I love your prayer sticks. They are unique & beautiful.
A Blackfoot Native Americanwoman (Black Snake Woman), who taught our daughter, in a class in W. Mass, called these ‘owner’ sticks. Whenever someone wanted to speak at a gathering, their ‘owner’ stick was laid in the center of the circle, & that gave the individual the right to speak. I’ve always loved the idea of them, & have had students create their own in numerous classes I’ve taught about Native Americans.
I can see how the connection of ‘prayer’ & ‘owner’ sticks combine. Each represents the uniqueness of the person who has made them, & ‘speaks’ about/for them in a special way.
The Native Americans have much from which we can learn.

I love your story and would love to hear more about Black Snake Woman and what she taught your daughter.
I’ve seen them described as “Talking Sticks”, giving the individual holding them the right to speak while the rest of the tribe listened. I haven’t heard of the name “owner” sticks – but I like it a lot.
I can see how making prayer sticks / owner sticks would be a great exercise for young students.
I am fascinated with Native American lore and culture (and feel very connected to it somehow) and I totally agree with you…we should all learn as much from their teachings as we can — they are very wise people.

Thanks E.J. Just starting making them a few months ago. My brother passed away very unexpectedly (in Feb) and I had to find a way to try to heal and keep my sanity. I found the wood (or I should say the wood found ME) accidentally and the prayer sticks evolved from there. They are changing every day. Do you think I could have an exhibit at your place next year? How do I submit an application? I hope we get to see you soon…it’s been too long. Hope all is well with you. Hope you have a wonderful summer. Love from us to you.
