Cracked.com Features Our Boy Jon Sarkin

6 People Who Gained Amazing Skills from Brain Injuries

At the age of 35, New Jersey man Jon Sarkin started to hear ringing in his ear. This was the type of ringing that, it turns out, could only be explained by overgrown blood vessels that require freaking brain surgery to fix.

Sarkin got his noggin cut open to fix the blood vessel, but later suffered a stroke and actually had to have part of his brain removed. All in all, it was almost the worst possible outcome for the surgery aside from death.

The next wave of Cape Ann’s literary greats…

Terry Weber writes-

Just wanted to let you know that the Finish Line Writers Group has been meeting for almost two months at the Gloucester Writers Center. We are all working on our own novels, memoirs or screenplays, yet still finding time to support each other’s projects. At each meeting we have readings and critique time, as well as an educational segment. I have to say we are becoming quite close, and each of us contributes ideas to the group to make it effective and worthwhile. May we all make it to the Finish Line!

Note GMG friend Lois McNulty ‘consulting’ with me. She must be writing a comedy, as I can’t seem to take what she’s saying seriously! ;)

Wulla Says Thanks…

Felt boots at Wulla, just in time for winter.

This Saturday, December 3rd, we will be enjoying some holiday fun at Wulla. There will be wine and treats from 4 until 7 in the evening and a 15% discount on purchases all day.

In case you don’t know about us yet, Wulla makes hand made, natural fiber clothing right here at 1074 Washington Street in downtown Lanesville. Since we opened last summer, all our neighbors and friends have done a great job making us feel welcome and helping to make our little shop a success. So if you’ve never been in, now is a good time to stop by for a drink and a chat, and to help us say “thanks” to everyone.

Sheila Jones Schrank Has Some Nice Things To Say

Hi Joey,
It is amazing how many "good deeds a day"  Good Morning Gloucester does for Gloucester, Massachusetts.
For residents and anyone touring our beautiful city, faithful upkeeping to your site keeps us all informed of daily news issues here in our hometown, for the merchants and businesses who get to talk about the special varieties of local goods and services (especially for holiday shoppers) gives us a wide variety of choices to select from,  sometimes right from our computers using on-line shopping.

Your there to cover the Santa Parade, the tree lighting, special events all over Cape Ann, the Middle St. Walk and on it goes, one adventure after another.
The video clips actually help me to get to know people.  I plan to visit to buy local gifts, most often I can associate a name with a face, or a face to the artist or the music of the musician.  You and I haven’t met yet, but I hold you very high in my esteem and I just want to "thank you" for your enthusiam and for all your elves taken under your wing, I mean "blog" and your dedication to and pride in your community.  I just love this city.

Best Regards & Happy Holidays,
Sheila Jones Schrank
ps. Those holiday photos of your children are just priceless.

Did You Know? (Rabbit, Rabbit)

That “Rabbit rabbit” is a common British superstition, also practiced by people here. The most common modern version states that a person should say “rabbit, rabbit, white rabbit”, “rabbit, rabbit, rabbit”, “rabbits, rabbits, rabbits”, “rabbit, rabbit” or simply “white rabbits” upon waking on the first day of each new month, and on doing so will receive good luck for the duration of that month. In the United States, the tradition is especially common in Nantucket, Cape Cod other towns within Massachusetts and throughout Vermont, notably in Middlebury and Chester.

Did you say Rabbit, Rabbit this morning?  If not, you missed your opportunity for December; however, the next Rabbit, Rabbit day will be New Year’s Day, and if you say Rabbit, Rabbit on the first day of the new year, you get the good luck for the whole year.  So set yourself a reminder for Rabbit, Rabbit Day, Sunday, January 1, 2012 and go for the year of good luck.

Santa in Rockport 2011; this Saturday December 3rd

Elfen wifi wireless reports that Santa will be arriving by boat in Rockport this Saturday December 3rd at 3:45PM. Santa disembarks at Bradley wharf then makes his way to Dock Square to flip the switch on the Christmas Tree at 4 PM.

