Burnham House and Motif # 1 Questions from Claire Higgins

Hi, Joey. Do you happen to know what year the Rockport Fishing Shack (aka Motif No. 1) was built? Also, do you know when the Burnham house

(aka Motif #2), on Route 133, was built? Also, I’ve seen it referred to as both the Mary Burnham House and the Mabel Burnham House. Do you know which is correct?

Please let me know. Thank you very much.

 Sincerely,

 Clare Higgins

  1. Nancy Dudley says:

Mabel Burnham was a teacher in Essex and lived in the house into the 1950′s and 1960′s.

  2. Neither is historically correct. It is the Ebenezer Burnham molding loft (for ship building) on the marsh at Eben’s Creek, which is named after him. Sailing ships were launched into the creek at high tide.

  3. Jan says:

I’ve read (and heard from locals) several dates that the original fishing shack was built, from 1840 to 1889. The current building was destroyed in a blizzard in 1978 and rebuilt the same year.

  4. Will says:

I thought Motif #2 was on the pier behind Motif #1 on Bearskin Neck.
