New York Times Starts a Lobster Crawl in Gloucester

With most of “the news that’s fit to print” revolving around SSS and politics, it would have been easy to miss this gem about Lobster in the New York Times this week.

So for all of you who did miss it, we thought you’d like to know that  a deliciously written  article by New York Times reporter Glenn Collins entitled Lobster Crawl from Massachusetts to Maine, begins at Gloucester’s own Bass Rocks Ocean Inn.  Check out this excerpt:

Savour Wine and Cheese Reopening! Thursday, November 15

They’ve come a long way from when we did our interview with John Lamirande in the building back on February 17th-

SAVOUR WINE AND CHEESE – BEACH GOURMET (Almost There)!

I am writing to let you all of you know that the long-awaited reopening of Savour Wine and Cheese, and Beach Gourmet Catering is upon us. With the recent event of Hurricane Sandy and some glitches in getting our construction loan, we are slightly behind schedule, but doing well. We plan to reopen for business on Friday November 16 at 11 a.m. (We will be open 7 days a week, Monday – Saturday, from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday, from noon until 6 p.m). We are planning our opening party for Thursday evening, November 15 at 6:30 p.m. We will send an invitation a few days before, so you will know for sure, and can R.S.V.P. First priority will go to Keystone Investors, followed by Wine Club Members. But – it is a big place now, and everyone is welcome.

The construction has come along beautifully, as many of you have seen when walking by. We have a stunning hardwood white oak floor, a state-of-the-art modern kitchen, an elegant chef’s table dining area, and a pristine new cheese counter and deli. Right now, we are putting on finishing touches, including shelving for wine and a center for the new wine machines. Once that is all finished, we have many permits and licenses (from occupancy to food service) to obtain from the city before we can open. But, we have had unprecedented support from all city agencies, particularly the building inspectors, Bill and Greg who have worked closely with us to keep us on track. We also were successful in rezoning the building to its intended purpose as a commercial property, thanks to the cooperative efforts of many on the planning committees and city council. So, we are almost ready to go!

WINE MACHINES ARE HERE!

In addition to working on the building, I have been travelling the country, trying out new products and of course, tasting wine. A recent highlight was a trip to New York for a tasting of several hundred grower champagnes and Italian wines at the Tribeca Grill. Prior to that, I was in Chicago, visiting the president of Metropolis coffee. Here is a photo of me "cupping," which is a ritual much like wine tasting. On a trip to Napa, where I tasted some incredible wines, I discovered Cowgirl Creamery, and Red Hawk cheese (a gorgeous washed rind cheese, similar to Brie, but with a rind that is 100% edible, and delicious). While eating at RPM restaurant in Chicago, I discovered a cold-pressed coffee called "Pure Black," which made a memorable Affogato dessert.  I drink it daily as an afternoon pick-me-up. It comes in a dark bottle, like beer, and is brewed cold, for 16 hours in steel tanks. Most people do not realize that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in the American diet. So, you can grab a cold bottle anytime, as an alternative to an afternoon soda, or when you are too busy to sit down for a hot coffee or tea (healthy and invigorating)! Finally, we have been working with Ariston to bring in bulk Olive Oil and Balsamic vinegar, you can purchase and refill whenever needed. So, in addition to wine, cheese, olives, breads, and specialty meats, we will have many items for you to "try before you buy."

Joey,
Thank you for all the support that GMG gave the team this year. The parents
and girls loved opening up GMG and  seeing their pictures.
To wrap up our season, I  thought that I would share the Captains speeches
that they gave at our celebration party. They said it the BEST!
These speeches represent the type of athletes we have in Gloucester, the
team spirit , and culture that was created amongst the girls this year.
It was truly amazing to watch them practice and improve each day.
The dedication and commitment was solid. The coaches are proud of the girls
and thrilled to have been a part of such an accomplishment.

