start to molt in mid June but there will still be hard shell lobsters mixed in the run. Right now lobsters are the best quality that they will be throughout the year because they have been hardening up and are full of meat. They are a bit more expensive but also have a much higher ratio of meat per lb in them.
In the later summer the molt picks up steam and by the fall most of the lobsters are soft shelled.
I personally think that the soft shelled lobsters are sweetest but they also have less meat per lb of lobster. It’s a trade off, but it’s also nice to be able to buy a whole bunch of lobsters for short money in the late summer/fall.

I’m curious about the larger vessels I sometimes see that aren’t local. Is there anyway to find out about their comings and goings, where they are from, and their purpose?
By: Bernie on April 20, 2009
at 7:22 am
I’m not sure what you mean.
If you mean larger fishing boats that come to Gloucester to sell fish, they don’t have to sign a registry to come into Gloucester and announce their arrival if that is what you mean.
If you wanted to know where they are from when you see them, it should say it’s hailing port on the stern of the boat.
I also don’t think that a boat has to declare what it’s purpose is when it comes into port.
I could be wrong of course but I’ve never heard of a US boat having to register when it hits the dock in a port other than the one it is from.
If you are talking about foreign vessels then I am sure that there is customs and things like that but other than the cruise ships, we don’t usually see to many foreign huge ships here.
Sorry for not fully understanding your question.

How long do the Lobstermen keep their pots soaking before they pull them?
By: capeannpainter on April 29, 2009
at 5:41 pm
That depends on the time of the year. When the lobsters are running in the fall some lobstermen will haul overnight sets. In the winter and spring they will leave the gear for a week to two week sets.

Hey Joey,
How can we get rid of the lobster traps on the rocks at Bass Rocks? How can we get people to stop dumping them there?
By: Bass Rocks on May 8, 2009
at 2:25 pm
The lobstermen don’t drop them on the rocks intentionally. When there is a storm the gear gets washed up on the rocks. I know a couple times a year that there is a group of lobstermen and thier wives that go around the shore and collect marine debris but am not sure if there is a coordinated effort to do so.

What do you think the impact of the CSF (Community Supported Fishery) will be on the local fishermen? Who are the fishermen that will be suppling the fish for this and how are they chosen?
By: Beth on May 9, 2009
at 10:53 am
I think a handful of fishermen will benefit. From what I gather they will be charging $3.00 per lb of gutted fish. When you consider that professional fish cutters that have cleaned fish their entire lives only get about 33% of the fish as a fillet and a novice trying to fillet a fish would probably only net 20% as a fillet, that would translate to $15 per lb fillets. Hardly a bargain. If you happen to miss the one day out of the week that you can pick up your fish (Thursday) and you pre paid for that fish then your cost per lb goes up even further. If I read the flyer correctly then you can only pick up your fish on Thursday. So why would you do it if you cold buy the fish cheaper, already professionally cleaned and de-boned and were able to buy it any other day of the week by simply walking into Steve Connolly’s when you wanted to? I know there would be some weeks I’d end up not getting the fish because it just didn’t work out with my schedule or something else came up. I don’t know why anyone would do it unless they were too intimidated to go to Steve Connollys or Ocean Crest and buy the same fish, already filleted for half that cost.

I believe the big seagulls you asked about are called Great Blackbacks.
I saw a book once that stated there are 26 types of gulls in the North Atlantic.
I was amazed! I’ve seen Bonaparte gulls here. And regular herring gulls.
Variations in the color of beaks and feet, etc.

By: Katieoaks on June 12, 2009
at 9:50 am
This is what I found out after speaking with Ronn Garry-
“The trolleys (2) run through Rockport. CATA manages it and according to Bob Ryan it pays for itself. Gloucester had two trolleys that were sold to the the Talidoros family (Manor Inn). They still own them and they haven’t been used since they were purchased. “

Hey, Joey!
Do they still have the Lumpers Picnic.
What a great time that was, if they didn’t get raided by captain Coyle.
How about a story about the Ironmen Lumpers, who could unlaos 1000,000 lbs in the morning so the could make the Dail Double at Sufforks

By: Lumpers Kid on June 12, 2009
at 5:40 pm
I don’t think they still have the lumpers picnic but I asked Ron Gilson- Gloucester’s Real Fishing Industry Historian and this is what he had to say-
“Hi Joey: Not to plug my book, but in chapter 17, I do a pretty extensive review of lumpers, the lumpers’ picnic, and a brief rundown of the lumpers involved in the postwar period, complete with pictures.
I got this information from two former lumpers, Joe Mello, on Marble Rd., and Patty Brien, on Eastern Ave. Both are alive and kicking and are great guys that would be more than willing to sit for a interview and tell you the true story of lumpers. As I said, “lumpers were our unsung heroes of that fantastic production period post WW II”.
There is also a delightful, easy to read paperback book, that is a short history of the Lumpers’ Picnic by our own Bill Cahill, now deceased, a former reporter at the GDT (in the lumper era). This book can be found in the library.

