Can anyone tell me what type of sea creature created these little mounds in the sand?

They look like ant hills but in the sand.  Shot these pics yesterday on Niles Beach and there were clusters of them all over.

    air bubbles or a whole lot of clams !

    If you play with photoshop at all I’ll bet you can have a lot of fun and get some interesting visual results.
