Andre Gide Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

“Art is the collaboration between God and the artist, and the less the artist does the better.”

André Gide (1869-1951)

image

A native of Normandy, Gide published his first novel at 22 and went on to write dozens more, as well as plays, essays and autobiographical works, receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947. Much of his writing centers on the search for intellectual honesty in a world constrained by false moralism. Controversy swirled around him almost his entire life, principally for his open attraction to men much younger than himself, and for his marriage to his cousin, never consummated, while siring a daughter with another woman. In his politics Gide seemed to worship Soviet Communism from afar, until he visited Russia in the 1930’s, after which he became its vocal critic. He spent a significant portion of his life in the then French colonies of North and Central Africa and passed the bulk of the Second World War in Tunisia, but ultimately returned to Paris before his death.

Host A Foreign Exchange Student This Summer!

image

Hi Joey,

I was wondering if you would be able to post something to help spread the word.  There are about 250 foreign exchange teens coming to the North Shore area this summer and they need host families to stay with.  The kids come for about 3 weeks and are in school M-F 8-6 and there is a bus that will take them there….so it’s a great opportunity to host because there isn’t a huge commitment involved.  Also there is a $100 stipend to help pay for additional food, water, etc used by the students.  I hosted last summer for the first time and I really loved it, so I’m helping to find families in this area to hopefully benefit from the experience as well.  I’ll attach a flier with the info too if you want it.  Thanks so much if you can post this!  Also, not sure if you could/would post it to the Facebook page too.  It would be super helpful!  The students who came last summer rated their experiences so high that the North Shore got the best scores in the country….so there are 3 times as many kids signed up to come to this area this summer….so they really need to find more host families.

Thanks!

Kristen

Rockport: Baba Yaga was Here!

A children's folk tale, written about 300 years ago, is titled "Baba Yaga." IIt takes place in the Slavic countryside in the vicinity of Russia. I read it in high sxhool and Baba Yaga's magical hut made an impression on me, When the witch wanted to go somewhere the hut sprouted chicken legs and scurried along. The painting of a dog on a doghouse in Rockport reminded me of Baba Yaga and the hut: http://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2014/03/26/dog-house-rockport/#comments

Photos from March Sailing Adventures

Hi Joey,
I just wanted to share some pictures of the Sail GHS Racing Team. They have been out practicing for the last week and a half for their upcoming scrimmage. A little wind, a little rain, a little cold, and some freezing waters can’t keep these sailors away. No wimps here – look at those smiles!

Saturday March 29th – 30th Cape Ann Weekend Weather Cast..

Marine Weekend Forecast…
Sat NW winds 5 to 10 kt…becoming NE in the afternoon. Seas 2 to 3 ft. Showers likely. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.
Sat Night NE winds 10 to 15 kt with gusts up to 20 kt. Seas 2 to 4 ft. Rain. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.
Sun NE winds 10 to 15 kt…becoming N 15 to 20 kt in the afternoon. Gusts up to 25 kt. Seas 3 to 5 ft. Rain. Vsby 1 to 3 nm.
Sun Night N winds 15 to 20 kt with gusts up to 25 kt. Seas 4 to 7 ft. Rain.

Weekend Forecast ……
Sun and clouds  early Saturday then it goes all down hill from there.. Temps drop through the 40′s late Sat aft with heavy rains Saturday Night and Sunday … Lows Saturday Night around 37-43 degrees .. Sunday’s highs in the low 40′s cool and raw with periods of rain..
Winds begin to pick up later Saturday afternoon and ESP Saturday Night through Sunday from the NE at 25-35mph sustained with gusts close to 50mph!
Depending on the position and strength of the low pressure system winds could be stronger then what I’m currently forecasting …Cut off low pressure will be trapped in the upper levels off our coastline south of Cape Cod due to the developing Blocking going on up in the North Atlantic . The “Greenland Block ” .. Via thanks to my pal Anthony for sharing this great graph ..

We also need to watch for excessive tide cycles with an onshore fetch for more then 48hrs .. Piling waves and water up on the coastline cycle after cycle .. Coastal Flooding will become a concern across Eastern Ma Coastal Communities minor to perhaps moderate with significant beach erosion also possible .. So something to watch very carefully ..

As Far as QPF amounts go , looking at a Widespread 2-4″ of rain with isolated locally higher amounts possible …

Worst Saturday Night Into Sunday …

Now the Wintery Aspect to this storm ..Will be carefully watching colder air drawing south Sunday Night and Monday from Northern New England and SE Canada .. It’s this cold air that may change our rain over to sleet then snow Sunday Night into Monday … Early guess would be for me to call for 2-4″ of snow , but that’s being premature and I need to see if there will be any precipitation left over on the back side of our departing low pressure system .. If it departs at all ..

No panic this isn’t a block buster or powerful storm / but it will be strong and we have managed much stronger storms then what this one will bring !
Thanks again for viewing …
Have a Great Weekend !