O’MALEY FIELD HOCKEY TEAM CAPTAINS SO PROUD OF THE TEAM 14-0

Callie O’Leary writes- 

Team. Team means a group of people linked in a common purpose. We are group
of individuals that support each other.  We all share a love for field
hockey. That is what links us. Throughout the season, we have learned to
play as friends and to play as one. There is no "I" in team. We support each
other. I am very fortunate to be on this field hockey team. It has been an
honor to serve as Captain on the 2012 O’Malley UNDEFEATED Field Hockey team.
I am so proud of what a great team we are. We have stayed strong on the
field and we never backed down. We have remained together throughout the
season. We kicked butt!!!! We stayed undefeated because we played with our
heads in the game and turned it on! I am so proud! Love you guys!!!!!

McKenzie Plante writes-

I am so happy that I got to share my last year of O’Maley field hockey with
this team. I have created new friendships and have learned many life lessons
with in practices games, bus rides and fun times in the locker rooms! I feel
that once are cleats were on and we were playing field-hockey everyone was
friends; we were one big family. In the end, it didn’t matter who scored or
who had the amazing drive or who stopped the ball. What mattered was that we
all walked off the field as a team and that’s what we did.  The bus rides
and locker room experiences who could forget them? "Girl on fire", pizza on
the bus  or when that one reff wouldn’t stop calling things on us, we still
took the win. Best of all of celebration in Boston. I am pretty sure that we
will all recall these memories when we are in high school. Guess what were
undefeated!!!  14-0 We couldn’t of done it without our three coaches. Mom,
Marcy Plante, I can here you from a mile away… I can here you scream  goal
post, then shout in excitement when you hear the boom of the ball slamming
the net. Allison Monell, I always love running off the field, you are always
there to welcome us. Ellen Prescott, you made our defense so strong and your
energy helped us do our best on the field. I am so proud of my team. I’m
proud of all of you girls. I got to have the experience of a life time! We
couldn’t of done it without Jenna and Brie, our crazy defense who would stop
anyone that tried to past and our offence who were GOAL crazy, scoring over
53 goals! Let’s give it up to a team that worked our hardest and earned what
we deserved, a team that never gave up, a team that never went easy, a team
I call my family.

Girls, what an amazing season. Being an undefeated team was a high goal that
not all teams could have accomplished but this team did. WE have all grown
and learned how to work together not just on the field but as a family.
Everyone put in an amount of effort that was unbelievable and stepped up
when they needed too. Everyone on this team always had the best attitude, no
matter what and was always ready to play . Being a part of this field hockey
team gave me a new family and that is why I will never forget this season.

It is Fall Back Time

The 2012 version of Daylight Savings Time ends this coming weekend, so don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before going to bed Saturday night, Nov. 3.
Technically, you should set your clocks back one hour Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 a.m. local daylight time, which will then become 1 a.m. local daylight time.
Not all places in the U.S. observe daylight time. In particular, Hawaii and most of Arizona do not use it.  Also this is a good time to remember to change your smoke and CO batteries.  We do get an extra hour of sleep.

The Twelve Days of Christmas

The Twelve Days of Christmas Dinner Napkins

Yesterday E.J. posted her photo of Haiti Projects merchandise for sale. I thought you might be interested to know that the set of four napkins pictured above was designed by me.

My designs were inspired by the first four verses of the English Christmas Carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas–A partridge in a pear tree, two turtle doves, three French hens, and four calling birds. Perhaps knowing what the images symbolize, you may be even more interested in purchasing as a holiday gift!

Cape Ann once again featured in The Noise ~ Rockport Show Recommended for This Saturday

Last month I pointed out that The Noise Magazine recommended two Gloucester shows for the week of Oct 22, putting us on par with Cambridge (see post here).  Well there’s a new Noise issue out and this week they recommend a Rockport show (see here) specifically Amy Black with Megan Burtt at the Old Sloop Coffeehouse.  Congrats Amy Black, Megan Burtt, Old Sloop (tickets here) and Rockport!  Oh, and I guess I have to congratulate myself on being right again.  I picked this show in this post .  Here are two more videos from these rising stars, just in case you weren’t convinced by the ones I posted last week.
