One Hour At A Time Saturday Morning Beach Clean Up With A Chance To Win A Pair Of Whale Watch Tickets

Melissa Cox writes-

Members of One Hour at a Time Gang and fellow citizens,
After reading this story (see link below) I was saddened to not see Pavilion Beach or any at Stage Fort on the list. Maybe it is because they didn’t have enough volunteers to cover all of the beaches in our area. Help me throw together a group that will make this city proud and clean. These two beaches are heavily traveled by our visitors and it is a shame to see them left out of a wonderful event. Please know this clean up is in addition to the other efforts on Saturday and not sanctioned by the Coastsweep group.

I’ll be at one of these two locations on Saturday morning, won’t you join me?
I’ll take care of picking up the trash bags but please bring gloves (garden or work gloves are better then disposable), water is a reusable container and a friend!! Spread the word. We can do this.
Saturday Sept 17th 8am – 11am
I will be stationed at Pavilion Beach while my husband, Bill Cox, will be at Stage Fort Park.
Please RSVP if you can attend or if you need more information~ melissacox4council@gmail.com
Together we can do more,
Melissa Cox

Capt Bills Whale Watch is going to be donating a pair of tickets to raffle off for those who come down to the clean up on Saturday Sept 17th 8-11. Pavilion Beach or Stage Fort Beach’s. You will need to check in with Melissa (Pavilion Beach) or Bill (Stage Fort) Cox to get a raffle ticket!
Thank you.

What If?

Also, the cutest photo of Caton Andrade (Dr. Nicole’s son) in his homemade GMG T swabbing the decks of the Schooner Adventure after Mug Up on Schooner Festival weekend.

And a really nice note from Dr. Nicole:

As promised EJ, sorry for the delay!  Thanks so much for having us at MugUp on Schooner Festival weekend!  It was great to see Paul F, and to meet Ed C, Paul M, Dorothy Englander (LOVE her work!) and finally the infamous Bean!  The Beauport Breakfast was sold out so we came back to the Neck where we visited Brenda at Imagine, then little Caton grabbed the helm and swabbed the deck on the Schooner Adventure and worked up an appetite for lunch at the Studio Restaurant .  We are excited for Trails and Sails Weekend and we have a real wee GMG shirt for representin’ now!  FYI there are also still slots open for the fall nooks and crannies tour at Beauport Sleeper McGann House, I highly recommend!

As you know, Cape Ann Healing Center is very committed to sharing Gloucester as a destination for healing in its art, land, history, resources and people.  We are so grateful for all that you and all the GMG contributors do, we voted daily from every computer in the office.  As promised also attached are fun photos and is the flyer for our YMCA for ALL fundraiser movie What If?  Awakening to Our True Selves at the Cape Ann Community Cinema, next wednesday Sept. 21st.  Doors open at 7, hope to see some GMG fans there, it is a great film, thanks for helping us spread the word!

So hope everyone can turn out for What If? at Cape Ann Community Cinema.  I know after a wild summer on Rocky Neck, I’m certainly ready to start thinking about my health and life in a totally new way.

Striper season in Gloucester: the fall run in recreational kayaks From Adam Bolonsky

Now that the fall run for striped bass is underway in Gloucester and the rest of Massachusetts, anglers might want to consider some safety issues.

Short and stubby plastic ecreational kayaks are the norm these days for kayak fishing. But they have severe limitations. Rec kayaks lack both bulkheads and internal flotation. It doesn’t take much for them to swamp and sink.

Here’s a somewhat ponderous video that makes the point:

GMG Tech Talk- Google Flights Kicks Every Other Flight Search Engine’s Ass

Holy Smokes This Flight Search Engine Is Lightening Fast.  I normally use Kayak and have done so for years to research the best flights.  Kayak IMO used to be the best but Google Flights Takes The Best of Kayak and speeds it up by like a bazillion times.  the results are near instantaneous.

Check it out for yourself and bookmark it (and if you don’t use bookmarks on your computer join the latest century won’t you and figure this stuff out)-

Spirit of Massachusetts and the Harvey Gamage by Kathy Chapman

While on route from the Canadian Maritimes to the Caribbean Sea, these two schooners sail into Gloucester every September for fresh paint and to refit.

They are part of the educational organization Ocean Classroom Foundation which provides programs of sea education and adventure for the youth of America.

Captain Caroline Smith is pictured near the end of the slide show. She is the youngest captain of the schooner fleet. Congrats to her on a great accomplishment!

Washington Street’s Savour Fire Photos From Bill O’Connor

Bill writes-

Hi Joey,

Last night when I went out side, I could smell fire.  The wind was blowing from the North so I knew something was up downtown.  I drove over to the Paint Factory and from my point of view it looked like there was a building burning in the fort.  I took some shots and headed over to town, and was surprised to learn that the fire was burning at the Savour Wine and Cheese shop on Washington Street.

There was a lot of activity, with a huge response from neighboring communities.  I saw engines and personnel from Rockport, Beverly and Manchester in addition to Gloucester.

The fire was still burning when I got there and the wind was blowing pretty hard, fanning the fire and making it difficult for the crews fighting it. Apparently the fire started at Savour, then jumped to the building next door because of the wind.  The Street would be clear of smoke, then a slight change in the direction of the wind would create a thick blanket of smoke – making it hard to see (and take photos).

Thankfully nobody was hurt, but Savour was totaled from what I could see.  Anyhow, I thought I would share the photos I took.

To think that out of all the blogs in all of Massachusetts to win the popular vote, I’m just very very very emotional right now. Love you guys

I’d also like to tip my hat to Adam Gaffin at Universal Hub who IMO has the Best BOSTON based blog and the other nominees.

This isn’t an award for Joey C, this isn’t an award for Joey C and our contributors. this is an award for every person that clicks on their bookmark for GMG, for every person that subscribes, for every person who writes in a comment and encourages us to keep on pushing, this is award for our entire community without which we would have never kept on trying to bring the best of our area and share with the world.
