Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the tattooed, ruthless computer hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate. When the pair link Harriet’s disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger’s are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

“A visual feast…Unlike anything I have ever seen before!” -Lou Lumenick, New York Post

Do not miss the highly anticipated new animated masterpiece from the producers of “Kirikou and the Sorceress” and “The Triplets of Belleville.” Magic, fantasy and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in this sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. Features the voices of Brendan Gleeson, Mick Lally, Evan McGuire and Christen Mooney.

Young Brendan lives in a remote medieval outpost under siege from barbarian raids. But a new life of adventure beckons when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying an ancient but unfinished book, brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the fairy Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan’s determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

Movie – “The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus”

“Shot through with a bold, extravagant generosity of spirit, this journey behind the literal and figurative looking glass marks a gratifying return to form for Gilliam, whose recent films haven’t quite lived up to his capacities.” -Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

“Longtime fans who wondered if Gilliam had simply run out of steam should have a grand time.” -Daniel M. Kimmel, NorthShoreMovies.net

In modern London, a centuries old carriage stops randomly to present sixteenth century style entertainment. The very old man (Christopher Plummer) who runs the show is carrying a great weight – a deal he with Mr. Nick (Tom Waits) for youth in immortality is about to come due on the sixteenth birthday of his only daughter, Valentina (sweetheart faced Lily Cole). His herald, Anton (Andrew Garfield), who has loved her from afar, must try to seduce five souls before his boss’s newest player Tony (Heath Ledger), in order to win her within “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.” Completed after Ledger’s untimely death, the film, by ex-Python Terry Gilliam, features Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell, the film is a tribute both to the late actor and the film’s visionary creator, the director of such cult favorites as “Brazil” and “The Fisher King.”

Dirty Folk Rocker Jessica Delfino in Gloucester on Wednesday!

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3 @ 8:00PM (DOORS 7:30PM)

CAPE ANN COMMUNITY CINEMA

“Jessica Delfino has one of the funniest bits I’ve ever heard…smart, socially aware comedy.” -The Huffington Post

“A stirring show of ribald folk songs. There’s more to this seriously talented comic songwriter than jokes…a tough show to top” — London METRO

“We were immediately stuck to our seats stunned and smiling as Jessica Delfino engaged us in tune after tune…She is funny. And smart.” — Thurston Moore & Byron Coley, Arthur Magazine

Glitters, sprinkles, rainbow fluff: A) the first few words of a kids’ song? Or, B) the opening line of an edgy, electro-pop number which got Jessica publicly denounced by the US Catholic League, sealed her first record deal and sent her on a UK tour where she had sold out shows? That would be “B”.

Introducing Jessica Delfino. Originally hailing from Damariscotta, Maine, Jessica now calls New York City her home, but she spends a good amount of her time on the road these days, sharing her “dirty folk rock” with anyone who will listen. And it turns out there are actually plenty of people who are ready to hear Jessica’s often comedic, sometimes naughty ballads, anthems and musical numbers.

Much of the award-winning songstress’s repertoire addresses the darker side of life, as in her song, “I Hate Everybody”, or deconstructs sex acts posing as anti-war campfire songs, as in her song, “No More War”. In some songs, she keeps it clean, discussing unicorns and the like. Her bevy of unusual instruments include the normal enough guitar, but then she adds to that an “emergency whistle”, a “q-chord”, and a “flying V ukulele”, and you’ve got “fun for the whole family,” Jessica explains, “except for the kids.”

Jessica recently performed at the world famous Reading & Leeds Festival in England where Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain famously rolled himself out onto the stage in a wheel chair some years ago. Jessica’s work has appeared on TV, radio and she was just this week touted as one of “NYC’s 50 most stylish people” in a photo spread in Time Out NY. Oh, and she is something of an internet celebrity. If you don’t believe it, she suggests you just “google her and see what comes up.”

Fishing Film – “A Fish Story” (2/24/10)

WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 24TH @ 7:30PM

On this national day of protest and awareness, come share in the tale of two women who lead their communities in a battle for control of the ocean. Angela Sanfilippo of Gloucester, Massachusetts, and Shareen Davis of Chatham, Massachusetts were born into fishing families and married men who continue to make a living from the sea. Fishing defines who they are and has sustained their communities for generations. But their way of life is threatened when a powerful coalition of national environmental groups file a lawsuit that could put hundreds of fishermen out of business. Three hundred years of fishing tradition and the health of the ocean hangs in the balance.

Courtney Hayes, one of the producer-directors of the film, will present the film and host a Q&A after.

The end of seafood by 2048? Some people think so. If it happens, will consumers have been to blame? Politicians who ignore the advice and pleas of scientists? Fishermen who break quotas and fish illegally? The global fishing industry? The film suggests some preventative solutions that are simple and doable, but does the world have the crucial political will to react in time, or is this whole “Inconvenient Truth” about our oceans just a big lie? Narrated by Ted Danson.

In The Loop is a smart comedy that is drawing instant comparisons to some of the great political and absurdist comedies such as Doctor Strangelove, Wag The Dog and Thank You For Smoking by way of the legendary troupe Monty Python. With razor-sharp, truly laugh-out-loud dialogue the film pokes fun at the absurdity and ineptitude of our highest leaders. With everyone looking out for number one, and the fate of the free world at stake (but apparently incidental), the hilarious ensemble cast of characters bumbles its way through Machiavellian political dealings, across continents, and toward comic resolutions that are unforeseeable.

“A venomous and incisive cinema exposé and it builds a relentless head of comic steam that never subsides.” -Mark Keizer, Boxoffice Magazine

“The savage comedy of ‘In The Loop’ is enough to justify hailing it as a triumph.” -Allan Hunter, Daily Express

2008 ACADEMY AWARD WINNER – BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

“Unforgettable…a deeply touching movie exploring an incredible range of emotions.” -Jeffrey Lyons, Reel Talk

“The most moving film I have ever seen commemorating the bonds between the living and the dead.” -Andrew Sarris, New York Observer

Departures is Yojiro Takita’s deeply moving and irreverently amusing meditation on love, acceptance and coping with loss. It is the story of Daigo, a devoted cellist in an orchestra that has just been dissolved and who is suddenly left without a job. Daigo decides to move back to his old hometown with his wife to look for work and start over. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover that the job is actually for a “Nokanshi,” a funeral professional who prepares deceased bodies for burial and entry into the next life. While his wife and others despise the job, Daigo takes a certain pride in his work and begins to perfect the art of acting as a gentle gatekeeper between life and death, between the departed and the family of the departed. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living.

OUTRAGE
From Academy Award-nominated documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick (“This Film Is Not Yet Rated”) comes Outrage, a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. Boldly revealing the hidden lives of some of the United States’ most powerful policymakers, Outrage takes a comprehensive look at the harm they’ve inflicted on millions of Americans, and examines the media’s complicity in keeping their secrets. The film probes deeply into the psychology of this double lifestyle, the ethics of outing closeted politicians, the double standards that the media upholds in its coverage of the sex lives of gay public figures, and much more.

Increasingly lonely, the only consideration she receives comes from her friend Mitch, who tries to help her. After a chance encounter with Elena, a Mexican woman, Julia convinces herself – as much in panic and despair as for financial gain – to commit a violent act. As the story unfolds, her journey becomes a headlong flight on a collision course, but somehow she makes the choice of life over death.
