Haystacks

Haystacks are common wherever hay is grown. The purpose is to to let the hay dry in open air, and not become moist and rot. These haystacks were photographed by Gloucester's Charles E. Dennison. I think he was inspired by Monet's famous Haystacks series of oil paintings. From what I know of Dennison, the photo was taken in the North Shore area. He was also a painter. By chance, I was browsing Main Street Arts and Antiques on Main Street. There on the wall was a painting of haystacks by Charles E. Dennison! It was based on this photo. I bought it for a few million dollars less than a Monet. There are still haystacks along Route 133 between Essex and Ipswich. Get some shots while you can.

  1. Fred – This haystack photo brought back a Memory from mom (MFM) here. Cliff Day of Days farm Lanesville raised a special breed of horse’s large maybe Clydesdales(?) Then the fall folks would rent out his services for a wagon hay ride into west Gloucester and stop a place that sold glazed donuts and food cannot recall name?

  2. Hi, as a painter I would love to see the haystacks. I drove out 133 from 128 out to Corliss, I didn’t see any. Could be my eyesight. Could you tell me about were they are?

  3. This haystacks picture brings back memories of 650lb pro wrestler Haystacks Calhoun. Specifically the time when he and Tony Garea defeated Mr. Fuji & Prof. Toru Tanaka for the WWWF Tag Team Title in 1973. I do believe “Haystacks” gave Tanaka the “Big Splash” for the victory.