Joey, What’s up with the Western Venture being docked for so long?

at 6:59 pm
LOL, just looked out and the Western Venture is gone!
By: Katieoaks on June 19, 2009
at 7:11 pm
Katie, the Western Venture was originaly built as a mid-water trawler. The mid-water trawler boats had long stretches of down time due to area closures. They spent a while re-outfitting the Western Venture as a seiner much like Cape Seafoods is doing with the Plan B. The herring seiners can fish in those closed areas where the mid-water trawlers can’t.

Mornin’ Joey, SUNZOUT !
I’m taking a friend out today, for a birthday Lobster Dinner, and I heard on the radio this morning, about a restaurant in Somerville and Revere that has TWIN LOBSTERS(not identical) for 12.95 for the dinner. That’s a real deal, do you know of
any restaurant on Cape Ann that offers something like this? I’ve not seen adds for this,
but it would be a great attraction for a Gloucester
Restaurant, don’t you think? Do you supply any restaurants in Gloucester?
By: rockynecker on July 9, 2009
at 7:21 am
We supply a good majority of local restaurants. I don’t want to single out one of the restaurants but if you look around there are many offering really cheap lobster specials.
The thing about getting lobsters not on teh coast and if it sounds too good to be true is the fact that they could be buying last fall’s run of lobsters that have been sitting around in lobster pounds all winter and spring. They generally have way less meat and the antennae are all chewed up as opposed to the fresh caught local lobsters you would get in Gloucester.
So a “Deal” up in Somerville might not really be such a “Deal”

I am writing a novel involving Gloucester schooner fishing around 1918-1921. My grandfather’s name is one of those listed on the memorial of those lost at sea. My father is a graduate of Gloucester High. But…they are no longer here to respond and I am sitting here on an island in Puget Sound, Washington. The question: How long would it take a fishing schooner (cod) with 6 – 8 dories on board to go from Gloucester to the south end of the Grand Banks, Newfoundland, in good weather? I appreciate any help you can give.

As you, and many others here, are authorities on Gloucester, maybe you can help me? I found these videos claiming to be of geothermal vents near the Steel Derrick quarry in Rockport.
Now, I’ve been going to Cape Ann camping, hiking, biking, for 30 years, and I’ve never heard anything about this.
At least one other person commented, crudely albeit adamantly, that the claim is not credible.

Does anyone remember the picture of the sailing ship painted on a rock in the bass rocks area?

No, coolpapa, do you have any pictures of it?

Actually I do in a pre digital age Kodachrome slide (with minimal apologies to Paul Simon). if I can dig it out I will scan and send.
It was a large painting too and the kids always played a game of who could find it first each year.

Hi,
I’m originally from MA. and am planning a trip to New England from my home in TX.
If anyone could let me know if the “Allen Estes Band” is playing in the area on 10/1-10/10 ‘09 I’d really appreciate it.

Thinking about taking the wife and kids to Gloucester for a few nights around the Ides of November.
Anything interesting going on? More importantly, how do the lobsters run then, that’s really the driving force for me!

Plenty of lobsters around in November. They dont drop off until January.
What is teh Ides of November? Forgive my ignorance.

Ides of November was a Julius Caesar reference, and an attempt at humor. “Ides” is an archaic term meaning the 15th day of certain months
Caesar allegedly was warned by a seer, to beware, “the Ides of March”, and he was assassinated shortly thereafter on March 15th, 44 BC.
I was thinking of coming around the 15th of November, not sure I can wait that long, though.
Thanks for the info.

Also serves great lunch, try the Fatoush Salad,

We are returning to Gloucester this weekend and wonder where we might be able to purchase some linguisa to bring home? We used to go to Trupianos and that was great. Any other thoughts? We’d love to bring some back with us and treat our friends.

Do you know if the Azoreon is a good place to eat? My friends are thinking about going there tonight to celebrate their anniversary.
Thanks!

It’s one of the only joints in town I’ve never eaten at. I hear the tapas tower is good though.
