I agree – the colors of the water were so bold today… a beautiful sight, even with the chilly breeze!
Is the smelly red sea weed that invaded several of our beaches around Cape Ann, any better on Magnolia Beach? It’s my understanding that this species came from Japan, stuck to the hulls of ships and has found a new home here, unfortunately.

Has anyone noticed recently several days where the ocean water looked more turquoise, like in the warmer climates, than the deep blue so typical of the ocean water here in winter? We were wondering what caused that.
Maybe our Paul Morrison can answer this question. I have noticed as well and thank you for the post
Right, I know everything ;-( Not quite but hey I will pontificate given the chance.
I noticed the same thing this weekend that streaks of aqua were out there that were just over the top brilliant. So here is my best set of guesses.
1) Scuba divers know that dives in the early spring are the best. The visibility can be knock your socks off in clarity because the little copepods and stuff have not bloomed yet because the water is too cold.
2) This year the water is a tad colder than normal. 39F instead of last year at this time a more normal 49F. This might keep in check all those little critters even more that add murkiness to the water.
3) The ocean is blue because it is reflecting the sky. Well duh. But it can really play tricks. You won’t notice that the bright strip of clouds then blue sky above are doing a colorful painting down below in the water. It seems like the past few days the bright blue sky and bright clouds have been outdoing themselves.
Take for instance the sunrise on Monday morning. I was driving off the island and was at the Danvers exit when the sun popped up and made Cape Ann in my rearview mirror look like a painting of paradise lost. I almost turned back.