The following is what it all looked like last year. This year we may be wearing shorts

Santa in Rockport 2010:

As if it was a tradition that went back centuries Santa Claus came to visit Rockport today. On the way to the harbor:

Time’s a wasting. Santa will be there at 3:45PM

The crowd packs the wharfs in the harbor as Santa’s arrival is just moments away:

Harbormasters Rosemary Lesch and Scott Story lead the way, the Freemantle Doctor with Santa, and the Coast Guard protecting the rear:

It’s SANTA!!! It’s SANTA!! It’s SANTA!!!

The crowd goes wild as Santa pulls into Bradley Wharf:

Santa thanks the skipper Mike Tupper of the Freemantle Doctor for the smooth ride while his mother-in-law Nancy McDowell looks on. (Nancy was the one who convinced us that Rockport was the best place on earth to live.) :

Low tide so Santa needs a bit of a goose up the ladder:

Carolers warm up the crowd as Santa makes his way down Bearskin Neck:

Dock Square is cheek to jowl of children all of which swore they had been nice and not naughty:

Santa’s ride is a vintage 1941 Fire Truck. Why buy new when used will do?

The countdown 3, 2, 1

A burst of light as the tree is lit.

Time to refill the hot toddy mug.

The Cherry Street Gang (of Turkeys)

Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo)

The turkeys populating Cape Ann are descended from wild-trapped New York birds. By 1851, the Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) was extirpated from Massachusetts because of widespread loss of habitat and hunting. Nine unsuccessful attempts to reestablish the birds were made between 1911 and 1967. Between 1972 and 1973, 37 birds were released in Berkshire County. The bird’s range quickly expanded, establishing populations from the western to the furthest eastern regions of Massachusetts. From Dave himself,

We’re baack…., After spending a grueling Thanksgiving week off recuperating from  cosmetic  genital mutilation surgery, I’m back, loaded for bear , and ready to chase you back to whatever evil crevice you squirted out from. So, in keeping with the spirit of the season, I give you: Mr. Evan Goodreau. Just back from the Tarzan Musical Re-Education® Camp, our boy is ready to snort you in and exhale you back into the world of chance. Serial-husband, glitarist, front-man and back door man, Evan’s poised  to melt the wax outa your ears. We love this guy. He’s nearly as full of s*** as I am!    And, of course, to round out the ensemble to the nearest decibel, we’ve conjured up Mr. “Molto” Benny Benson, the Ace of Pace, on eggbeaters, as well as Mr. Greg T. and myself, usual suspects, on catarrh and bass. Don’t miss it! And girls: grief counsellors will be available and standing by.   And for those of you who are un- or under employed, or who have chosen not to find a job*, come wheel yourself in to the Rose Baker Senior Center next Monday afternoon and catch the shenanagans of the Good Ole Salty Jazz Band (or GOSJB), of which I am a small part of. These cats swing! And it’s FREE!! From 1 to 3, we’ll be there, sweating profusely….   And finally, I need some more willing victims for my wayward messages. The mail list has been winnowed down, due to many address changes, returned messages, deaths, etc., etc., so, if you got any new or updated addresses for me, pass ‘em along! And don’t worry, i never use them for anything else. Hell, I can hardly use this here computer. email at davesag@verizon.net

Eugene J. Quinn Studio Gallery

The other day I went for a drive to get some photos of Christmas decorations at local shops.  I tried Rocky Neck, but everything was closed and dark, so I ended up at Bearskin Neck in Rockport. Most shops and galleries were closed, but some have very nice Christmas decorations (which I’ll share in another post).  I had the pleasant surprise of finding East Gloucester resident Eugene Quinn still in his studio with an “open” sign in the window.

We had a very nice conversation. Although he and I have never met, it turns out we have met some of the same people in the past because one of his paintings ended up at one of the places where I studied in the seminary.   His work is very beautiful:

He seemed to be just finishing this up when I arrived.

Stop by and visit the gallery! His work is worth seeing first-hand. His regular hours from now until Christmas will be 10AM-5PM (although he may be around off-hours at times). His gallery is at 54 Bearskin Neck Rd., Rockport, MA 01966.
