Out of Africa – A Big Hit

Photos by E.J.

The Opening of the Out of Africa exhibit of photography and paintings by Judith Monteferrante, Rich Seeley and Roger Salisbury was a big hit, and an amazing grand finale guest artists exhibit opening for the first season of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Rocky Neck. We have never had so many people packed inside and waiting outside the Gallery for an event this season – and we’ve had many very well attended events. A gallery talk was scheduled for 6:00 pm, but the crowd was so thick that it was impossible for the artists to even consider giving a talk. Neighbors watching the flow of people in and out, estimated visitors throughout the evening at between 150 and 200 people. Kudos to the Gloucester Daily Times for putting the opening info on the front page of Saturday’s paper, as many people who came said they had learned about it from the Times. For those of you who wanted to see the exhibit but couldn’t make it to the opening, or those who came but couldn’t see the work because of all the people, the show will be up through October 6, so please come back and see the exhibit daily from noon to 8:00 pm. There are also videos of the animals and a digital frame with a slideshow of many of the photos taken but not physically exhibited in the gallery. This exhibit is truly a great adventure, an African safari that you can vicariously experience through these artists’ work. Don’t miss it.

About E.J.

Artist, researcher, spiritual traveler of this fascinating orb we inhabit, lover of life and all it has to offer. Hi everyone out there in GMG land. My name is Ellen “E.J.” Lefavour (a/k/a “Ejay Khan” – the pseudonym I used during my years as a political activist artist). I am a newcomer to Cape Ann, and thrilled to be a new contributor to Good Morning Gloucester. I am a painter and photographer who has lived and worked as an artist for 20 years, since leaving the corporate world in 1990 to pursue my passion. My contributions to GMG will consist of images (either my paintings, photographs, or the occasional video) and a little history about the image, called “Did you Know?” I hope to come up with tidbits of information that people don’t already know, or had forgotten they knew. As I am new here, everything is new and fascinating to me, especially the amazing history, so bear with me if I post something that is common knowledge – I’ll eventually come up with something that’s new to you. Please take a minute to comment on my posts, like them or not, especially if you have corrections or something to add, as that is how I, and all of us, learn. Have a Good Morning Gloucester, and a blessed day.

  1. “I” MR. ANTI-SOCIAL.Stopped by the the openning and couldn’t believe the crowd. Ej has transformed this area of Rocky Neck into the most happening place on Cape Ann. Artists should be thankful for her and her inspiration. Can’t wait to she has up her sleeve next.

Congratulations EJ, on your first season. You have a great gallery and are collaborating with some remarkable people. I enjoyed meeting you this summer and hopefully will see you again next year. Wishing you continued success, Linda

  3. E.J. says:

Thanks Paul, you’re sweet (and after all the events you attended and had fun at this summer, you can no longer call yourself Mr. Anti-Social). While I did my part to help revitalize the Madfish Wharf section of Rocky Neck, there were so many people involved in doing the same: Joey, GMG crew and friends, the artists (new and longstanding), neighbors, the community and visitors who turned out for the openings, Mug Ups, Nights on the Neck, the Visitor’s Center volunteers who sent people our way, our Mayor (who did such a great job with the roads, sidewalks, parking lot and general “curb appeal” of Rocky Neck Ave.), those who came for dinner and/or dancing at Madfish Grille, the Rudder and the Studio and stopped into the galleries, the customers who help us pay the rent and keep on going, and all those who support and encourage Rocky Neck Art Colony. Next year will be even better.
Thanks Linda, and I couldn’t agree more – I have been really blessed to connect with such a group of truly remarkable people, and to be living in such a remarkable place. I enjoyed meeting you too and hope to see you back on Rocky Neck for Mug Up next summer.
