Just one word…

Karen Ristuben will be performing “Just, one word…” On Monday, March 5, 2012 7:30 pm at the Rose Performance Hall at Endicott College Center for the Arts, Beverly, Mass., co-sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch and the Endicott College Environmental Society.

“Just, one word…” a performance lecture about plastics, addresses the issue of marine plastic pollution from an artist/educator’s perspective.  Karen offesr a different way to represent and communicate the hard scientific data currently the focus of many marine scientists, toxicologists, epidemiologists, and policy-makers. Her project deals with our use, over-use, and disposal of plastics, their toxicity, and their effects on our public health. Highlighting the issue of marine plastic pollution and its impact on ocean ecosystems including the marine food chain, she uses a multi-media performance/lecture format, using her own and archival video and photography, presenting the facts and data in an aesthetically compelling format. Her message is made personal by her personal story, including her voyage in July 2011 through the North Pacific Gyre with a leading science team from Algalita Marine Research Foundation.

About E.J.

Artist, researcher, spiritual traveler of this fascinating orb we inhabit, lover of life and all it has to offer. Hi everyone out there in GMG land. My name is Ellen “E.J.” Lefavour (a/k/a “Ejay Khan” – the pseudonym I used during my years as a political activist artist). I am a newcomer to Cape Ann, and thrilled to be a new contributor to Good Morning Gloucester. I am a painter and photographer who has lived and worked as an artist for 20 years, since leaving the corporate world in 1990 to pursue my passion. My contributions to GMG will consist of images (either my paintings, photographs, or the occasional video) and a little history about the image, called “Did you Know?” I hope to come up with tidbits of information that people don’t already know, or had forgotten they knew. As I am new here, everything is new and fascinating to me, especially the amazing history, so bear with me if I post something that is common knowledge – I’ll eventually come up with something that’s new to you. Please take a minute to comment on my posts, like them or not, especially if you have corrections or something to add, as that is how I, and all of us, learn. Have a Good Morning Gloucester, and a blessed day.

Can folks just show up for this performance? Is the center a sizable venue?

      Hi Sarah Jane,
Yes, you can just show up. The Rose Performance Hall is a beautiful venue, and though I’m not sure of the capacity, it is sizable. I hope to see you on Monday!

We saw Karen perform this amazing presentation last year when she did it at NOAA. No one should miss this, let alone people in Gloucester who have the ocean in their backyard. And this is also important to bring the children to–those above the age of 10 will come away with many positive questions and considerations. Karen is spectacular, engaging, and above all, approachable. Truly a rare commodity in our midst. We are fortunate for her dedication.
