One Year Anniversary of the Launch of the Schooner Ardelle From Len Burgess

Great weather Monday night for a special sail to celebrate the launch of the schooner Ardelle. It was one year ago last July 9, 2011 that the schooner splashed down into the Essex river in front of about 2500 people. It was a textbook Essex side launch that occurred at high tide about 6 p.m in the evening. What a sight is was. And, a year later here’s Capt. Harold Burnham’s doing what he loves! It would not have been possible without the amazing help of all of the shipwrights, friends and family who helped build and launch the Ardelle!

Harold lights a candle for the cake that celebrates the one year anniversary of the launch of the schooner Ardelle.

Thursday night blues party @ The Rhumb Line to host Ricky “King” Russell

Thursday – 9:00 to 12:00 ~ Dave Sag’s Blues Party

Dave Says,

It’s that time again! We’re gathering all the troops to pay obeisance to the king of the Boston blues Scene: Mr. Ricky “King” Russell. Approved by Pope John Paul Ringo! Everytime he plays here we gotta call in a hazmat team! I’m oiling down my bass in preparation for the great sleazy, cheesy, wheezy effluvium that’s gonna emanate from the throbbing stage. Master of the gritar, this guy will chase you back under your own personal rock where it won’t be safe to come out for weeks! You’ll see!
Unfortunately , his doppleganger on drums, Mr. Ed Scheer, is  down with a bad case of St. Vitus dance, and coupled with unsuccessful cosmetic weenis surgery, won’t be able to hit a stick for several weeks. So a surprise drummer is in the pipeline, trying desperately to get out! Fortunately Mr. Greg T. and myself will be there, litter in tow, to assist in medical emergencies. The bombing will start in 5 minutes….

Loblolly Cove, Rockport, circa 1920

Loblolly Cove, Rockport, circa 1920 Alice M. Curtis/©Fredrik D. Bodin

Gloucester photographer Alice Curtis shot this photograph from Eden Road, looking across Loblolly Cove. The tip of Emerson Point is on the right. Thacher Island sits in the distance, with its two 124 feet tall granite towers. Built in 1861, Thacher has the only remaining twin lights still operating in the United States. I’ve been asked several times in the gallery what loblolly means. Since 1597, loblolly was a restorative thick stew or gruel served on a ship to ailing or injured sailors, much like the way chicken soup is usde today for colds. Also an old British and American naval term, it refers to a warship surgeon’s assistant – a loblolly boy.

Gloucester Harborwalk News! From Catherine Ryan

Hi Joey,

News from the Gloucester HarborWalk.  For readers who haven’t heard, the Gloucester HarborWalk is a free, self guided path downtown for residents, employees of surrounding businesses, and visitors. The build out began this year. There are many elements happening all at once. The blooms and landscaping are already growing in.

The ramp at I4C2 is well under way and part of making the Gloucester HarborWalK image accessible for all image

Some of the Story Moment markers have been installed. Some are maps. You might also see some of the Story Moments or maps wrapped, because they need to “cure” or set for 24 hours before they’re securely installed.  Here’s architect Chris Muskopf from Cambridge Seven Associates with Sarah Garcia and Mike Hale and others up by the Fitz Hugh Lane House today. Also see pictures of Sean and Kevin from Mystic working on the installation of one Story Moment to a granite post; and an art lesson nearby. Sean and Kevin showed us an example of one of the relief icons that can be traced and collected from each Story Moment. The Story Moments also have QR codes to scan. The QRs are not “live”…yet!  Keep checking for yourself the progress as the HarborWalk continues to build out.

It may be summer, but things are not slowing down at the Gloucester Writers Center. The summer kicked off with the Life is the Poem party, celebrating Vincent Ferrini’s birthday. At the party it was announced that a book would be published next spring containing poems that Ferrini wrote to his friends and colleagues on Cape Ann. If you have a poem you would like to share, send a copy to the Gloucester Writers Center at 126 East Main Street in Gloucester.

The Finish Line Writers Group and the Center also hosted bestselling author Brunonia Barry who talked about her transition from self publishing all the way to the New York Times bestseller list. Ms. Barry, who is from Salem, is the author of "The Lace Reader" and "The Map of True Places." A big thank you to Ms. Barry for her informative and entertaining talk, and for answering dozens of questions about the self-publishing.

Check out the calendar of summer events and workshops at the Center by visiting www.gloucesterwriters.org. Summer is not an excuse to ignore your inner writer! :)
